It sounds to me, whoever painted your bumper and bonnet have used a cheap clear coat, or not mixed it right or put too much product on. BMW paintwork product is usually by a German company called Glasurit. I’ve used this product a lot and it’s a hs+ (High Solid) If the paint work has not been baked off at the correct temperature and time, the paint could take a very long time to cure, plus have you checked the micron thickness Of the paint. One should be around 90-120 microns thick. So here in Australia, even when we bake a car. It can still take around 72hrs to cure at outside temperature 30 degrees. Try the nail test, if you can still dig your finger nail into the paint the chances are it will need to be repainted at the right oem. Hope that helps Scott

Did the same on an Audi A5 with black non metallic paint. Bloody car haunts me still. The amount of work I did and getting the light bulb to fire off too late in the game was not helpful...old age! Anyway its a lesson learnt and glad it was my car and not a customers as I would defo be out of pocket...Nice work Jon! The red really really pops.

I once had a Ford Fusion that had the trunk lid repainted of which I was totally unaware. I had done my test section on another panel and had polished several doors and the hood (bonnet for you Brits ☺) to great success but when I got the rear deck lid, there seemed to be quite apparent scratches that just wouldn't change no matter how much I buffed or compound/pad combination I used. Took me a minute to realize that it wasn't on the surface as that was beautifully polished. Rather it was sanding marks that had not been taken out prior to the base coat and clear being applied that looked like surface scratches, Glad I didn't go through the clear trying to get them. haha

Another great video. This video is very relevant to me because my vehicle has just had respray on some of the panels. I have been advised to wait 2 weeks before machine polishing the new paint. I will use a finishing polish with a soft pad rather than going at it too hard. Thanks Jon.

I had my Lexus resprayed a few years ago, it’s a reasonably good job but it’s solid black so shows every mark, and it’s quite soft. A near 17ft black car with soft paint It looks great but it’s anxiety inducing when washing it. Polishing it can be fun aswell... Damn thing I feel your pain

I had watched the full video before commenting, and my thoughts were was that the marring was on the new paint, under the new clear coat. Which meant you need to remove the new clear coat to get to the marring. Glad I was wrong. With your hair, it is au natural, as you don't go and have makeup/hair done before videoing.

The mad scientist LOL. Sorry Jon! Caught your trouble when you said that you did the fenders wings and where going to be doing the bonnet next. But nah changed my mind but then it got obviuos for me. Not something that you always think of though. And when you polishing a great repaint where you have not noticed it first can take some time to catch what happens. Also the importance of inspection light it up when you start on a new panel is a good thing to do. I was doing a test spot on my bonnet a couple of weeks ago to find the combo. Soft Kia paint and even if it looks quite good good I have some deeper defects that I thought to level down to. B&S Uro-Fiber pad and Sonax Cutmax was almost getting them and I don't want to get any more aggressive than that. And under the Scangrip Sunmatch light it looked great on my silver metallic paint. Still I tested just for fun with the Sonax Pen Light and what do you know it showed micro marring under that light LOL. No problem to polishing those out though. But I and many more would say it where LSP ready after the first step. Lighter colors and especially when you have a lot of the metallic flakes in your paint can be a trouble to show you the right results. The sun would probebly show it for me when I was done with the LSP LOL. Awesome reminder you gave us Jon. Have you thought about useing the DAS6 Pro you have? The forced rotation can be a PITA on soft finicky paints. Some even go up to a stiff pad and a fine finishing polish as it's something with the pad movement. The last is mostly on the sticky paints where you want to keep the heat build up at the lowest possible and getting that with the more air in a more coarse foam pad. The abrasives can play a part in this too. Sonax Perfect Finish or Carpro Reflect and even Carpro Essence is some I use on very soft paints. Combo them with the Rupes Yellow Foam Pad vs the white pad from them is usually getting a great finish. If you have the Optimum Hyper Polish the one in the sprayer bottle I have heard works great on softer paints with the Rupes Yellow Foam Pad.

In the ds4 we practised in the course in Poland I did the left side of the car and the same thing happend to me on both doors so I had to use a medium cutting pad and medium polish to fix that. After the course I helped polishing a Volvo V40 and Volvo also has a very hard clear coat. I am polishing my friends Smart Fortwo but im not seeing any difference at all. I need to change something and I think I have to increase the speed and do slower passes. Its all about practice. Lol.

I guessed that you were marring the paint. And when you have lots of defects on very soft paint it usually means 3-steps :/ I just did soft c6 corvette and had to to do multiple sets with woolpad and koch chemie h9 and then two refining steps. Took me damn 50 hours and i am a part-time detailer. Did it weekend lol.

Hi I'm a 67 year old newb, looking to get a polisher and came across your great video. I have a car, a DeLorean that has no paintwork, but it has plastic (unpainted) front and rear fascias. I believe that they are black Urethane. I've had great results using wet n dry by hand working up to 3000 grade, but feel that good polisher will yield results. Would a machine with a big throw be good for urethane unpainted plastic? Also what liquid n pads would you use . Love your you tube channel. Thank you.

Sounds like I was lucky, but I didn’t know how abrasive scholl s20 was, but did the whole car new bonnet respray but it turned ok on my Jag XF. This is the first time I have dabbled with my DA, as I had to polish out a scratch from a thick branch the whole length of the car, I can’t see any swirls and it seems fine. I used v34 to polish the scratch out and got a lot of product throw initially, then rechecked your vid to find out I wasn’t dabbing the pad before turning it on .... Duh. But this has educated me further thanks.

You presented it so convoluted that I first thought it was something really tricky, like you carried over some abraded paint residue particles from the OEM paint to the repainted area in the pads (either by using the same pad on both kind of panels or even just possibly going over the edges slightly), and that's what marred the latter, because it was harder. But then I saw you had multiple pads soaking, so, I figured it wasn't that. Then it turned out to be really a basic thing. :)

I thought it would be softer paint! Something I have discovered recently is BMW paint is becoming less and less hard and it is getting thinner and thinner. I recently worked on a 19 plated 2018 manufactured 3 series and 69 plate x5, and both were soft enough to inflict marring with various pad types using koch chemie f6.01. They were both showing frequent readings of 80-90 microns across large areas too. Last year I experienced paint so poor on a BMW X1 that the paint detective coating thickness gauge was leaving indentations in the paint on the contact needle and even from the "foot" that surrounds it. I even managed to make a finger print with enough pressure. It was returned to BMW after even water polishing on a glazing pad left machine marring. This may explain the difference in hardness if it has been painted with BMW supplied paint. Regardless, do keep an eye out because it nearly caught me out! Robin @ Autobrite Direct /Viking Detail

The panel got too hot. Keep the temperature down. Light passes with low rpms and a softer pad will jewel polish the paint.

Machine polishing a aftermarket spray job...never factory and never know the thickness of the clear coat....no depth gauge will ever tell you but if it's all factory and never been machined at least you have an idea how far you can go.

Jon i love using a 1 step product that has good cut, and then if i really want ultra shine, ill use a finishing polish very quickly after...but i usually dont have the time so i just use a really good 1 step and then a finishing polish/glaze for that really nice finish....

I had same kind of problem with Toyota RAV 4 2017. And whats more unusual is that the paint thickness is 0.9 on OEM. Its like 10times thinner or what the h... Solve me this? What i have painted cars. I know this if you but too much a part or b part the end result is not what manufacturer is mented. So if you trust your painter then theres should not be problem. But if not they might mixed it wrong.

One thing to ask, you did mention that you would remove the machine holograms with soft finishing pad with finishing polish with very small sections with no pressure. What would be the least aggressive method you would have opted for, like soft japanese paints, when the paint is full of swirls n scratches n holograms??

Ultra soft pads are not the best for delicate paint. Rupes yellow pad works great.

Most Asian cars are soft clear coats and on most new cars the clear coat is getting thinner so we have a lot less to work with, yet the prices have gone up

Question: how long was the new paint on before you started compounding/polishing it? If the shop used a good quality clear, it will become just as rock hard as the original, but depending on lots of variables, it may take between 30 to 90 days before it gets there. In the first 30 days, often a DA with a medium pad & compound is enough to get a perfect finish, as the clear is still relatively "soft". And - you probably know this, but for other's sake maybe - do not put on a wax or sealant on until you are sure it's perfectly cured. (there are 2 exceptions, but that would lead us too far). Source: one of the guys who developped the 2 stage automotive paint. On the other hand: I tried "correcting" my resprayed car after 40 days with S3 and a Scholl heavy cut Spider pad. 5 passes. Zero result. Clear is absolutely rock hard. Painter stood next to me and was laughing his ass off. "Told ya!" It was either using 3000 grit or go round with a medium combination, then Gyeon Prime, then start the coating process. Edit: 3 weeks, OK, so yeah, still pretty soft at that point. Edit2: also depends on hardener/reducer/cabin temp/baking temp&time, so talking about ideal world

yer its more like a month I think.. I literally just left it sitting outside in the cold with no product on it. Its very soft though. this needed very soft pads. finishing pads with SF3500 was like the best way to correct this paint (or any finishing polishing)

@@ForensicDetailing It's finnicky isn't it? It might well have been different if this happened 3 months ago during the hot July/August months. I did some small rattlecan action then, and it was dry to the touch after 2 hours. Tried the same in October (same product/technique/person) and 24 hours later I ruined it just by touching it. 2K clear apparently needs 20°C minimum to do its thing. Anyway, great video, you could always expand on it later; detailing can catch you out on new paint/spot repairs/resprays.

no, you can do if you want to though.. you will hear people with 400 years of first hand paintwork experience tell you that you should. the bodyshops mop them after they lay the paint down though. I like to just leave the car for a month. dont wash it, dont touch it.. just have the paint sitting there.. then wash it and polish it, and protect it.

Hi may I ask the following. I bought a new in 2Detailing DA8 900W Dual Action Machine Polisher and found that over time it's just very noisy. In your testing of DA polishers is this unit particularly noisy to you, only the manufacturers say that's how they are. But frankly I just don't buy this. Kind regards Dave Porter London

The bonnet looks darker than the wing. Could just be the lighting and viewing angle.
