Straight from the get go, let me just say, I am a big admirer of Canon cameras, glass and all that the brand stands for. This journey is more to do with moving on to find something lighter, that travels well, that, well... watch the movie you'll see what I mean.
For a full kit run down on what I use, the new shop front is here: www.amazon.co....
BIG huge shout out to Kevin Mullins, whose friendship and professional help I value. This is not a sponsored film by Fujifilm or coerced in any way by Kev, his channel is worth checking, if you haven't already! / documentaryeye

I went to buy A7m3 and I came back with X-T3. I am still in shock. I was shooting Canon for 12 years. X-T3 just took my heart.

I have an A73 and seriously considering getting rid of it. I’ve shot Nikon for years and despite the specs packed into the Sony I just find the Nikon files better. I’m really starting to like the sound of the Fuji with this model and the new GFX50R. I want a camera that is a go anywhere with me type AND it can hold its own with pro jobs. I shoot weddings also and this seems like it could be a winner. My Nikon D4s is going nowhere tho.
@photowalk.podcast
@photowalk.podcast 6 жыл бұрын
I know a few photographic friends really invested in the A73. I haven't used the GFX50R and would love to... I will at some stage. So in terms of file... it'll be a chalk and cheese exercise between this and your D4 - but you already know that. For me, I'm lightening the load for sure, but I'm finding a new colour space sooc that I love. There are times over the last week I have raised my eyebrows and though, hmmm; "I prefer the way Canon do... (this and that)" but I keep coming back to how much fun I'm having shooting with these things... and I'm using them more! My work cameras never came out for anything but pro jobs, and I just don't enjoy using them as much.

Shooting with Fuji is a mind opening experience. I feel the same way as you. I had a Canon 6D for months but when I got my 1st X-T1 in 10 mins I took THE BEST PHOTOS OF MY DAUGHTER in my whole life. Black and white...at night. Fuji frees ur imagination

I am in a similar situation. I had the Nikon D7000 for quite a while but going through the pictures I took in Finland, I was disappointed of the overall low light performance. Now I‘m unsure to upgrade to a A7III, the Fuji X-T3 or try a used D750/D810. The lenses for Sony seem to be very expensive whereas the APS-C lenses would be cheaper. On the other hand I won‘t have a fullframe sensor. Its a very difficult decision to make :(

Outstanding!!! I have the 1Dxii and the Fuji files are as good as the 1Dxii noise, color and DR. I don’t regret getting my Fuji’s (xt2-3). I don’t see any substantial difference between my Canon and my Fuji. People talk a lot of mumbo jumbo about sensor size, but between 35mm equivalent and 1.5 “cropped” the difference is (what would people say) negligible, for a difference I have my Hasselblad, now that’s a sensor. But when you ask me to travel light, to have fun and even for some work, the Fuji is always there! This is the Swiss Army Knife of mirrorless!

Great analysis, I was at Photokina yesterday and Fuji was dominating the crowd interest factor relative to their size in the market. The X-T3 really seems to be a fully baked product. The X-T3 really is one of the first mirrorless cameras that can allow you to ditch your DSLR without compromising. Unlike Canon and Nikon's Rookie Full frames they so hyped. Your customers can't tell its not full frame why bother with the big kit.

I have shot Nikon for 41 years. Still love it and the images I can create with my Nikon camera and lenses. I have added the XT 3 mainly because I wanted to have the mirrorless experience and advantages (not because of image quality) . I chose the Fuji instead of Sony because I really enjoy the experience of shooting with the Fuji... the mobs and dials .... frankly they had me at the aperture ring!!! Good video, good to see you have come over to the bright side :) One comment about the tilty flippy, floppy, wonky screen, if they fold out to the side they are more prone to damage/knocks and also may get in the way of gimbal parts when mounting. I would much prefer an Atomos Ninja V mounted on the gimbal (and then record in 4:2:2 10 bit!). Also it seems that the whole world is complaining about this lack of feature, but its really only KZbinrs, the vast majority are happy without it. Even the new Panasonic camera's don't have a fold out screen and whats more the Panasonic G5S does not have IBIS. Serious videographers don't use IBIS and use separate monitors, it only the casual videographers asking for a fully articulating screen and IBIS, food for thought.

Yep you're right in part. Sensor size does make a difference when dealing with those low light shots and the 5D3 to XP2 would highlight that, BUT... and this is where you're right, if you find your look, then those specs don't or can't stop you working with a camera. It's also how we feel with the box too, and that for you I guess, is making a strong difference. Great to hear from you.

Regarding wireless connecting, on my XT2 and iPhone 8+ the most reliable way I’ve found to use is to do things in this order: 1. Turn on wireless in the camera. 2. On your phone, go to Settings > WiFi and choose your camera’s WiFi network. 3. Once connected, open the Fuji app on your phone. This works for me every time.

neale, i have now watched several of your videos and i love your comfortable, confident, and easy-going approach in your presentation style. simply good stuff, always - well done. regarding the x-t3 it looks simply fantastic - i don't make my "pound notes" with a camera (unfortunately) so an upgrade from my x-t2 and/or x-h1 is not imperative, but i love that fuji continue to push forward and create substantive new products - especially knowing they will continue to refine and improve the product for a long time to come. that focus on the photographer, the dedication to their product, and attention to creating a connection between the photographer and image-making process has created part of what makes up the soulfulness of fuji cameras.

You've nailed it when you suggest that Fujifilm are keen to push ahead constantly. They do seem keen to listen to photographers when they ask for features. Now I am a big fan of Canon in particular, but I don't believe they have listened to photographers on the street when it comes to the new mirrorless solution. I do believe they hamstring their products to a degree as has been suggested. They want us to buy cinema cameras and stills cameras, when Fujifilm and others to be fair, particularly Sony, have pushed forward to squeeze stuff into one box. I am a fan of all the brands pushing mirrorless forward, and I think it can only be good that they grow together.

Well one thing is for sure, Fujifilm do seem to listen to us photographers when we write to them. These are worth sending to them Charbax, though I appreciate your comment here. Interestingly the battery life is much better. I shot a wedding on 5 batteries the last couple of days. In the past, that would have been way more. It has improved. IBIS I guess all comes to down to size of camera, I am told, when I visit their stands and talk to their photographers. Thank you for dropping by.

@@photowalk.podcast battery life may have improved but my opinion is that the batteries are way too small, I bet Sony Z batteries or even the old Panasonic GH batteries have way more capacity. I bet you could have shot that whole wedding on 1-2 Sony batteries comparatively. How many minutes of 4K60 video can you record on a battery? I bet it's way too little. I wish Fuji would redesign the battery for X-H2 to have at least double the capacity.
@armdevicespaid
@armdevicespaid 6 жыл бұрын
@@photowalk.podcast them not including IBIS I think also is a bad excuse for them not spending the required effort and time to redesign how their camera body works compared with X-T2. I bet they could have fitted an IBIS in about the same sized form factor. Or they could have designed a just so slightly larger body to fit that IBIS in there and I bet most customers would have said it would have been worth it. You get much clearer photos and videos when shooting handheld when IBIS is available. IBIS on GH5 is so smooth and amazing, I think every camera should aim at having IBIS at least as good as on the GH5. Even if it's a challenge with larger sensors than micro43, they can do it and they should do it.

I own a A7s iii and A7r iii plus lots of Gmaster lenses. A very large investment but I also own a Fujifilm X100T. I can't fault the quality of the Sony's but the camera I "enjoy" most is the X100T. Size is important and when you travel the last thing you want to carry for a whole day is any Gmaster lens. The only downside for my Fuji travel camera is no 4k ( and don't even say it does 4k at 15 frames a seconds that should have got the advertising standards on to them ). The XT3 is clearly amazing on the 4k front - like you said the shame is the lack of IBIS and the flip out screen - oddly they have it on my X100T but I am still going to get the XT3. Your review, and many many others, all seem to point to it being a real bargain and a lot of fun. Thanks for the great review.

Hey @ourtvchannel thanks for the comment, much appreciated. I've not used the X100T so I'm not familiar with it, though I did very fleetingly look at it for travelling with. Opted in the end for keeping my older X-T2 for those 'don't want to use the main kit' moments. I can live without the IBIS, and boy has shaky footage made a return to much of the doc work I watch and consumer on Netflix or the BBC; I actually think mine looks more than steady enough compared to that field. Flip out screen I'd love to see, and not just for vlogging... it comes in handy for all manner of angles and ideas. I'm hoping that a more easily articulated screen will appear in the future.

Hey Nevin.... welcome to this club. The 5D4 is a super beast, amazing in many ways, but I have to say I'm loving the X-T3, it's given me a new creative lease and in many respects that's down to the weight, plus the fact this I believe is the first in the Fujifilm family where skin tone, quality of skin tone and overall performance is strong enough to make an old Canon dawg like me, turn his head and say; "Well hello new tech."

Hi Neale, I am from Mumbai, India. Most of journey of photographic journey (gear wise) has been similar to yours - Nikon's from the F to DX2s and then a switch over to Canon. Finally a complete switch over to Fuji XT2s in early 2017 - details and results chronicled in the FUJI X-PASSION magazine. However, there have been certain issues with the Fuji X series which the Fuji fanboys and X Ambassadors have never touched upon. Which is sometimes a complete shut down of the camera after it remains in a stand by mode. No amount half-pressing the shutter or toggling the on-off switch would turn on the camera. Intiallly I thought it was a dead battery and a replacement solved the issue. But over time I found that battery juice was not the issue. The only solution was to take out the battery and reinsert it before switching on the camera. Needless to say extremely frustrating in a cinch situation. There is only one instance in KZbin where the photographer changed to Sony system because of this problem, and I believe the problem still persists with the new XT3. Anyway, would like to know if you have encountered this problem before and while you take your new XT3 through its paces, just to keep an eye out on this issue. BTW, I loved your very erudite and literary style of presentation. Absolutely impressed. Regards...

I couldn't tell you how the jpegs are treated by Ian, Cat, or Nick, as they simply allowed me access to their pictures to use. No grading was applied to them in the video edit of course. Personally myself I shoot with the 'standard' profile if working in jpeg and simply pop some contrast. If it's raw, then I have a preset I've built up which actually harks back all the way to when I was shooting with Canon cameras.

Nice Video, amazing. I am a canon user 5d Mark iv, and part-time photographer/filmmaker, I have invested canon glass almost 5 Canon L lenses. I am now looking to 4k film and not happy with canon reason is Crop, no 60fps, and huge file size. I also have Ronin-s which I use for the film. I have used EOS-R and not happy with it as it also has CROP and no smooth 60fps option, I am seriously considering Fuji x-T30 knowing that again I have to buy few Fuji lenses. My daily go-to gear is 2.8 24-70 & 70-200 zoom lens, Ronin-S & Handheld video bites, 5div, low light indoor party film Highlight videos. Max ISO I use 2000 to 2500 with 2.8 lenses, Love touch screen on 5d for focus and almost all my shooting is with Auto Focus. >>> With Xt3 I am not worrying about in-body stabilization or APS-C. Can someone please help me to make my decision: 🙌 Would it be good or this kind of videos? Is XH-1 better for me than Xt3? Is Autofocus god to track subjects in low light? Noise & AF in low light? Any things I need to worry about? Can I use Canon glasses with Adapter if so anyone tried how AF is good with Adapter for video? I understand new firmware improves many things inc Focus. Is it good in video AFocus? Thanks a lot

@photowalk.podcast 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and question. So, I'm not a paid up Fujifilm ambassador, so I can answer your questions with integrity and honesty, even though I have swapped systems. So, first up, high ISO. Canon in film mode, may well be a tad better. Of course, it all comes down to grading. But I think Canon edges there. I know nothing about the EOS-R and haven't had a chance to use one yet, so I can't comment on that score. The touch screen for focus and staying with the person you select is still better in Canon too. I prefer the XT3 over the XH1, for ergonomics mainly. I have two XT3 bodies and whilst the XH1 is a super camera for film work, the overall specs of the XT3 excite me more. Autofocus on the XT3 is good and better with every firmware update it seems. I can't comment on the Canon glass adaptor, since I sold all my Canon glass and have never tried the adaptor route. I would say though that proprietary glass is always the best way to go. And Fuji's glass is really super. I've been very happy with those results.

This is a really nice review of the mirrorless revolution and the APS-C revolution, by someone in the trenches. It certainly agrees with my experiences, except for the fact that the video never seems to mention that there arer other manufacturers of mirrorless APS-C cameras. There is a small company called Panasonic and another company-who-shall-not-be-named (rhymes with Slytherin and Sauron). Both companies had an effect on the revolution, sharing many of the heartaches and triumphs with the great Fujifilm. People not completely in the Fujifilm tribe can be assured that Neale's story largely applies to them too. So, again, thanks for a rather riveting chronologue of this journey over the past five years. I would also like to offer a suggestion that might help you in some areas you say that you find important. I can certainly appreciate that proper skin tones are vital to a wedding photographers, even when the ambient lighting varies. So why, oh why, would you ever shoot in JPEG, other than for backup? Your camera collects about 12 bits of information about the skin tones it observes. The camera's computer chip then uses the equivalent of Phase One or Lightroom's automatic development option to build an 8-bit rendering. This throws away well over 90% of the color information, so you have to hope that the chip got the skin tones right. I still think that good photographers, especially armed with color patch panels and artistic color toning schemes, can do a lot better. So, if you are a commercial wedding photographer and have spent thousands on fancy equipment, it makes sense to buy a color patch panel for $150 and start with a neutral color toning. After that, there are thousands of plug-in color toning schemes, including ones that replicate the much beloved Velvia film color profile.

Enjoyed the video. I've been shooting Fujifilm now for for a few years, going back to when the X-E1 came out. Currently trying to make up my mind between the X-Pro2 (I have the 1 and an X100T) or the X-T3. Being strictly an amateur who shoots mostly street, a lot of the things in the X-T3 that are important to your wedding photography, aren't as big a deal for me. That said, I do worry about AF on the X-Pro2. I shoot mostly MF and zone focusing on the X-Pro1 and X100T simply because I don't trust the AF to get it right, nor keep up with me. I actually ended up using manual M mount Voigtlanders on the X-Pro1, instead of Fujifilm lenses, for this reason. The X100T rarely sees the lever on AF. How did you find AF performance X-Pro2 vs. X-T3? Some of your wedding situations are going to be like my street ones, so in that respect, your experience with the two cameras will be of value. @@photowalk.podcast Thanks, I'll be watching for the podcast. The X-Pro2 rangefinder format appeals to me more than the faux SLR layout of the X-T3, but I'll buy the X-T3 if the AF difference is significant. I'd love a camera that had a good AF bias toward foreground subjects, especially if it worked quickly. I also have an X-T10 which focuses reasonably quickly if I leave things like Face Detection off and only use AF-S. As soon as I begin turning on anything related to capturing motion, the AF performance bogs down. Since I'm often moving as well as the subject, as you can imagine, using only AF-S leaves me with a few misses, but it's the price I have to pay to have a camera that doesn't grind away when I try to trip the shutter.

seem to remember one Ken Rockwell, waxing lyrical over fuji skin tones (but not overall color balance). generally, any color bias is a bad thing as many people photograph a wide range of subjects in jpeg. xt3 is worth considering, maybe, but a FF system at a similar cost, is more tempting, even if pre-owned, imo.- in marginal light/backlit situations, which provide interesting, atmospheric shots. sidewise, Sony a7 system is comparable.

Hi Allan, thanks for the thoughtful response to the film. I would agree that the full frame for me when photographing weddings may still take a lead in those marginally lit and backlit situ as you suggest, but not to the degree where I can no longer consider it possible to work with a smaller mirrorless. Price pointing is a strong pull for me too. And travel, well, don't get me started on just how much more I do with the cameras now I'm travelling light. But you make very valid points though.

Hello dear friend. Thanks for the great video. Man has my xt-10 but I also wanted to buy fuji, but now I’m not sure, the fact is that I’m a budding photographer and the trouble is that if you start then people don’t look at your work but at your camera when you come to them taking pictures they think that you have some kind of amateur photo partner when I’m with my xt-10 and don’t treat you seriously and they don’t even have a desire to ask you about a photographer, but can I look at your work? but they think about you that this is some kind of not serious guy and, in general, he takes pictures on a bar of soap, this is how people with fuji perceive us and it doesn’t give me any work. Yes, when you have a name and you are a cool photographer, people hire you because of your work and they are all exactly on what they are filming there. when I’m fuji people think about me that this guy is just a guy who fotkaet for instagram and no one is interested in me. and this stupidity of people spoils all desire to start with Fuji cameras

Hi Alex, and thanks for your comment. I photograph using Fujifilm all the time now, and not once have a run into the problem of people sneering at me because of a camera size. I wouldn't worry about it. I'd carry on doing what you're doing and let the work speak for itself. Sony cameras are pretty much the same size as say an XH1 and XT body... and I've never read a thread where a Sony photographer worries about the smaller size of camera. Granted, their glass size is larger, but think of it this way; over the course of time, so of the most iconic and important images have been made with small cameras like the Leica, with smaller glass on the front. Don't worry about what others say or think. Make your own art and be comfortable in your own shoes. Your work will speak for itself. Good luck :-)

So if it's speed of focus you want, the 23mm F2 every time. The 1.4 labours and hunts a little from time to time, though I can't help thinking the images are somewhat more lively from the latter lens. I have the 35mm F2 and just don't use it, in fact I should probably let it go as it's sat in a cupboard right now behind paper clip bottles and other bobs of stationery. The 1.4 is not a lens you choose for speed of focus, so if it's quick street work or similar I would deffo opt for the F2.

Thanks David, appreciate your time. It's a leap for many people, myself included, when you make the final swap from something you're very familiar with, but it soon becomes something second nature again.

Great review really enjoyed this I shoot canon at work and Nikon at home until the first x100 which became my travel cam I loved and hated it in equal measure then moved to the x100t which I loved then drown in a tragic accident currently I use the x100f which amazes me every shot. I shoot stills for my channel almost exclusively with the F it's a beast BUT I do like the sound of the xt3 😏 top watch this mate happy to sub you 👍🏼

If you look at dpreviews iso chart the x-t3 looks to have more noise at high iso than the x-t2 and X-H1...

I saw that yes... can't say I have found that myself. I don't really really pixel peep, but I seriously haven't found that. Interestingly I was shooting a wedding today where the bride's father ironically is involved in chip and sensor projects, and he explained exactly how the sensor in the X-T3 works... far better than I did... it does sound like a really exciting development. Fujifilm and Sony and other camera brands all working toward these improvements will only help us all achieve the standards we'd love to work with. 10 years ago remember, we were happy to work with 2.8 lenses and 1600 max ISOs... it seems to be moving at a million miles an hour!

Hi Cody, I'm no sports shooter, so I am not the best to ask. The equiv lens from Fujinon is the 50-140 and it's a crisp lens, no doubt. I've used it and did some stuff at a vintage racer meet a while back. Seemed to work well for me, albeit the cars were moving far less swiftly. Focus on the X-T3 is lightning quick compared to where we were, IMHO. I'm finding focus to be sharper for me right now for wedding work, and I was a committed 5Div shooter since introduction. Can you hire one and a 50-140?

Ricardo T. M. Hi there. So the bag is 2x XT3, 1x XH1 (an addition for any filming). Lenses: 16, 23, 56 and 10-24. I do have other lenses but those are the ones I favour and carry constantly. :-)

Neale, i know i am late to the party, but would you share how you edit your photos. It would be super valuable info. I am a7R3 shooter, wedding one, but i find myself in time consuming sessions, editing & editing... Yes, i rarely miss focus, but still. May be that is the reason to look towards Fuji.

Thanks for your message. I've always shied from doing a 'how to edit photos' film, mainly because of the flack you get from the pixel peepers when you do those kinds of things. I have however been thinking of making one that deals with black and white if that would be of any help? I'm interested though, why would you want to swap if you rarely miss focus? What's your reasoning behind wanting to make that move? Is it the feeling of the camera in your hand... etc?

@@photowalk.podcast Hey there. Personally i am kind of a person who sees something, understands it and may be tries it myself, with my own curve and i think there are more people like me, learning from example. Thats why i think it might be useful. I've seen many story-telling, composition-wonderful photos(per my opinion) and many has been bad edited. Regarding the X-T3 shift (or adding it) it first reason - might be a GAS, i guess. The R3 failed me only once for 1 year, during a wedding (i shot may be 15). It could't focus at all, but after a 6 seconds restart, all was fine. Second reason - I've played extensively for 2 weeks with x-t1 and 32 1.8 zeiss. I liked the combo - light, funny to use, gets me even more creative (may be a salt of marketing working in my head). And it was everywhere with me.

Funny, but I started to form some plans for an edit video last night... it wouldn't be exceptionally long, as I'm a very basic editor. (Perhaps another reason for shying from them.) As for the swap reason, it sounds to me like you've been thinking hard about the camera. You've paired it with a lens that's not 'standard,' so you've clearly been doing some homework and having enjoyment using it. ;-)

Fuji must be paying for this ad, it's been showing in my feed for many days. Not convinced a crop is on the same level as FF, shot with crop too long.

Nope. I can't say that are or would. They have far higher people up the chain than me when it comes to views, an ambassadorial scheme and so on. There is some traction generally around the subject, hence the appearance I guess. I've not heard one thing from Fujifilm, honest guvnor (as they say here in the UK). I hear what you mean about crop v FF... but this wasn't really a crop v FF film... it was more about the feelings of using a camera. I'm equally looking forward in the next couple of years to picking up Canon's offerings and seeing what they have produced. Thank you for dropping by.

Very interesting to see. What I love about fuji is 60p in 4K. For wedding job You simply must have it and this is according to me the main reason why people (especially wedding movie makers) will switch very fast. Canon had no choice because implementing 60p would destroy the pro segment of c200. I wonder how long they will be able to follow this strategy of protecting other product lines. Coming back to the topic, being a canon system user for many years, the 4k60p and price is the only highlight for me if I compare this camera with EOS R. EOS R has much better dual pixel AF, for sure better colours out of the box, c-log, better screen and the new lenses are very good.

It's been a while I know since your comments. I think the systems, certainly the X-H2s that I now use have brought the cameras closer together. I would agree that Canon colour, is still very much a benchmark.

great vid, i'm due a XT3 next week, can I get rid of my Canon kit??? it's coming i'm sure, like you my Canon comes out for portrait work, but the Fuji is my travel camera, I just need to get my head over the Non full frame, after spending so long lusting after full frame.

Thanks Russ. It is a journey for sure. The FF thing is something that still wanders round my conscience - but the more I use this as my only system, the more I find how strong and fun it is. As I say, there are those that just live to loathe this brand, and that will drag you down too. Try not to embrace that noise, though do take note of the more constructive stuff, of which there is some out there. Good to meet you.

I switched from Nikon and canon to Olympus a while back (em1 mk ii) with a range of its pro lenses. Love it but want to do more video shoot and get even better performance. Been watching and thinking about Fuji. The xh1 did not convince me enough. The xt3 neither as want ibis and use the fully articulated screen a lot so not willing to sacrifice that. Waiting to see if Fuji includes those in next upgrades to make it worthwhile adding to my Olympus or even switching.

Just jumped ship from Canon after a decade to the new X-T3 myself. There's a learning curve from Canon's simple menu interface, but OH the things the X-T3 can do. The lenses are far sharper from what I've seen so far. Not looking back.

Im also a wedding photographer, normally shoot with two cameras, a 35mm on one and 85mm/135mm on the other. As Canon has been such dicks the last few years, I dipped my toe into Fuji with an X100F. I shot a wedding anniversary switching long lenses on my Canon and the X100F on the side for wider shots. I have to say the images were amazing. However in the church the Canon images were considerably cleaner and like you say the skin tones were more natural. Not to mention my Canon battery dropped 1 bar at the end of the day, the fuji was dead before after breakfast. I can't say I'll be switching just yet. Maybe the new sensor changes things. Also, I will find it hard to let go of the Canon 135mm F2, thats lens has magic inside it.
