Growing Hemp for Fiber

Hemp can be grown for many purposes, one of which is to produce fiber. In this video, we head to California's San Joaquin Valley to learn how to grow hemp for fiber - including deciding when to seed and when to harvest, determining seeding rates and seeding methods, irrigation, pest management, harvesting methods, drying methods, and processing. The video also explains how to achieve high-quality fiber and the benefits of incorporating hemp grown for fiber into a crop rotation and whole-farm plan.

Back in the days they would use pond or dew retting to help separate the fiber and the rest of the stalk, then put it through a breaker bench and comb it out by hand. Good you got machinery to do that job.

hemp is often grow as an annual crop commercially but they naturally grow as perennial shrubs in the tropics and milder temperate places

What makes them say that soil microbial life drops off when the plant goes to into reproductive phase? It doesn't stop making exudates or needing the relationship with the microbes.

Plants don't stop making exudates during the reproductive phase, but during that time, more sugars are allocated to the plant's reproductive organs than to its roots. It still produces root exudates, but fewer, during the reproductive phase.
