BMW dealers plus various car magazines have always said it's primarily there to allow you to direct cold air to to your face whilst the car stays warm - this then stops you becoming drowsy with warm air on your face.

I absolutely love this feature in my 2017 550i...my a/c blows so cold that even if I have temp control to say 82 it still blows too cold sometimes...I was going ecopro mode to get it to not blow so cold but then I recalled the vent control...problem solved...I love my Bimmer.

I was hoping this video would actually explain why these things exist. If the temperature is too cool, why wouldn't you just turn up the temperature?

It comes in handy when my wife is in the car. She always cold, but I hate hot air blowing on me. I can turn up the climate for her but keep cool air blowing on me.

If 60 degrees is too cool maybe the person should set there ac to 70.... I will never understand that switch in all BMW's!! It's a second temperature switch, why isn't there a second start/stop switch, a second gear shifter and a second gas peddle also... It just doesn't make sense :/ everytime I switch my ac in the morning to heat I feel like I'm going threw procedures I use to start my plane! lol

Corbin Williams Because as a passenger, you might be uncomfortable with what the driver has set. You have your own "personal choice", it's a funky idea but also a luxury feature nonetheless. In an aviation perspective, when flying commercially as a passenger, we'd shut off the air vent above us when the pilots are sending too hot/cold air into the cabin.

The only way this button would make any sense at all is if you were on a floor and vent setting and it were to change difference in temperature between the vent and floor vents. Sadly, I don't think this is the actual case.....but it might work that way for heat. Climate Control in BMW's is a bit of a joke anyway. To deselect one item, like the direction of air, and lose the automation of fan speed to reach temperature doesn't make a lot of sense to me. IMO, once the auto is selected, is should continue as individual selections are selected manually, until all possible selections are manually made. Its really just air direction and fan speed anyway.
