Dressed in ethnic Indian wear and precipitating an almost Rock-Fan reaction from those in attendance , Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo in early January stressed on the need to ascertain that every system in the world ensures dignity for every individual as a core belief. "We just can't treat the economically backward as failures, that would be a victorian approach," said Banerjee during the launch of the duo's book "Good economics for Hard Times", published by juggernaut. Staying away from jargons, and talking about their work to an audience that mostly comprised youngsters from different walks of life and not just economics, the duo, which donated their Nobel prize money to the Weiss Fund administered by Harvard for research in development economics, ensured that the session punctuated with humour stayed relaxed and interactive. During "The juggernaut Dialogue" moderated by the media person Prannoy Roy, Esther Duflo pointed out that it was wrong to assume that giving handouts to the poor made them lazy. Banerjee said that their research had shown that the same made them enthusiastic, We have tested this theory across countries. Also why do we always tend to blame these individuals when there are starks all around?

If RCTs are used as evidence for public policies, they must be shielded from unfair practices like private funding. Because then they'll become tools for big businesses to exert covert control over public policies. Otherwise like big pharma influences RCTs in medical industry, big companies may try the same, using economists as their lobbying groups

I would like to know how bannerjee's and duflo's company generates revenue. They do research which requires alot of capital plus there is no incentive for companies or governments to support them financially. Why would a company, who is already earning enough, invest in them to do research that affects the well being of people and not help them increase their sales. Similarly why would the government give then fundings for work that doesn't increase their votebank.

Indians get very excited when they hear stories of obtaining prosperity via clever tinkering that itself is not very expensive but will usually require govt. intervention...govt tinkering. The real truth is that nothing other than more energy can fix the problems of poverty, and it is a blessing that Modi govt and also Congress before Modi (to a lesser degree) has been working to increase energy supply, generally via coal. India was slow to industrialize after 1948 due to alignment with USSR and is rather late to the game now. India's protectionist tarriffs have limited Indian exports and that has also slowed industrialization. Huge numbers of Engineering graduates in India are unable to find work despite the sincerity of their study efforts and that too is because of protectionism. Best solution for India is to open up to imports from select nations to which goods manufactured in India can be exported, and of course keep growing the energy sector.

I don't think employment depends that much on population. Look at Singapore and Japan, their population density is relatively high but look at their unemployment rate and the quality of their jobs. Infant mortality is one of the factors that creates high social unrest. For some reason social unrest is a good parameter that determines economic growth and development. Higher the social unrest worse the development.

@@VithiSingh Assume you're a parent and one of your child dies due to malaria. You would be under a significant stress and emotionally unstable. This is not a proven fact but there are many studies that show humans don't behave rationally when they are under stress or are emotionally unstable. Thus when many children die the intelligence of the whole population is somewhat compromised. Just look at our own 2 states, kerala and bihar. Bihar faces relatively lot more social issues compared to kerala. Also bihar is the one with much higher birth rate compared to kerala. Kerala 1.4 and bihar 3.6. Meaning that your hypothesis that some children dying might be economically beneficial to other proportion that's alive is not true.
