Yeah. I knew he could win if the race fell apart and it didn’t just fall apart, it utterly collapsed. That pace was beyond suicidal. If Fierceness got even a 46 or even a little under a 46 pace which is still insane, he wins. Below 45 is literally impossible. The only thing this showed is that Fierceness is a monster. If he got a moderately fast pace, he blows this field away.

He didn't win but the gamest horse in this race was Forever Young. He shipped to KY....just missed in the Derby . Went back to Japan and won a Nice stakes. Then ships back to the U S. and ran a very good race. He was on the rail, then in the middle of the track coming to the wire. He shows a ton of heart Everytime he runs. A truly gifted horse.

No it wasn't. Gamest horse was Fierceness. Ran a 44.99 1/2 mile and was still there at the finish. Fastest paced BCC in the HISTORY of the race...and he ran right to the end. Everything set up perfectly for FY. Fierceness had the better effort.

What a Redemption for Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone finally put it together, but he needed the trip with a fast pace. Despite his lack of consistency, he deserves the Eclipse for 3-year-old. Fierceness, with 3 wins and 3 loses, showed again that he cannot win unless he gets the right trip, in which he is left alone on the front end or unchallenged. He was not able to close the deal at the 11/4 mile distance; once Leone went by, he made up no ground. He most likely is not a true classic distance runner; his dam was a sprinter. Had he run in the mile he had a better shot at winning.

Poor Next. He really does need that additional 1/4 mi. I think it was Zoe Cadmon that said, on TDN Writer's Room, "In Prat I trust." Her trust was/is well placed. Going by the emotion Flavien showed after the wire... even hugging the pony rider!, he REALLY wanted this one. (Doesn't hurt his feelings to 'collar' Irad on the way to an Eclipse award, either, I'll wager.)

In fact, I called it a "tragedy" that his handlers chose the BC Classic to run him in, because the race was not long enough for him AND because the level of competition was much higher than what he had been running against. Unfortunately, I was correct. I feel VERY bad for Next and angry at his trainer for his failed "money grab". I'm only happy that Next came out of the race healthy.

The Breeders Cup races are seldom won by the best horses. Hard to figure why. Is it because they are run too late in the year? One thing I noticed was that there were far too many horses in this race, it was ridiculous.

The "best horses" are ALWAYS subjective. The one constant is that we can usually count on the "Euro-horses" doing well in the BC turf races, and NOT doing well in the BC dirt races.

There was not far too many horses in this race? There was only 14, that's the standard US size for a horse race (tracks like Gulfstream only allow for 12 per race since the track is smaller). In Europe, it's common to see 20+ horses in a single race every single time. Also, just because a horse is favored doesn't mean he is the best horse on that particular day, as a lot more plays into a race than just being favorite

Ryan Moore still doesn't understand racing on dirt and American racing after all these years. With the exception of Zenyatta, you have to be near the pace in American classic races...they are fast paced. He likes to make a late run, and as a result he tends to take his horses out of the equation by giving them too much to do when riding on dirt. European owners, RM is not the jockey to win classic dirt races for you.

@@Steven-r2w9b on turf its not.... but all dirt races are sprints by nature of dirt racing is sprinting to the finish they are fast sprints regardless of furlongs they go as fast in first and 2nd quaters at 4 and 5f as they do at 1m 9f and 10f if you compare a 1miler stretched out over the dirt in a 10f to a 10f turf horse the dirt horse would be considered a sprinter, they all are just some stay the distance more than others.
