Fun fact: Acclaim were the publishers of Midway who developed the original NBA JAM. Acclaim wanted ownership of the game so they approached Midway and suggested naming the game "NBA JAM" meanwhile going behind Midway's backs and copyrighting the name so they could claim ownership.

I dont think the story went like that. Midway had made another basketball game previously called Arch Rivals and they were planning a new basketball game and midway through development they thought about acquiring a NBA license. Originally the NBA rejected the idea but they would approve it later after another pitch. The game was to be called NBA Jam Session which is a trademark owned by the NBA. they would soon shorten it to NBA Jam. then after the enormous success of the arcade release, Acclaim secured the rights for the home console releases. Midway at the time didn't have a console department. Acclaim isn't really known for putting out quality titles but the NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat ports were okay. The home console versions were a huge success, it generated more money than the Arcade vers. So Acclaim would have some secret meetings with the NBA to secure exclusive rights to the NBA Jam name for the next 7-8 years and Acclaim kinda ran the series to the ground. Midway could still use the NBA license though but they can't use the Jam name which is why they made NBA Hangtime and NBA Showtime. EA would have the license later in 2010

And in the end, the follow-ups to the NBA jam games from the original developers were NBA hangtime and NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC

Take some of those built for home arcade units… $700. Upgrade monitor +800, upgrade cabinet +1000, upgrade controls +500, upgrade cpu/gpu/power +1000, upgrade marquee +1000, add margin +2000, add +2000 for commercial software/license (like where consumers pay $69), add $500 for distributor fees (no idea what this would be). $9500 + shipping. Seems like an under 10k arcade game could be possible. Which it sounds like there are some arcade games under $10k right? Where is the another 5k going? Designers? Licensing? Programmers? Other Expenses? More margin to stay profitable due to lower volume (ie console multi-platform can sell 5-10 million+ copies). How many units would a really good commercial/arcade/fec exclusive game at 15k sell in 2024? 100k? 500k? 1M? more?

Distributors usually do a $12~18% mark-up on video games, but I have never been able to find out the exact margin on profit for a cabinet. There's also the cost of the factory build, which requires the developers to pay for a certain number of units up-front (so if you want to do a factory run of 500 machines, you have to cover 100% of that cost plus labor. That will possibly eat up the machine's profit, depending on any manufacturing delays, issues, etc). From 2006-2019, the average cost of a new arcade game was $7k for a standard model, $12k for a DX. Now in the post-inflation world, it's doubled or in some cases tripled. But as you also get at with lower volume, that's where the developer has to build in a certain, safe & healthy profit margin to not only cover the expenses of development, but also to make enough to keep the company in a spot where they can still fund the next game. This is why it's impossible to charge console prices, as under no circumstances will an arcade machine sell 1 million units; not even 500k is realistic (Space Invaders and Pac-Man only sold around 320k back in the heyday of arcades). A far more realistic expectation for a modern arcade game is to aim for around 3000 unit sales, then if you're fortunate, you'll hit higher numbers. Given that software & cabinet development is somewhere around $6~8m these days, that's where we can make some educated math guesses as to how much these need to make just to break even.

They already have this at Dave n Busters here in Vegas! I played a few games Wednesday. Super fun, although the movement is sluggish and not fluid like we remember NBA Jam being. Still a great time tho

I played and would agree it’s slightly slow and unresponsive at times. Also 2v2 would have been better. With that said it still fun but it made me miss the original NBA Jam & Hangtime games.

As mentioned in the video, I hope there is also a 2v2 mode (especially for nostalgia and, according to the presented screenshots, the actual cabinet can support it). Definitely looking forward to learning more about NBA Superstars though, w/ all-of-the 🗣🎙"#RAZZLE_DAZZLE❕"

What price would be an overcharge? Is it possible to rent these machines for your business?
@arcadeheroes_coinop
@arcadeheroes_coinop 2 ай бұрын
Rentals are possible but fairly rare - if you can find an operator who owns it, they'd usually setup a percentage revenue split in a business situation(called revenue sharing). It can be tough to find them, since they are usually small and local as opposed to nationwide.

Do arcades versions make as much as it would if they’d brought it to console instead?

Was thinking the same thing, in this day and age of so few arcades anymore, what places are going to make back that $15k???? If they decide to keep this arcade exclusive, you have to bet the emulation community will be working on a version for people at home to play.

Man, I'm a regular "Rain Man" when it comes to how much video games cost, but god damn, I did not know a new arcade game cost $15,000 (if I heard that correctly). Even $7,000 sounds like a lot, I guess that insures that only chain restaurants like Dave & Busters ends up with the new arcade games. That, and why my broke ass never got into the business or become a serious collector, LOL.

I highly doubt this is going to see a home release as well, since a developer like Raw Thrills is pretty small, and plus, if they attempt to renew the NBA license for a console port of NBA Superstars, it'll likely bankrupt the company since they won't have much money. A similar situation could've happened with Cruis'n Blast back in 2021, where if Raw Thrills attempted to renew the Lamborghini license for a home port and kept everything intact, the company would have went bankrupt right there

At 15k, it means a lot of arcades can’t afford it. With no console port and too expensive for a lot of arcades = not a lot of people ever play this game = what is the point? I don’t have the answer, but that is a no win for me.

More arcades are likely to buy something that is exclusive, but that aside, this game is mainly for the "FEC market" aka Family Entertainment Center. Big arcades with big budgets that don't blink an eye at a $15k purchase (Dave & Busters, Round1USA, Pin Stack, Bowlero, etc). Last I heard, there were around 4,000 of those in operation in the US alone, which is less than what classifies as an arcade (regular arcades, bar/arcades, route arcades) but still not a small number - more than enough to cover every state dozens of times over(no, places like Alaska and Rhode Island don't have tons, but you get the point). If every FEC grabbed one, millions of people would still have access to play it and if it was that popular, some arcades would manage it. There is financing available, for example. I've spent more than $15k on single games before, but only if it looks like the risk is worth it. With a console port of this highly likely, that risk looks less worth it to me than it did before Raw Thrills decided to throw in the exclusive towel. On the flipside, if you don't have an arcade scene to develop for, then this kind of game never gets made in the first place for consoles. Instead, you get what 2K or EA or Ubisoft regularly dumps out for consoles, which aren't arcade style & action, but (buggy) farming & management simulators.

@@arcadeheroes_coinopare there any new or used machines you have your eye on to buy in the next year or so? You could sell 1 or 2 pins that are slow earners to cover most of the 15k? Which I mostly only play pins at arcades, but might be a good business decision and you have quite a lot of pins.
