The Kemp draft was great. I know the 89 class was very deep but to get this talent for your 17th pick is impressive still. The 90 class was weak and Seattle picked Payton with the 2nd pick. It was either him or Dennis Scott at the time and Seattle made good decision. This is very good drafting. Imagine having Dennis Scott and BJ Armstrong as your one two punch vs. Payton and Kemp. Spent many years growing up and living in Seattle, and loved the Sonics. The days of Kemp, Payton, Perkins, Ellis, MacMillan, Schrempf, Hawkins, were great times. Kemp could be a total beast, but he also had that Westbrook trait of dribbling the ball off of his foot. I remember many a Sonics fan just yelling at the TV "Dude just bulldoze and dunk the damn ball, don't be trying to dribble it in the paint." He was a total menace when he was on his game. Too bad he lost control of many things in his life both personally and professionally, he had the gifts to be an all time great and HoF'r. Only thing that came between these guys and a ring... Jordan's Bulls, the 72 - 10 Bulls. That year Payton won DPoY, while Kemp and Payton were All-Stars. Was one of the great defensive teams.. Schrempf, Perkins, and Hawkins were all kicking butt all season. I graduated from high school in Seattle in 1991 and The Sonics Were Approachable and you would always see the players out and about! The long gone Tower Records Music Store in Downtown Seattle that sat underneath the shadows of the Space Needle was a hot spot to commonly run into the players at! Gary & Shawn were always at Tower Records and they treated us fans/kids like they knew us! To a certain extent we did kind of know the players on the Sonics back in those times! The Sonics were so accessible back in the day & fans were allowed to literally wait around in the player parking lot at the Seattle Center Coliseum and approach the players for autographs, wrist bands & head bands, even tickets for future games! Jim Marsh rest in peace was a public relations guy for the Sonics and he was one with the fans with the people that seeing him before during and after games became a personal friendship as he would always remember the times you would see him & talk to him! If you didn't have any money to buy a ticket he would go into the walk up ticket window box that sold tickets and walk out and hand you 4 tickets! Not just one time Mr. Marsh was constantly giving to the people of the community during his time working for the team! I still see Shawn to this very day & he is such a sweet quiet humble man very soft spoken with a ❤️ of gold too!

Great vid man! Nothin' against current NBA players and NO disrespect at all with this statement: NBA players in the 80's to mid 90's as a whole are probably some of the greatest athletes ever. As far as a comparison of players from different eras, we have to computate their contemporaries on opposing teams stats as well. The Reign Man, Shawn Kemp, was a great NBA player. Any starting 5 players in the 80's to mid 90's would be All-Star material in the current league. Just a great era for Basketball. Shawn Kemp dunked with a ferocity unmatched, true. He was a good defender, shooter, passer, and shot blocker too.

Grew up watching Kemp, he was the funnest to watch, every game something good. In my mind he's so underrated because of the way his career ended. He was so good in transition, his defense was really good, mid range and in the post he was good.. if he played in this era it would be INSANE.

In my opinion watching the NBA from the mid 80s through the 90s, that was the best competitive basketball period. Kemp and Payton sh ould go in as hall of famers. They were a huge part of the greatness of the NBA. Sometimes it's not about numbers but impact.

The "Reign Man" was legit. Definitely was one of the very best in the League for most of his career. It''s been documented that off-court , personal issues changed his focus and desire to play in his last 2-3 years. Would have loved seeing a longer career for Kemp. He truly had HOF-level talents. But, I enjoyed what I saw.

Was a big Shawn Kemp fan growing up. I think I may have been one of the first people in my state to even rock the green and white Sonics Kemp jersey back in 1991. (There was no internet back then so you couldn't find it online. Went to Niketown in Chicago and came across one) He was exciting to watch his first few years. You always had that feeling of "what will he do next." He was so athletic and agile as a power forward at 6'10". Each year he kept getting better and better. He went from an athletic power dunker, to being great passer as a power forward, picked up his rebounding, and became a better shooter. He became well rounded and a great team player. The year the Sonics faced the Bulls in the finals was probably his pinnacle as a player. It seemed like the sky was the limit. With Jordan retiring, it seemed inevitable the Sonics were the next great team. It just didn't pan out and the Spurs came with the Twin Towers with Robinson and Duncan. I only put 2 basketball players' posters on my wall as a kid. Michael Jordan and Shawn Kemp. Those were the days....

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. Seattle Sonics fans were so lucky and blessed to enjoy Kemp while the the bulk of the NBA only got glimpses from ESPN highlights. Eddie Johnson has to have a personal issue with Shawn, because ain't no way in hell that Blake is better than Shawn. Sure, the end to his career was truly disappointing; however, he was amazing in Seattle as well as his first year with the Cavs. He also didn't have insane individual numbers because he played on an unselfish team where multiple players were averaging double digit points unlike the players he is compared with then and now.
