No one is denying the quality of the NBA and how prestigious the NBA is. The idea that being an NBA champion meaning you are a world champion is outrageous. It’s is an American league. Yes, it’s the best league, but it is not a worldwide competition. In soccer/football, the Champions league is the best European club based competition. No, it isn't applicable because they are different sports with different histories and standards. Soccer is built with the idea of club teams and then one major world championship that is the end-all-be-all. Mbappe, Renaldo, Kane, etc. would never even think of skipping the World Cup - it's the considered the highest level of competition and honor. There is no equivalent in basketball in nation-to-nation competition. Both the Olympics and FIBA World Cup regularly have the best players in the world absent and neither count against/for legacies. The competition in basketball to determine who is the best in the world is the NBA Finals. No one cares about how big or impactful soccer is; basketball is its own sport and is different.

The NBA champions by the literal definitions of the words “world” and “champion” are the world champions. The NBA WAS a domestic league when the “NBA” name was coined in the 40s, it is not anymore. The draft and free agency are global and every team has a robust international scouting department. The only reason teams are based in the US is for logistics and travel reasons. You cannot fly to China for a game and then be in Chicago the day after in an 82 game season. Any nba player faces MORE diverse and talented international competition in one week of an NBA season than Noah Lyles does his entire career. KD might reasonably have to play Giannis, luka and jokic (from Greece, Slovenia and Serbia respectively) the same calendar week. That is higher and more diverse competition than anyone Noah competed against. FIBA is literally happening right now, nobody is calling the winner “world champions”. The NBA is so laughably better than any other league, you could take the 15 best players from the rest of the planet and they’ed still miss the playoffs in the NBA. The issue is “football” (soccer) fans think they invented the phrase “world champions” and only THEIR context for it is valid. They didn’t, and it isn’t. NBA(BAA) started using the term "World Champions" in 1948, first foreigner draft took place in 1970. They didn't even take African American players until 1950 with Earl Lloyd, Chuck Cooper, Harold Hunter. Heck they even had "unofficial" 4 black players quota restriction. So technicality-wise, they didn't even take the best players from around the world, nor in the US, when they embedded Minneapolis Lakers 1948 NBA Championship ring with "World Champions".

You can't be a champion without playing the games. There's a 99% chance the NBA team would win if they did, but you can't just call yourself the winner. There's also that 1% chance that injuries happen that mess up the NBA team and cause chemistry issues and choke against a hot shooting team from the rest of the world. When KD joined the 73 win Warriors, everyone knew they were the best team in the league, they still had to play the games to be called NBA champs.

If we look at the entirety of Olympic basketball history, Team USA won gold 80% of the time, and didn’t win gold 20% of the time. 1972: Team USA won silver 1980: Team USA didn’t make it in the top three 1988: Team USA won bronze 2004: Team USA won bronze Technically, I believe Noah Lyles was right. NBA champions are not the “world champions” per se, but at the same time, being an NBA champion is still generally way more impressive than being a world champion in Olympic basketball.
