He had a wierd stiff legged run that looked like a granpa shuffle , so not sure if its incorrect , but he didnt get the desired result from it. And im 45 now, old and fat (well, fat as a skinny rake can get fat) and can still do it in 11.5 , so it seems good form can make up for old and heavy lol

There’s a lot of good art teachers out there. I had a few good ones here and there. Had some really absent and incomprehensible ones too. Good inkers you can look up are Alphonso Dunn, a biology teacher and art teacher, and David Finch, who is a really good comic artist. Scott Williams is a great inker to look up too. He often uses a sable 2 brush I think.

I actually know this stuff. It's standard pro stuff. (I'm not a pro, relax!) But Neal knew this about 40 years before me, probably. He taught those kids the correct way to draw a line. It's like this: shoulder for bigger, longer lines. Details, you can go in and draw using "tripod grip" with your fingers (but also come in at a straight angle, like he said at the beginning.) Now one thing I didn't know, is you can create a near perfect circle using that roll technique he showed at the very beginning of this video. This is why I'm here, to learn more. I hope you learned something too today. Keep drawing, kings and queens!

wow this is all good advice for handwriting in general since I've been learning how to write cursive better and using fountain pens its all just like he says. You use your arm to write and not your fingers and you need to position you pen differently as well. You can blame ball point pens, typewriters and now computers for the slow decay of handwriting and using a pen in general. iirc in France and Germany you still need to use a fountain pen in school but here in the states its pretty much all handwriting is an afterthought I think after what elementary school you start using computers for everything. I can imagine many children never really learn how to write properly. I do find that schools really do a disservice on using hand tools and focus too much on computer literacy.

I learned this year or the previous that the way I was using my arm to draw was wrong. It was also tiring my wrist and elbow quite fast. I learned that its better to use the elbow or shoulder to draw lines. I also learned that holding a pencil lightly when sketching helps. Im noticing even digitally that my inking lines are getting better with this. holding a drawing utensil/tool lightly as if though you want to drop it from your hand is how to properly hold it and glide across the canvas/display/paper.
@loringbush14553 жыл бұрын
Practice makes perfect! I've been inking comics for 7 years now! He forgot to mention when your inking put a piece of paper underneath your hand so that you don't smear it all over the place! Also ink the characters first allow it to dry and ink the panel boarders and the backgrounds last. Next allow that to dry finally touch up your artwork and go over the areas that you missed! That's how I ink and it will save you alot of time fustration whiteout and money!

People don’t understand how lucky they are to hear Neal talk about stuff like this. When I worked for him as a kid just starting out, he really offered up nothing about drawing. I watched him, and stole this from him by watching him do it. But he gave no reason for it. But I stole any technique I could glean from him about anything I saw him do. In the end it worked for me. I wished he’d done what he does here though. 😂😂😂

I wonder if it is more like your shoulder is connected to your center of mass down by your belly or waist for real efficiency. I wonder how that would affect your drawing if you envisioned directing your pen by pointing with your bellybutton with small movements so that the shoulder and arm become an extension of the center of mass like they do in martial arts and dance (especially with veil work or connecting your body with a partner)
