NEB had a great serving strategy aiming for the seam between 1 and 6. Plus, their freshmen showed up and out this game. Congrats to them! Texas setter change was their best call; the energy was way better with Saige on the court. Bigger block, better choices in broken plays, and she spread the ball a lot more! I don't mind Jhenna coming back at the end of the set but I think they should've at least started Saige in the 4th to get that energy going again. Set 3 was what I expected this match to be. High level, back and forth volleyball, it was anybody's game at that pace. I do wish Texas was more gracious in their loss. They didn't wave or show any respect to Nebraska in the end. I understand the rivalry and disappointment but I also believe in sportsmanship and humility especially when the game is over. Good season Horns and good luck Huskers!

I just want to aknowledge the incredible impact this Nebraska freshman class has in this match. Last year when they met in this exact same scenario, nothing was going Nebraska's way. Their backrow defense wasn't fully there, the front row defense was no where to be found with Stivrins injured, Sun and Kubik's blocking was lacking for most of the time and the offense wasn't raw at all. Now you have one of the best Nebraska's back row defense since i dont know what year with Rodriguez running it, Knuckles, Akana and Hames there to contribute. Now, you have a completely healthy Stivrins to go from pin to pin to get some block touches. Kubik being the target in the serve receive game and rocking it for the most part of the match. And now add to all of that, the power and fearless of two incredible freshman Ally and Lindsay. And dont get me started with the confidence they have in their serve game. What a moment for this team to peak for real. Maybe they lose in the semifinals maybe they don't but the experience and the confidence this freshman class is going to get from this tournament, is whats going to make them be VERY dangerous in the next 3 or 4 years.

Very much disagree with the commentators that Logan shouldn't be called for a throw late in the game, because she wasn't earlier. Just no. Throws are illegal. They need to be called. The fact that they weren't called earlier doesn't make the later call wrong. It makes the earlier calls wrong. Logan very well knows she's pushing the boundaries here. She shouldn't be rewarded for it. She needs to be told to stop it. It's like being let go for speeding by an officer and then to keep abusing the good grace of that officer by continuing to speed. Some have argued "Well, that's not the same thing. Speeding isn't a judgement call. Throws are." Okay then, if throws are a judgement call, then the refs have every right to call it however and whenever they want -- to use their judgement in applying the rules. Especially if they see a player abusing the rules over and over. And another thing. Suppose that throw was on match point and Texas wins. Should they be allowed to win by an illegal play only because it wasn't called earlier? How blatant would the play have to be then before it should be called, given the earlier judgements? And recognize that the refs only have a split second to make these judgements. They're not going to be perfect at it.
@bryansales18013 жыл бұрын
While I agree with most of everything you say, I do agree that in sports, setting the tone early is what every good ref should do. You set yourself up for being called biased or giving the team that gets called out, an excuse or scapegoat.

The officials put themselves in a tough spot when they let it go early in the match, it's so hard to judge what is the tipping point to call it a throw. And of course the players are going to continue doing it until it's called, they're trying to win a huge game. The best thing the officials could've done was tell Nebraska they simply missed the first call, and then tell the same to Texas later when they call it right the second time.

once a call has been made you have to uphold similar plays to the same standard for the rest of the game. An example of this would be calling a double on a setter. Suppose a team wins by making a similar illegal play late in the game but is allowed to win, all based on a split second decision made by mistake earlier in the game. What's fair about that? What if it was your team that lost because of this? Would you be happy about it? Wouldn't it make more sense for the ref to try and do better the very next opportunity rather than let the mistake continue? And keep in mind, I'm sure the player in question most likely knows she is skirting the boundaries. IMO she has no right to be upset if she's finally called on it no matter when it happens. And about the consistency argument, shouldn't being consistent from game to game be more important than within a game? Isn't that what rules are for?Otherwise it all just becomes arbitrary.
@Frosticus4533 жыл бұрын
@@slartibartfast1268 I mean, whatever coach is encouraging Eggleston to throw the ball is doing her a disservice as it will be called at the next level. Considering how much she relies on that crutch it could really hurt her game. That said, if they didn't call her other 6 or so throws, then it is strange to call in at that point.
@baylietrout78883 жыл бұрын
@@slartibartfast1268 yes you are right that it was illegal and the ref should have recognized that and overturned the call. However, plays like lifts and double contacts are arbitrary and left to the refs judgement. Since these plays are arbitrary it is difficult to enforce a standard across the board. Which is why it is left to the refs judgement during individual games. Their focus of the game is to set a standard. This standard is the basis for unbiased and non corrupt refereeing. So, when a ref makes that first initial call they set the standard for similar plays across the board. (Meaning Nebraska could’ve made a similar play if they wanted but chose not too I’m assuming bc they know it’s wrong.) Without this idea it doesn’t set a precedent for refs to hold themselves to and the game becomes arbitrary and potentially unfair. There fore the ref shouldn’t suddenly change his mind the next play. Not only would it cause a bit of a mess since they didn’t call the initial play (bc then it would really be unfair to both sides) It can also lead to the ref being accused of corruption or caving under pressure. Which is why that call on Logan was a big deal bc he was not following the standard he set for the entire game. Sometime you get crappy refs that set terrible standards and that’s what happened this game. It happens no system is perfect no ref is perfect.

I suppose I didn't expect Texas to pass so poorly. I get that they have no depth in hitting, but don't they have like a dozen DS's on the bench? Woulda coulda, but I'd have yanked Gabriel and had her put the dark jersey on. Torres is a solid setter and Iosia looked lost out there serving lollipops (I thought she was a good server?) in to the net over and over and shanking balls left and right. When the libero is the serving target you are in trouble. Yank Phillips (she can't get kills unless in system, which is basically the only job a Right Side has), move Fields to RS (she can't pass anyway) and promote Parra to P2. Probably still would have lost, but instead Elliot just watched them drown while Eggleston practiced her dunks for basketball tryouts.

Texas needs a coach and a setter. They are too predictable, they play same way every match. I watched three matches one day, it seemed like the same matches with different opponents. You can't have as much talent as Texas and play where every scout knows what you do are going to do next. Talent can only you get you so far. They need a new coach and a taller setter who make better decisions.

It’ll be interesting to see how they do with the addition of UCLA’s libero, Third Team & PAC-12 conference libero of the year on Texas’ team & if it’ll be enough on top of their other recruits. Also Skylar Fields being the transfer portal is crazy to consider as well. I just watched a podcast where Stivrin says that when Nebraska plays they’re having fun & enjoy it even when they’re down. But then she said Texas looked like they wanted to kill each other. And when Nebraska would win or lose a point they would focus on each other to bring them up, but if Texas lost a point they would watch the other team celebrate instead of focusing on their own team. With Eggleston I saw a lot of both. Sometimes she would try to get her teammates to refocus & regroup, but it wouldn’t be enough because it’s just her doing it.
@jonjonjrfrmcali3 жыл бұрын
Texas signed not one, but two Liberos for 2022 including two-time Pac-12 LOTY and All-American Zoe Fleck. This will have a profound effect for the Longhorns. The likely scenario is that Fleck replaces Iosia as Libero while the latter moves to DS, or sub. This also puts Melanie Parra at the front line as a hitter. No more DS for Parra. Apparently Texas is learning what Nebraska already knew. And that is that the key to a great offense is a great defense.
