Ma'am how is the job market after completing LLM from UBC?
@mshappyfeet71684 жыл бұрын
Well, the straight answer is that it’s tough and the recruitment process here is very different from India. For instance, there is no placement/campus selection system, there are university resources to guide you but you have to find your own job!! Also it depends on what LLM you are going for, the legal sector is very regulated here so there are certain stages you need to get through for example if you are going for LLM Common Law you need to find and complete articling and licensing program in that province first before you can start working as a lawyer. The market is tough and now because of COVID things are a bit more difficult than usual but everyone gets a job, it’s only a matter of time! For articling, students send out about 100 to 300 applications on an average, that is what I was told, I personally sent around 160 applications (for posted and non- posted positions) all over Canada and that’s very common here! And there are many other factors like what kind of a job you are looking for, what’s your immigration status, what’s your status in the licensing process etc. Like I said we all get there, but it’s a matter of time, some people get a job right after graduation some have to wait for months!

Hello I hope you get this message in best of your health. I am a law student in India and intend to move to canada. I have few questions, I really hope you manage some time out your busy schedule to answer my questions. 1. The law that we study in India, is it upto some extent similar to law of Canada? 2. Do Canadians or Canadian Law firms prefer foreign trained lawyers? 3. In terms of knowledge does Ryerson’s LPP help you stand equivalent to a Canadian law graduate? 4. Being an outsider in a new country, on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard it is to get clients? 5. Does Ryerson’s LPP acquaint you with clerical process of courts? I will be very grateful to you. I have been looking for all these answers for a very long time. I really hope to hear from you.

LLM common is only offered by a handful universities but there are many other good law school that offer other LLM programs, you will need to check out what specializations they offer but a few good names I can think of are Osgoode law, university of Ottawa, university of western Ontario, Windsor university, Queens, Thompson Rivers university in BC, Dalhousie University’s law school in Nova Scotia, university of Alberta! Mostly research based LLM are a lot cheaper then the course based LLMs, if that is something that interests you!

Hi, so I have a question. If I don't pursue LLM and give the NCA exams instead, would have affect the process of giving the licensing exams in Canada. Like, does LLM prepare you for the licensing tests. And if I'm only giving NCA's how difficult would it be to clear the licensing exams without any Canadian law education.

@mshappyfeet71683 жыл бұрын
Depends on which LLM program you are looking for, the fee differs with specialization. I am talking about the fee for LLM common law in the video. Look for the fee per credit, current amount per credit that the website shows is $1,199.45, for international students, and to complete the LLMCL program you will need 30 credits, so whatever is the fees per credit, multiply it by 30 and that would be your tuition fees.. effective May 2021 the LLMCL fees for international students is $35,983.50.

Compare to JD and LLMcl, which one gives better footing in the career? And if NCA is required for a foreign law graduate even after doing JD?
@mshappyfeet71683 жыл бұрын
NCA is not required after JD, NCA process is only for people who have completed their JD or LLB outside of Canada. JD of course will give you a better footing as compared to LLMCL, because JD offers more exposure in terms of education and training, you will be studying a wider range of courses, will have 2 summer training opportunities and then Articling, whereas, LLMCL is only 1 year of studying, your course options will be limited as compared to JD and you will have to look for Articling straight away, without any summer training experience or if you wait for the summer training then there might be a gap of few months in between! You need to weigh both options together, in terms of duration, cost, admission process etc. and see what works best for you. Also for JD in Canada, you will have to crack LSAT and you will also need an undergraduate degree.

I studied LLM Common Law, these are specialized programs designed for foreign trained lawyers. I obtained my NCA assessment and then opted for the NCA courses as part of my LLM. I had to complete 5 mandatory courses for NCA which were a total of 16 credits I believe and then my law school had another mandatory research course of 5 credits for NCA Candidates. This was a total of 21 credits and I needed 30 credits to complete the LLM so I took other courses to complete the remaining 9 credits for the LLM. Once I completed my LLMCL degree I provided NCA with my final transcript and a letter from the University confirming that I have completed the LLM and all NCA courses and the NCA then issued my Certificate of Qualification.

You don’t need to take NCA exams only if you are studying LLM common law and opting for all of your NCA course as part of your LLM curriculum. Unless you compete your NCA courses as part of your LLM Common Degree, you will need to take those exams. A masters degree in not a necessity to practice law though some sort of Canadian education will add a lot of value to your profile. You can skip the LLM part but I would highly recommend finding an Articling position which is basically a few months of paid internship or go for an LPP training but those will really help you gain work experience in Canada before you start applying for jobs as a lawyer. Practice here is very different so going through the training makes your chances of getting a job a lot better!!

It’s hard to say anything for sure, they might! Usually most good universities ask for at least 70% marks but if you have other things to supplement your grades like community involvement, work experience, internships, moot courts etc. Anything that can upgrade your profile overall might help!! I would say there is no harm in depending on what else you have to offer, in addition to your grades. If you don’t wanna spend $100-150 without being sure that you stand a chance, best thing to do is writing to the law school. Explain to them what your background is, what program you are interested in applying for, and your grades and other achievements. And simply ask whether it is worth applying! If they have a strict % requirement, they will let you know!

You will only have to show your grades for your LLB degree if it is a 5 year program, if you have an undergraduate degree and a 3 yr LLB then you will have to provide transcripts for both degrees, and for all terms, not just final year. Most law schools in India provide a final transcript for all semesters, if you have that then you just need to submit that final transcript with marks from all semesters.
