Did anyone forget that STEVE PERRY is not only one of the most amazingly talented vocalist, but a song writer as well. Most of their major hit songs STEVE PERRY WROTE!!! B4 Steve joined the band, Journey was not doing well. Perry made Journey popular, famous, won them awards. He made the band back then & still today bc they r singing songs all of the major hit songs in which Steve wrote or helped write. Without these songs, no1 would know who the f*** Journey was!! Why Steve did nothing in a legal aspect when he left the band is baffling. Songs he wrote or played a big role in writing shouldn't legally b allowed to b covered by Journey without Steve

When you think of Van Halen - you always thought of Eddie Van Halen - didn't matter who lead singer was - he was the identifying act that fans paid for. The same with Journey. While Neil and Jonathan feel they are the "band" and that's what fans are paying for, they are wrong - most Journey fans associate the band with Steve Perry. For the 20 plus years since Steve Perry, Journey has been doing nothing more than trying to imitate the Steve Perry sound. Arnel has done a great job. I saw Journey this past spring and was truly disappointed because Neil was more concerned about how he sounded to the point that you couldn't even hear Arnel. At least a class band opened that had a good and original sound - TOTO. I have watched Neil interviews time after time and he's stuck on himself and he's married to another self absorbing person who is sticking her nose into it for one reason only - $$$$$. I am glad I had the opportunity to see Journey thru the years with Steve Perry as lead and other singers but this new Journey, while polished, has lost it's true luster and I will never see them again or even listen to anything they do - the past will be locked into a special place.

A number of the songs included in the trademark registration have Perry listed as the lone songwriter. Others are group compositions. Cain and Schon sold their respective personal copyrights on Journey's catalog to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund a few years ago. Steve Perry did not. Perry's lawsuit accuses Cain and Schon of using "false or misleading information" to secure the trademarks, which were granted between February and May.

@Cecilia, I'm glad that you know what is really going on. That's exactly why Steve Perry filed the lawsuit. I read the complete 37-page petition which was filed on Sept. 2022. It is entitled "Petition for Cancellation". There are 20 songs which Neal and Jon registered to their JN Freedom LLC business. The petition was submitted to cancel the 20 songs trademark registrations, registered in the name of JN Freedom LLC. Just like you said Neal and Jon sold their rights to those 20 songs years ago. Neal in 2019 and Jon in 2020. It mentions this fact in the Petition for Cancellation. The trademarks for the songs were granted to JN Freedom LLC between Feb. 2022 and May 2022. Steve never sold his rights to the songs which make him and Hipgnosis Songs the sole owners of the 20 songs in question. The petition basically wants to stop the use of these songs for marketing t-shirts, jackets and other memorabilia items because Neal and Jon are no longer the rightful owners of these songs. But now they have these songs trademarked to their business. There was never any mention of any monetary compensation in the petition from Neal or Jon, only the request to cancel those songs which were registered in the name of Neal and Jon's business. Clowns like Eddie Trunk and The Real Music Observer are always stirring up the pot for controversy and drama, when they can find out and present the facts of what the real reasoning is behind the scenes. The things with Ross Valory and Steve Smith isn't the way they are presenting it either. It deals with Neal and Jon not wanting to include Steve Smith within the Nightmare Productions and dealing with him getting his retirement pension for being in the band. Those two were against it. That is why Herbie and Steve took Ross and Steve Smith's side. Both Herbie (at that time) and Steve still had an interest in Nightmare Productions.

There's confusion here over "trademark" and "copyright". A "trademark" is a mark (name, logo) under which one engages in trade, ie trade-mark (makes money). A "copyright" is the "exclusive right to make a copy", ie copy-right, like a recording is a copy of the song for example, and is the equivalent to ownership. Songs are not trademarked, they are copywritten. "Journey" as a name is trademarked, not copyrighted. You and I can't form a band and call it "Journey" and sell tickets, the public expecting to see the real Journey. "Journey" is the name (mark) under which the owners of the name engage in trade (sell tickets), they own that property (intellectual property, meaning an idea as opposed to a physical object). Trademark and Copyright are often confused, and even lumped in with Patent, another thing entirely.

First of all it was Greg and Neal, then came Steve P. Jon Cain came in after S.P. And why Jon not talking, he must know something. I think Neal was wrong for not letting S.P. know . What him, his wife and Jon end on what they was up to. And why Neal didn't tell Greg what was going on. Greg brought Neal in from the beginning. Neal is all for money have been and still is. I think Neal have been jealous of S.P. from the get go. Cause S.P. was in for the music, Neal had dollars signs on the brains. That why he didn't was to take a break from touring. I don't blame S.P. for stepping down, to work on his health. U can see today how S.P. has tooken care of his self. Back in 97/98 when Neil and Cain decided to move on without Perry, Steve got his lawyers to workout a deal. I’m not sure of the exact #’s, but Steve was to remain a part of the Journey “corporation”. I believe he still gets a 12.5% share of everything they do (merchandise, concerts, etc..). It was his choice to not be bought out. This is probably why he hasn’t really done anything since leaving Journey. He basically gets paid to do nothing while they’re constantly touring.

Don't ever count on it James. This has become, $$$ fight. Steve has plenty of money, as do the rest. They have plenty to leave their kids, and grand kids to live on. Journey made a name for themselves when Perry joined, thats the reality. Since leaving they have survived on the name, not record sales. Arnel is talented, as was Augerie. But, unfortunately people are trying to relive and continue to go see them. Im glad I saw them on Frontiers tour, and Steve's tour in 90s.

I don't really have an opinion of this one way or another. I think Perry can be a prima donna at times while I feel Neil has milked Journey to the point where at least for me, the brand is tired. Sometimes less is more but every year the band is out touring with different musicians and gimmicks to pique the interest enough to make it sustainable financially. I frankly lost interest after Augeri but am grateful for the music and concert experiences: ROR tour, FTLOSM tour, Arrival Tour, Red 13 Tour.

I'm age 52 and a serious fan of Journey since 1977 ...so many great songs ....at least the music can live on ...eventhough the troubles the bands have are on-going...at least the world has amazing music...it's all a conundrum life on planet Earth...keep on rockin...the new Freedom album song compilation does not disappoint...Journey is my favorite band of all time. I've enjoyed all of their music even the songs before the Infinity album. If you look who wrote most of the hit songs Steve Perry is at least one of the writers in almost all of them. Neal Schon is on some but not nearly as many as the Perry/Cain duo. For some reason almost every interview you hear Neal say, I’m the original member of Journey. He sounds like a spoiled brat. Grow up Neal you can not copy write a song that you didn’t write just because you played the guitar in it. He’s still the 15 year old boy and from all the interviews I’ve listened to on KZbin I’d bet he’s the reason Steve won’t sing with Journey, which is really to bad. Steve’s voice and writing ability got Journey the hits they have today,not Neal’s guitar playing. Honestly, when you hear about great guitar players is Neal even mentioned? Eddie Van Halen and Phil Keaggy are among the greats. As many lawsuits as there have been I’d say, Neal is hard to deal with. It’s so sad and a true mess. To bad Neal isn’t kicked out of the band and Steve came back with Randy Jackson playing bass. That would be awesome!

I believe the problem is that he trade marked everything under his name, and did not discuss it with the band or its partners. If he had trademarked it under Nightmare Productions, or Journey Band Corporation, I don't think it would have been an issue. But, if he trademarked everything under Neal Schon, and then, as he says, no one thought about it, he is trying to pull a fast one, and leave the other partners out of the possible royalties to which they are all entitled.

What is wrong with these guys? They were so good together and though I know even families fight, the average family drama does not tear my musical memories to shreds. These guys got me through my own dysfunctional family drama throughout my teenaged years. I entered into a world where people seemed to be having all the fun that I wasn't having and they took me along with them. How can you write and sing such wonderful words and music together and not be able to speak to each other like human beings should? I did not choose my family. They CHOSE to be Journey members and invited us into the Journey family. My enchanted world becomes a place of total disenchantment! If they can't enjoy what they created, then neither can I. Trademarking protects their income. Neal has been talking about this, for years. Did Steve ever speak up and say no, don't, in the last few years? Filing a lawsuit is a really bad look. Trademarks only help.

Huh? Steve put out his Traces solo album, plus a X-Mas album the next year. Look folks, a decision was made in 1997 to keep the band going, and why was that? Because the brand name, Journey, sells tickets and (hopefully) album sales with new releases, The story about Arnel was an inspiring story, but the brand keeps milking it for nostalgia. How many albums have come out since 1998 that barely charted by Journey? A fair share. There is guilt all over the place on this one. Neil is not innocent here.

Journey was Neil's before Steve & it's Neil's now.Steve was a hired hand & while he was a major part of the band's writing & performing,he's still getting paid for those contributions.He had a number of chances to rejoin them before he was eventually replaced the first time & the last cd he did work on with them in the mid to late 90s was garbage.Plus,rumor is that he was silently involved with Vallory & Smith's attempted power play a couple of years ago.I say keep cashing your royalty checks,put out some solo stuff & stop acting like you were the only reason for their existence.

Perry just want money because he need to make some albums specially Christmas songs and by the way Perry's fans ( he don't perform live anymore) so he just go to shows and later the same things ( like another demand, Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain don't give him another chance to perform on 1998 something like that this Perry's things never ended.

I know people say Perry made the band wrote the songs ok I get that but who wrote the music to the words and it's a band not solo I guess they just didn't get that right or this stuff would not be happening
