He had European basketball roots which was always more technical, team oriented and less physical than NBA. At least at that time. A bit like the different styles in hockey between NHL and the Soviet Union in the past. European basketball became much more physical in the last 20 years and that's a good thing. So the gap closed for a great bit.

There was a TV ad in Germany at the time he was playing for the Supersonics. It was about his defense. He was guarding and not letting the offense player through. He said: "Am I in the way? He was never that found of playing for his mother country like Dirk was. Admittedly, basketball in Schremps time in Germany was still worse than during Nowitzki's time. So, for Nowitzki it was probably more worth the extra pain because he had a better team. I always admired Nowitzki's loyalty to his roots and home country. It was unquestionable for him (for a long time at least) to play for the national team.

Sonics fan here that went to a ton of Sonics games in the 90's. When the Sonics traded for Schrempf, most in Seattle thought that it would be the final piece to putting them over the top. He was a very good player and could do a lot of things, but I remember him as a player that frequently missed big shots who would also struggle in critical games. The 1996 NBA Finals was Schrempf in a nutshell. He went 3-8 with 13 points in a Game 1 loss. In Game 2 he went 5-14 with only 2 rebounds in a critical game that the Sonics only lost by four points. I also remember him missing 1 or 2 wide open threes when the Sonics were right on the cusp of seizing the momentum that game. He played okay in Games 3 and 4 in blowouts, and then went 5-12 in Game 5 before finally having a good game in Game 6. On paper he had an okay series with 16 points on 44% shooting, but he was their third option on offense and they just needed him to step up and give them more to have a chance to beat the Bulls. As he said himself in the video, he was at his most productive when he was aggressive, and he just didn't do that as often as he should.
@elnach3240
@elnach3240 Жыл бұрын
That was the problem with the Sonics. They didn’t have a dependable clutch player on offense who could isolate and take his man one on one when they needed a critical score. Kemp was great in transition but he wasn’t someone who demanded the ball and dominated on the block.

@@elnach3240 Kemp did eventually grow into a guy that dominated on the block. He learned some hard early lessons from Karl Malone when he was a youngster, but played Malone straight up by the time that they matched up in the 1996 playoffs. He also gave it to Olajuwon in the 1996 playoffs, and dominated Rodman in the Finals. It's true that they didn't have a Jordan or Bird to take that final shot with the game on the line, but who really did? Even guys like Barkley for as good as he was wasn't Jordan or Bird when it was all on the line.

A young Detlef Schrempf already had nice english skills with almost no accent. Remarkable that Germany won the 1993 European Championship without Schrempf but with another former NBA player, Chris Welp (RIP). Schrempf gave up his german passport and became a full U.S. citizen. Unfortunately he never got the deserved recognition in germany, same with Dirk. That's because Basketball in germany gets almost no media attention. Detlef Schrempf was a great example of discipline and hard work. In that era, averaging 13 and 6 as a role player, it's definitely right to say he was underrated. Thx for the video.

Having lived in the PNW when the Super Sonics were a true contender it became obvious that Seattle is a place that doesn’t treat its teams with the respect they deserved. I was a Seattle fan and liked shrimpf. I watched him doing routines before games and he’d practice fundamentals like dribbling the length of the court while running. I also spotted him at a university weight room in summer 1994. He was serious and maybe had few injuries? But the player that was traded for him also probably deserves a similar review, if it’s not already been done. And I think if the Sonics kept Mckey they might have had a better chance of winning a championship because he seemed to fit better w the trapping defense and was a quick player w out the ego.

If you took out the years, he played under 31 minutes he averages another 2.5 points a game, and in the Playoffs he averaged (again if you count when he played over 30-31 mpg) averaged 18. A really solid player. In today's game he'd probably be used more often/effectively, and if you teleported 199os him to today a LOT of teams would love to have him (Dallas I'm looking at you)

Here is someone I haven't seen videos on since he played, The Suns, Dan Majerle (pronounced Marley). Because sports was regional back then, only time I saw him play was on MTV, when they did their thing in the early to mid 90s.

Thank you so much for not always looking at the best american players, but also outside the box! There are many Europeans that helped the NBA to become what it is the best league in the world! But there are many great talents and players around the world

Detlef did it on the court. But what he's all about off the court really makes him special. This man fight hard and puts his money towards equality. Respect

Your videos are awesome. I don't like todays nba with everyone shooting threes the game for me is not fun to watch. But the nba from the 80's to the 90's i can watch all day. Thank you for your videos.

Detlef was a solid player. Grant Hill was spot on. He was a solid player at all the skill sets. Dude had a nice touch on that jump shot too. Wasn't a super star but wasn't an average player he was starter material.
