The issue for Larry in the goat debate is longevity. He didn't do "it" for long enough but he did do 'it' better than anyone else. Lebron is definitely more gifted overall but Larry did much more with what he had. As has been said many times before, Larry's greatest asset was between his ears.

Im a Pistons fan and saw many games with Larry and Michael, Magic (he went to my school MSU) and vs my HS team. I hated Larry Bird but Omg was he good. I can't think of a starting 5 that is better without him on the team. The guy was just a winner and had like a 6th sense on where to be at the right time. He had "It" what ever that is he had it. Birds intelligence of the game and his mental game were elite. His shot accuracy and his deception tactics were also next level. He was constantly a step ahead making his opponents think he was going the other direction. Bird was a scientist on the court in my opinion. He could break it down entirely, master the understanding of the game and throw everything he learned right in your face. A lot of people couldn’t contend with that.

I'm 66, live in LA a huge Wilt and Jerry West fan. I saw Wilt's last game in person. LA against NY. Wilt retired because Jack Kent Cook wouldn't give Wilt a raise, he was making $250,000 and wanted $300, 000 because Peli was making $300,000. West retired at the start of the next season. He was still a very good player, better than most guards in the league but couldn't play up to his own standards. I heard him say in 1973 that someone dribbled past him that had no business being on the court with him....thats when he retired. Bird was the same way. He could still play but he had standards to live up to. Those standards were his own. If Wilt wanted to he could have played two or three more years, told the coach "I want to score more ". Then he would have put the scoring title out of reach of anyone. Remember, Wilt played at Kansas, then played for the Harlem Globe Trotters. Give Wilt 5 more years at a young man, the record might be 45,000 pts. I believe Wilt is the GOAT MJ is the second best. But if I were to start a team my first 2 would be #1. Wilt #2. Bird I hated Larry in the 80s Lakers were my team. But of all the players I miss, from Wilt to Magic to Kobe.... It's LARRY.

Plus at that last game against the Nicks I waited at the ramp out side the Forum to get West's and Wilt's autograph. You could do that back then. Wilt came out and talk to me all the way to his car, about 100 yards away. I was the only guy around, that's when he told me he needed more money from the owner. By the way, what do you think he was driving? A 1972 station wagon. It was his prize for being the MVP of the playoffs the previous year. It was nothing special but there were about a dozen volleyball in the back. If you don't know, he was a very good player... P.S. Goodrich was driving an orange Datson 240 Z, West was driving a red Ferrari, I think it was a Daytona. I'm 66 and can remember crazy stuff about the Lakers back then. One more thing, that last year the Lakers had no business being in the finals if it weren't for Wilt. Chicago had em beat. Sorry for rambling.

Bird is the most underrated player in NBA history. If he played in the modern NBA with all the rules against physical play, he would have been twice as effective. Bird was getting hammered on a regular basis during his career, it would still happen but much, much less and there would be a lot more fouls called.

People don't realize that Larry watched his father go to work with an ankle that was black and blue and swollen as hell. Kevin Durant is a hell of an offensive player BUT Bird would and could carry a team on his back. He had leadership skills that would be foreign today.

The most telling metric about how valuable a player is is how they make their team better. When Bird came to the Celtics their record was 29-53. In his first season they did nothing but add Bird and they went 62-20. 33 game turnaround. In college he took a totally backstreet college (Indiana State) and led a bunch of jokers to a 33-0 season on his back. They lost in the finals and haven’t been heard from since Bird left in 79’. That’s greatness and value!!!! No knock on Magic but he went to a team that had the career scoring leader in Kareem Jabbar.

Best player, probably ever. He started with ROY and finishing 4th, then 1st or 2nd for 8 straight years including 3 consecutive MVPs. Injuries hampered the number of games that he was able to play afterwards but he still performed at an elite level when he was able to play. By far the best all around shooter who ever played. And by far the best performer under pressure that basketball will ever see.

The reason why the Jamal Mashburn story happened was because the Dream Team had to practice against college kids! And the night before Rodney Rogers had told Larry Bird that he hadn't hit a jumper since 84! And Magic was there! And Larry Bird fired back: young fella, it's gonna be a long frigging weak (he used the other f word)! And next day Larry Bird hit 8-9 shots in row in Rodney Rogers grill and was telling him exactly what he was gonna do! And his final quip, was the one that Jamal Mashburn said! 84 huh? Larry Bird was one of my favorite players when I was a kid in the 80s, and a teenager in the early 90s! A huge shoutout to Larry legend!

You know what was really bizarre about the 80’s Celtics is that they didn’t even look particularly healthy let alone a championship team. Bird was all elbows and knees and not very athletic, Parrish looked like a monster from a Japanese horror movie and McHale looked like a science experiment gone horribly wrong. They say Bird wasn't athletic but he was quick and had really good agility for his height along with super hand eye coordination and basketball IQ which was what made him great. To be more accurate he wasn't a short distance track athlete like the guys that entered the dunk contest. He probably could have hustled to a respectable 400 meter time. Longer distance up to 1500 meters I think he'd have left those high fliers in the dust. Ran a 5:20 mile his first day as Pacers coach when he was 40. That's fast.

His jump shot was soaking wet, along with his rebounding, astounding passing ability and genius level basketball IQ, there would be no way to defend him. I consider Bird the most fundamentally sound player ever to pick up the rock, and if I ever wanted to pick one guy to teach my kid how to play the sport correctly, it would be Bird.

I was a Laker fan and just thought the Larry Bird was all hype and a lucky player. I didn’t rate him because he was slow and couldn’t jump plus he was white. Obviously I didn’t know what I was talking about and didn’t really understand the game. Larry Bird was a bad man and even though I’m still a Laker fan. Bird is my favourite player because I understand the game better now.

Bird made up for his lack of speed and size with having the ability of understanding the game. He was like a chess player and always thinking about what to do three or four moves in the future. Absolutely love listening to these stories about Larry Bird. I like how a lot of NBA players told there stories about how he would TELL THEM WHAT HE WAS GOING TO DO! Then , YES! he would do it. Remember watching him and the Celtics playing the Detroit Pistons games. He took no crap from Bill Lambeer. Was watching that night when Bird got into fight with Bill. Then loved it! When Bird throwed the ball towards Bill Lambeer s head. He took no junk, hut he dished out a lot of junk! Have always loved my Boston Celtics.

That’s a problem with this goat argument in the NBA. There have just been to many NBA players with unique unbelievable talents and athleticism. I mean how can you compare Jordan to Wilt to Lebron to Dr. J to Bird to Kobe to Jabbar to Russel to Magic and the list goes on. All had impossible to believe but completely unique talents. I mean it’s not like MLB, excluding the PED cheater’s, where Babe Ruth is clearly the GOAT or Golf where Jack Nicklaus is clearly the GOAT or Ali the GOAT of GOATS.

Hey thanks for your channel. Love 80s-90's ball. And I loved watching Dr. J and David Skywalker in the 70s even. And Kareem was the glue that held all those decades together (well at least through 89). I remember the White Shadow tv show. One-On-One movie. Fast Break; but when Larry and Magic arrived on the scene in college... man that was huge (and college basketball was already more popular than the NBA back then --- at least that's what I recall with Billy Packer (Rest in peace) and Dick Enberg). Great memories of great games on the tube.

Love all the Larry Bird stories, and loved the parts in Winning Time relating to him. Sad parts about his dad too. Tragic. My favorite thing about him over his mental toughness, skills, competitiveness,humor, and his shit talking was his genuineness and humility. He came from humble beginnings, and when Magic was at his lowest point in life… Larry was the first to check on him that he was ok. Like Magic said, “That’s when you find out who your real friends are.” Bird is as real as it gets.
