When I worked in tv news our corporate policy was that we didn’t show images not produced by either us or our affiliates if we can’t identify the source of the image. Even if we showed a mugshot we always had to indicate where it came from. If I showed a photo of a missing child I had to say it was given to me by the family or the police. Taking images off of social media and naming “Facebook” as a source is legally a slippery slope especially if it’s not clear that the person who put it on there is the person who took the image. Most people I know know that most of the time the person who captures an image owns it legally unless they are being commissioned. Many stations adopt this policy as a legal shield intended to help avoid potential lawsuits. It’s clear you’re not competent in media law.
