Nine Louisiana families filed a federal lawsuit against their state's education department and their local school boards challenging the constitutionality of a radical new law requiring that the Ten Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms.

At one time the great Catholic monasteries of Europe were able to support the poor from the fat of the land bequeathed them by wealthy patrons. Henry VIII (the State) destroyed that in England.

It's a witch hunt. I am a teacher in Louisiana and this started years ago. My friend taught where the faculty shirts had the name of the school on the front and "in god we trust " on the back. It was default to have the shirt day in god we trust, but teachers had the option to check on the t-shirt order paper if they didn't want it. Several teachers said it made them feel uncomfortable, but were scared to opt out of the saying. The one teacher in the school who did opt out of the saying was talked about behind his back and ostracized. It became the talk of the school of who had the saying and who didn't. Luckily, the school I was at, was not doing that. Last year though, it became mandatory for "in god we trust" to be displayed in every classroom. I felt very uncomfortable with doing this. I intentionally placed an image of Icarus flying too close to the sun next to the In God We Trust sign in my classroom. The outright 10 commandments in our classroom is a witch hunt to see who will and will not display it. It also is a waste of tax dollars. Landry already knows he will be sued and wants to waste money over it as a political stunt. He wants to create divisiveness so that he can use it to get reelected. It's disgusting.

Who gets punished if the Commandments are not up according to the new law? Does the teacher take the hit? The Aide? A specialist, like the reading teacher or speech therapist? Does the principal get fined or go to jail? Does the school pay a fine out of the operating budget? If there is a water leak, electrical fire, or some kid just pulls the poster down or damages it, how long does the classroom / school have to replace it? Does someone get a warning? The posters are supposed to be donated to the schools. What if no one in the county donates? Or if not enough people donate? Which classrooms get the Commandments? Does it count for the whole school to put a poster in the gym? Or paint the Commandments on the floor in the hallway? Or post them next to the Office? Who goes around checking the posters? What if the school / community can't afford to have someone to do that? Or can't add that to someone's job? What if there is no one who checks? Who is this reported to anyway? We report when other countries elect religious leaders and enact religious laws. How is this different? Is it because the people who made the law feel that since it's their religion, its a good idea? What am I missing here? What other questions should I be asking?

I also suspect that now that someone sued they can use it as ammo for the christian persecution complex. Like so many public services in Louisiana, education ranks near last in the nation. Sounds like state officials have misguided priorities. But like so many Republican initiatives like these, after decades of scholars pointing out how unconstitutional their ideas are, their approach now is to ram there ideological preferences into law and hope the courts somehow uphold the precedent, which would give the green light for other states to try the same law.

If the Ten Commandments offend you it may be that they are a mirror looking back at you. You are reminded that we are all guilty of breaking a lot of them. We are all sinners. What did God do to save sinners? All of us know the answer but some may not value it. Jesus died on the cross to save us. That’s why his last words were “debt paid in full” translated from the original Greek. He paid the fine. If you were in a court of las with a mess of speeding tickets and someone paid the fine, you can go free. That’s what Jesus did for us.

I cannot wait until they put the Ten Commandments and require teachers to supposedly teach from the bible. Picture this a well-versed student, let's say a Jehovah's Witness child stands up in the classroom and clarifies every supposition from the teacher. then goes on to explain each commandment and how many community members are falling short. Watch how quick they will remove this.

JW wrote their own version of the Bible that strays far from the most accurate translation so they are hardly well versed. They also cherry pick verses out of context from 8 crusty old guys in NY that think that their god talks through them. That's beside the point. I don't want my child subjected to such a debate. Keep that at home and at church.

I imagine that parent then, would teach them to their kids. However, that parent has no right to decide for other parents by putting them in public schools. It is already totally legal for you to indoctrinate your own children with any sick fairy tales you like but it is not your right to force that on other parents and children that have no interest in it.
