Larry Bird averaged 24.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game in his 897-game career with the Boston Celtics . 24.3/10.0/6.3 No one else has a line like that.

Been watching and playing BBall since I was a very young kid. The one thing that caught my attention about LB was his shot. The man's shots were astonishing to me not only from the bizarre angles he hit from, which were amazing but, the thing that I noticed was the sheer quantity of Nothing but Nylon so many of those bizarre angle off-balance shots. His accuracy blew my mind. Trivia: in LB's first year the brothers disrespect for him being drafted so high was evident in what they called the man. They called LB, the Hick from French Lick. That disrespect quickly faded away after they had to play against the man.

I'm an old school NBA fan from Australia... It didn't matter where in the world you were from though... In the 80s you were either a Magic fan or a Bird fan... I remember hitting the playground and talking trash like Larry... Slipping Larry's passes out or trying to hit those smooth as silk shots from outside like Larry... I turned the playground into a boxing ring with fights cuz nobody likes getting made into a fool... Watching Larry and learning to play like him was totally against the grain because even the white boys here all wanted to be Magic... The fights caused by everyone trash-talking were great.. but beating them on the boards with Larry's moves was epic. The man is still MY favourite GOAT.

The disrespect Jordan and others get is always mind blowing enough. I was born in 96, so it's not like I grew up watching them, but it was instilled in my brothers and I what and who the legends were. Most shocking of all to me is the lack of respect Bird gets. I'll never understand it. And good lord, I am so sick of GOAT arguments. But Larry deserves so much more respect than I see him get.

If you watch Larry Legend make a pass, watch carefully. He threads the needle through impossibly small openings to stationary targets, targets moving teammates to where they are going to be, and is unafraid to do full court passes leading a running player over his head and into his arms. Even closer observation shows he put spin on the ball to go around the opponent and connect with his teammates. His full court pass was high and fast but dropped like a baseball sinker into the teammates arms. He made these spectacular passes instantaneously seemingly without thought. Like a computer calling up a play and he did this day after day. If you tried to stop him he automatically had a solution and bam there it was. Larry was immensely fun to watch. Thanks for the memories!!

Mistake. You're omitting the greatest defensive player of all-time who won 11 rings in 13 seasons -- BILL RUSSELL, the only other player of all-time to be the equal of LARRY BIRD in the brain department. Two greatest players I ever saw play in person. Bill was way underrated offensively. I remember game 7 vs. LA in LA. Lakers had Wilt, Baylor and West. Celts won in OT and Bill scored 30 pts and grabbed 40 rebouds. Nobody had his mental strength. He just wouldn't allow himself to lose.

@@gdm49 I was really thinking of putting Russell, but I'm a Spurs fan, I got to have some.room for a Spur. Thanks for that story, I looked at a video saying Russell would probably Ave 15 pts, 15 reb, 4 bls, those numbers to me are good enough, but Duncan can do the same with some.extra points

Also, it’s always seemed stupid to me saying any specific color can’t play a sport. I’m 61 years old and I’ve seen all colors do it: Jerry West, Pistol Pete, Kevin McHale, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Etc...One thing I’ve always loved is sports teaches you color doesn’t matter. I was a Bird hater back in the day, but that's mostly because I was a Detroit Bad Boys fan, and my favourite players were Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman. Even the great defensive player Rodman couldn't slow down Bird. Plus, how Robert Parrish got away with sucker punching Laimbeer the way he did, without even a foul being called, that was wrong. But after the bad Boys broke up, and the Pistons front office dissed Laimbeer, by not bringing him into management, I became and ANTI-Piston fan. After that, I really started to appreciate Bird. But lets not forget about Magic. He may not have had the outside shot of Bird, but he definitely had everything else and then some.

I like watching Bird do the deflection passes. It's like he uses the momentum of the ball to carry it forward, while only applying enough force to change the trajectory of the ball

I’m taking Bird to start a team …….. no disrespect to Magic ! Both have the highest winning percentage as players in the history of the NBA , still to this day ! And both saved the NBA ! …….. it’s just Bird was better !

@@stevenroetzel4470 You have 2 centers and only one forward. Might want to rethink that lineup.

@@Anomaly188 you can move one to the forward position… Magic played five different positions ! You don’t think Wilt or Kareem could easily play forward ? ….. Great top 5 , if you ask me !

@@Anomaly188 you wouldn't have to play Kareem as a center, the Sky Hook might not be the most exciting shot, but he could hit it from almost anywhere. I am still thinking they would dominate against anyone.

Larry might've been slow, but he had the fastest hands ever, a hand-eye coordination that is imo unmatched to this day.

@@Travar1410 Ummmm if you only referring to shooting then I agree with you but in every other aspect of the game where hand eye coordination and speed were involved MJ is better than both of them ... no contest. I am pleased we are not even bothering to mention the cleveland dude....

@@DiosanXaquerry Bird's passing? Better than MJ. Bird's rebounding? Better than MJ. Bird's shooting? Better than MJ. MJ might be a better defender, but Bird beats him in every offensive category.

Bird wasn't "slow". That's such a stereotype! Show me another 6'9 guy who's any faster!

Love Cedric Maxwell and Patrick Ewing - I grew up watching all of them in the early 80's at 16 and the time after was the best basketball I've ever seen by so many players, and especially Magic and Bird turning the league around in my opinion. It was so much fun to watch!
