Robert Hernandez, 38, of Healdsburg will be booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of arson to forest land in connection with the blazes in the Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor areas, Cal Fire said. Hernandez, a fire apparatus engineer, is accused of starting the following fires while he was off duty: the Alexander Fire on Aug. 15, the Windsor River Road Fire on Sept. 8, the Geysers Fire on Sept. 12, and the Geyser and Kinley fires on Sept. 14, according to Cal Fire.

But what if I told you that all the Western forests from the Pacific all the way to the Rockies NEED fire to survive and be healthy. Our forests depend on fire for clearing out brush and overgrowth and a lot of rare, native plants need fire just to germinate and come to life. The reason our wild fires have gotten so out of control is because our land/forest management REFUSE to uphold the Native American traditions of prescribed burns. If we want healthy forests basically immune from out of control wild fires, we need to start doing prescribed burns...

@@vintagesteel it's common knowledge that burning brush is the fastest and most effective way to clean out fuel sources. Unfortunately the environmentalists and health experts are concerned about carbon release and PM 2.5 which is a known carcinogen. The farmers have used controlled burns for generations to clear canals and other difficult to mow places. Unfortunately the environmentalists won't allow it anymore, instead they prefer all the fuel be collected and either converted into liquid carbon to be pumped underground or burned for biomass to generate electricity and make compost.

​@@charlesbolin7207I think in more rural areas it's common knowledge but where I'm from in CA most people are totally ignorant to it and think all fire is bad. It would be feasible to start collecting the brush if we had kept the forests cleared in the first place but it would be an impossible task now since the fuel load has built up to an unprecedented amount in the last century. What we need are prescribed burns to get things back to normal and then we can start focusing on repurposing brush/fuel into more green uses. Also we should be logging new growth trees around the old growth groves to help the old growth since the new growth zaps water and nutrients from the soil that the old growth needs to flourish. If we did this, we wouldn't have to plant vast monocultures of pine trees for logging (which is terrible in and of itself due to susceptibility to disease, being planted to close together and not providing food and habitat for native wildlife)

Back in, I believe 1984, there was a firefighter from Glendale,CA. He was a serial arsonist responsible for many fires including 2 deaths. He was disgruntled with the fire department. They made a movie about it with Ray liotta playing the role. " Point of origin" check it out. Real interesting story. It really is not that uncommon.

They get a lot of overtime when working wildfires. Also a lot of wildfire crews are private companies contracted with the government. These wildland fire crews get paid a lot of money to fight the fires. My company only supplies a water truck and a few semi trucks to move heavy equipment. It wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that someone was starting fires so the government would activate resources and they might get activated. Its sad when stuff like this happens because honest people are risking thier lives and sleeping in tents between shifts roughing it un the woods to protect the homes of strangers and then it turns out the fire is set by one of thier own.

This happened to us in eastern Arizona. A wild land firefighter, who was Indian and lived on the reservation. Wanted more work and ended up being the states largest fire. Obviously he’s been in jail for awhile and will stay there for a long time.

Western forests NEED fire to be healthy. Why do you think our wildfires have been so out of control in recent years? Our land management REFUSES to uphold the Native American tradition of prescribed burns which removes all the brush and overgrowth (fuel) that makes these fires burn so intensely in the first place. Prescribed burns also remove the small, new growth which outcompetes old growth trees by zapping water and soil nutrients from the ground that the old growth needs. Also, lots of rare, native plant species DEPEND on fire to germinate and come to life. I don't think individuals should "lone wolf" the issue but our government needs to stop being so dumb about it and start doing prescribed burns if they want to save our forests....

Cal Fire and the USFS covered up the Angora fire at Lake Tahoe in 2007. Where are those firefighters, and why did they NOT come forward to disclose to those 254 homeowners HOW that fire was started? Sure it was an accident, having a small fire going while waiting for the go ahead to ignite a controlled burn. Then having a large gust of wind take that small fire and destroy 254 homes. I interviewed one of the brothers out there that day who told me this happened. They had no reason to lie but the USFS and El Dorado County officials did. They need to be punished even if it was 17 yrs ago.
