@abhinaygarg87922 жыл бұрын
Suicides are the last resort to any person when he/she is left with no hope for the future or finds him/herself unable to (mentally or physically) cope with challenges because of past experiences. The figures who contemplate suicides may actually be much higher than the ones who have actually attempted it. Many of us who may not even contemplate such a step may also be in subconscious distress numbing ourselves with alcohol, cigarette or the content from Social Media, News Circus, etc. The SOCIETY needs to have an introspection in the direction we are going. 'Celebrating Failures' which form the bulk of lived experiences should be the way forward. A Happy Human is more important than a Prosperous Human.

Thank you Mr Gupta for drawing the attention to an issue that impacts all of our lives, in one way or the other. That something in their situation drives someone to commit suicide is very unfortunate and not easy to fathom for normal people. Dying is easy and living is hard but before that crucial step, talk to someone and reach out to a friend or a family. I struggled with mental illness for many years and these thoughts crossed my mind. With my wife' support and God's grace I was able to overcome the illness. Also in Hinduism committing suicide is a major sin and can lead to lower births in future lives. Hope things improve for those who are struggling.

I disagree on your judgement on suicide. If someone wants to choose how he should die, especially when there are ways to die without pain, why should that be a problem for society? Why do you want to impose on somebody that they should undergo so-called “natural” death where they have no choice on the pain they are going to suffer?

10:47 How come the declining percentage of farmers in the suicides a good thing for you when the absolute figures are stagnant at 10-12 thousand. You should not be considering the rate of growth of population when analyzing the suicide numbers of last 10 years. Because children of 1-10 years old wont do suicide. So infact our population base is decreasing yet suicide numbers are increasing in last 10 years.

I think there is an error in the table (13:30) or in Shekhar ji's notes. The number of daily wage workers dying by suicide has always been more than the number of housewives committing suicide. Good classic cut the clutter which I like. I used to see NCRB data from time to time to understand agrarian stress. However understated their numbers might be, it's an important indication towards societal trends. One must map this government's flagship projects to some of the indicators that come out their report. Few examples - Kishan Samman Nidhi, reduces farmer's stress. Mudra yojana aims at reducing stress on small self employed people. More needs to be done still.

When I look at the chart at 13:45, I believe we are correctly categorising numbers. Numbers in 'Others' are reduced, while 'daily wage earners' are increased. Daily wage earners are so ignored that I doubt they have been a part of 'Others' for very long. Once we establish that there has been little change in the trend, things appear more realistic than dramatic. Finally, these are not numbers but people who have suffered. We must strive to be a society in which not even one number is included in this figure. Keeping politics aside, solutions should be designed to benefit everyone. It's unheard of in Bangladesh. Early marriages were used to be a problem, but such marriages are now illegal in Bangladesh. I remember when famine occurs wealthy people will be very active in providing large gatherings of food are cooked and those who need are provided a ticket and when all cooking is done, people will come with the ticket and enough food that they can take with them. Bangladesh also distributes people with Ration Card for food. Bangladesh went through famine in '71 Liberation War in Bangladesh.

SG, I am very disappointed with today's CTC. I get that the farmer-suicide stereotype is not founded in data, and this can lead to harmful policy decisions. However, how can one make a 20 min segment on suicides without talking about the severe mental health crisis in the country and the impacts of that on families? Our suicide prevention systems are fragmented and are run either by states or mostly by NGOs, with or without govt support. Our media (even while talking about suicide statistics) fails to acknowledge mental illness and encourage pople to seek help long before people reach the stage of self harm and suicide. Financial stressors are a sizable contributor, but the fact that the largest contributor is cited as family relations makes it clear (at least to me) all is not well in Indian homes. I really wish today's CTC had deleved into these nuances (and included a link to suicide hotlines) - than be solely dedicated to puncturing the oppositions' narratives.

Problems like low quality seeds, loans for Infrastructure Development, MSP , cheap Electricity have to address in Very seriously. Most of them doe because of dept repayment. Due to climate change there will be heavy rains or very less rainfall. And Timing of rains will effect farmers very badly. Due to diesel price increase the investment also increase. Machinary runs on these fuels. So everything falls apart. So root cause has been not still figured out. The amount of stress it brought due to GST and Demonetization is very High. And Farmers sons are leaving India because they fed up with low quality education, health care facilities , High corruption. Covid was biggest failure of this government still no increase in budget on health care. It's show's lack of Intent. Education has been neglected. Resently an Incedent (Telangana)Happened a child has fell into well and passed away but out of hope they rushed to private hospital as government doctors were not present near by. The child dead by the they reached hospital, doctors still admitted and asked to pay bill of more than 1 lakhs. This is the situation in rural areas.

SG often tells in CTC that every word uttered by anyone is politics but here he says we shouldn't politicise deaths of farmers, which is totally contrary to what he preaches. He should know suicide is not an honorable act hence many suicides are not even registered. Farm deaths are many more than what these chart depicted. Further, causes of death don't correlate with type of people who died by suicides. There is something wrong in NCRB report

Number of views and comments on this video in comparison to other CTCs itself shows how much thought people are willing to give to this issue.

The political demagogues have created such a hype about the farmers' suicide. Even the farmers seem to believe their rhetoric and indulge in self-pity. Although there is nothing good about a suicide, it heartening to know that the farmers are not dying in lakhs or millions as some of the so-called pro-farmer politicians would have us believe. As regards lesser suicidal tendency amongst women, prima facie, it shows that the women are more realient, and men suffer more stress, contrary to the popular belief to the contrary. It seems that men are more fragile and breakable. In the society around me, I have noticed that a widowed woman lives longer than a widower.

Great episode which is data driven instead of assuming things. But I just want some more clarity.. Shouldn't we fake percentage of people dying with total in that group? Like what percentage of farmers are committing suicide and also what percentage of salaried employees are committing suicide. The base was the total population, which I think is wrong base to deduce things.

Good episode. But having a huge problem in terms of the data analysis. Absolutely no mention of the percentage of population of a particular group. E.g. if 14% of all suicides are committed by housewives but the percentage of their population is 30% , then housewives may actually have a lower rate than some other groups. Whereas every suicide is tragic analysing this based on the percentage of population of the group will help identify the professions that are worst impacted.
