Dude just years and years of doing it. I did go to music school, but even before that, it’s really just about doing it consistently. There are also great resources out there like URM and Mix with the Masters

Legit question though, how long of a scale length bass do you need to achieve these ridiculously low tunings?

@ good question. Meshuggah manages to get a nice bass tone for their lower tunings. Dingwall make 37 inch scale basses. Some basses are 39-40 inches. Just because the guitar tuning is low, doesn’t mean the bass needs to match that particular octave to sound good either.
