In a 1967 interview, Martin Luther King Jr. said that his "dream has turned into a nightmare". While the United States fashions itself as the global exemplar of equal opportunity, heightened income inequality, the overturn of Roe v. Wade and accusations of systematic racism, amongst other issues, has lead some to cast serious doubt on the American Dream as the harbinger of social equality. Should the countries seek to emulate the American model, or look towards alternatives to ameliorate their social inequalities? Does the United States continue to be that shinning city on a hill, or has the American Dream become a false idol in the name of social mobility?
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

What I took away by the end is that the proposition wasn't correctly posed. The American Dream as an individual quest by ordinary citizens is detached from the American foreign policy, even though someone may argue that the former leads to the latter. Maybe the proposition should have been something like: "American foreign policy is a global nightmare." A different debate might have been: "The American dream is a myth." In that regard, I believe the opposition lost the former debate and won the latter.

I just think the whole debate was a setup. No conservatives? No real debate; period.

I believe that you missed what Ms. Day said in her speech, that the individual dream is universal instead of sole American. Whereas the dream of the American Elites, not just the foreign policies alone, led to disastrous consequences to the world. The opposition side's argument is illogical in that they either used individual experiences as evidence, which is statistically biased, therefore invalid, or used unfavorable alternatives, mostly autocratic regimes, not developed countries of the western world. Their arguments are invalid.

As a part of the debate is the vote which happens as the chamber exists. If it's not a secret vote, I wonder if those tallies couldn't be recorded and presented as part of the 8 video narrative. While debates such as these aren't about winning or losing but instead creating a dialogue within the attendees; I do believe understanding if the chamber was swayed would allow the viewer of these debates, who sometimes arrive at them well after they've been published, an insight in to the mind of not just the debaters but also the members of the union.

In this case no, because the representation was all one sided. Even the guests for the American dream were a contradiction and therefore didn't give the full picture for the American dream. Why were there no conservative speakers from America there?😠

@@biggoards2772 Scott Brown, a US Ambassador was the Forth speaker. He also was the 2014 Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in New Hampshire. He spoke eloquently. With that information presented I have to apologize to you, but I don't understand your point. However, I respect that this may be some mistake on my part or I'm misreading your comment. Additionally, and not beleaguer the point but my comment was about including an extra piece to all the debates. In other words, a video shot of people exiting and the door they choose, or a counter to tally the vote as examples. I actually didn't ask a question so I'm also not following "in this case no". Perhaps you responded to the wrong comment?

@@rezarcher Didn't Scott Brown openly say he was a Biden supporter? Sorry, "has alot of respect for Biden". I truly believe like Liz Cheney, he is Republican in title only. There's an argument to be made about that. So one "semi" Republican and a panel full of leftists arguing about the American dream; the robustness just isn't showing. That's like when Sam Seder calls himself a "Libertarian", when in fact his views are marxist in nature. Scott Brown just listed positives of what America has done globally, but didn't directly talk about the merits of the "American dream". He talked as if he was on the senate floor, rather then point out what makes the dream real. For example; we as Americans are diverse, specifically because people came from across the globe to chase the American dream; many of whom succeeded. We are one of a few countries that can say openly, that 70% of our people are immigrants or children of immigrants. It could be argued that our capitalist society is flawed and misused or misrepresented at times, but the ideals still remain. Those ideals are what ALL Americans strive for; including those who denounce or reject capitalism and democracy in all its forms. Admittedly, Scott was half right in representing the results of that prosperity, but failed to mention the ideal of the TRUE free market, give and take system. Instead he pointed out how we give and don't receive in return, which belittles our endgoal of "give and take".

@@biggoards2772 I am not involved in a Republican Party 'which hunt' to ferret out those party members who are not "conservative enough". However, in my opinion, if you ran and were selected by a party to represent one of the oldest states in the nation for Senate... I would argue that's as republican as it gets. It might not be as conservative as it gets. Then again, as you get to the fringes of any group you begin to find extremists and I would argue the world does not need more extremist regardless of the variety. In summation, if your argument is that "Scott Brown is not Conservative enough for my Extremist values." Then I feel compelled to mention that that is not a particularly attractive shade on anyone. That said, I have no opinion on your comment. I wish you well in your endeavor.

@@rezarcher It's more about his inability to represent his argument properly. Extremism is an overused word that is used more as an umbrella term. You'd first have to give me your definition of extremist so I could understand your argument better. As for Scott; my point is, his argument was a typical cookie cutter argument and was more akin to beauracratic nonsense then a real argument. I would have rather seen someone like Ben Shapiro, Glenn Loury or Michio Kaku make the argument. All of whom have ACTUALLY succeeded at this experiment in striving for the American dream.(John Stossel would have been another good pick). True not all these picks are conservative technically, but they can represent the "conservative" or "patriotic" argument better.
