First of all, compliments that you have chosen the "drei Mühlen". I live right across the street (you even filmed my entrance to the courtyard) I've been living here for almost 20 years and the drei Mühlen, even for me as a Bavarian a stunner. I often and mostly eat the delicious roast pork with beer sauce and coleslaw. Unfortunately, you forgot one important point! The quality of the meat, from the best butcher in town. Magnus Bauch, just around the corner. He is one of the best butchers in Germany and I mean that literally! It is a good sign, if you come there on saturday morning around 6:30 am and you see the fire brigade, the paramedics and the police geting the Weißwürst ther colleagues on duty for a Weißwurst breakfast. Sometimes they are in the second row. By the way i`m not getting paid to say this. I just love it. Keep up the work Matthias from Reifensuelstr 8

I can’t believe I accidentally ended up at the Wirtshaus in der Au tonight! I just arrived in Munich and my NYE reservations fell through. The concierge made a call and said go to this restaurant. As I arrived I realized….holy poo…I am at that restaurant that I just saw Near from home talking about. The food was amazing and I am planning on a returning before I leave. Actually…I am now on a mission to go to ever restaurant you recommend here. Thank you so much for making this video.

Hello Near From Home, It is a pleasure to meet you both. I've been enjoying your videos of Munich food and transportation. I'm traveling to Munich next week to meet my husband during his business trip and to enjoy my first Octoberfest. We'll be staying at the Four Points by Sheraton Munich Arabellapark. I'm looking forward to exploring the city and its neighborhoods with your suggestions of great places to stop for beer or food. As a professional chef and baker, my favorite way to learn about the culture of a place is to spend time walking through the neighborhoods away from the tourist areas and asking the locals and shop owners what they suggest. Thank you so much for the work you all put into your videos. I'm a new subscriber to your channel!

Great video! One really unique thing is that you showed the charm of the neighborhoods, I would have never known how great Au-Haidhausen was. Definitely would love to see more of these and keep showing off the great city that is Munich. Interestingly, my family always refers to Munich as the Millionendorf, which essentially means a village of a million people. You could be in Altstadt and never know you are in such a large city!

I am sooooooo sooooo thankful! Finally somebody who recommends skipping the Hofbräuhaus, which is only loud and touristy. And somebody who does not call the Maß a "Stein". Since there are actual "Steinkrüge" :-) There is also another very nice beergarden between Neuhausen, Gern, Nymphenburg, the Taxisgarten.
@NearFromHome3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! 🥰 Those things really bother us too. We’re really trying to integrate hahahaha.
@j54island2 жыл бұрын
Only problem with skipping HB is you miss out on the history and culture that makes Bavaria, Bavaria. It is having a bier fest every night of the year. It also has a sweet restaurant on the 1st floor and an amazing festival hall on the second floor. It is a major historical part of the Bavarian empire. Not to mention some pretty amazing food upstairs from the beer hall.
@aperturix2 жыл бұрын
@@j54island Well, talking about history. On February 20, 1920, Hitler's party, the NSDAP, was founded in the Hofbräuhaus. In the course of the Munich bombing in 1945 the whole building was totally destroyed. Reconstruction from scratch was finished in 1958. So I think it's pretty decent to skip the place which is not even the real thing. Also I was driven out of the Hofbräuhaus by the noise and the stink seconds after I literally poked my nose into the place.
@LeskeHomes11 ай бұрын
I'm not on the Hofbräuhaus hate bandwagon. I've had several memorable experiences there over the years that I do not regret. It is indeed too touristy but it's one of those tourist places you should experience at least once, preferably not during the peak hours or season. I'm kind of glad that Ben & Camille do not cover it as I can find enough info about it all over KZbin. I'm always looking for hidden gems and HB is not one of those, so I'll keep watching NFH for more insider tips.

The best of bavarian self service beer garden culture is the fact that you are allowed to bring your own food. You can prepare what ever you like at home and consume it in the Biergarten as long as you buy your drinks (beer) there. The ultimate local tip: go to the Viktualienmarkt buy great food specialities at the surrounding market shops and then sit down in the adjacent beer garden and eat & drink like a bavarian king for relatively little money...

@@NearFromHome Did you know that Haidhausen actually used to be called "Glassscherbenviertel" ("Brokenglassquarter") and "Franzosenviertel" ("Frenchquarter")? When I moved there in 1974, mostly students, workers and "Guestworkers" (from Italy, Turkey and Greece) lived there. Living space was still very cheap. I shared a 5-room apartment (at Wörthstrasse), with 4 more people, so it was very affordable. There were plenty of Turkish, Greek, Italian and French restaurants. All my friends lived there and after work, we met mostly in one Greek restaurant, "Kytaros", near Wiener Platz, and talked, ate, had Greek wine, and....danced (there was always Greek live music) until 2AM in the morning. During the summer almost daily. We spent more time in their beer garden than at work. Talking about "Life-Work Balance:, ha, ha. Best time of my life. Truly.

Great job on the video. We’ll be traveling to Munich in mid September and I noticed that there were quite a few wasps at the Biergarten you visited. My kids and I are near phobic of wasps and I’m wondering just how bad they are at that time of year. I did some research and it sounds like they can get out of hand in August and September. We might need to try the Biergartens in the evening after they’ve gone back home. What are your thoughts?
@NearFromHome2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, yeah I suppose now that you mention it there were a lot of wasps. So you might want to be a little prepared. I would say that you don’t need to worry too much as they aren’t particularly aggressive, but that’s not really very helpful. I’m deathly afraid of snakes, and telling me that snakes are nice doesn’t really help. So what I will say is maybe go to busier beer gardens, or simply beer halls. Are you hoping to come for Oktoberfest? Because if so you won’t need to worry about wasps there :)

Thank you for the great insider's guide. I am planning a trip for September and Munich will be my home base for five days. I think I know which food video you referenced because I just watched that one too. We're looking for semi-touristy eats to get the feel of Bavaria without the crowds. Big fan of your cat cameo as well. It's going to be hard to be away from my two kitties for ten days.
@NearFromHome2 жыл бұрын
Thank so much! I think these three restaurants sound like what your looking for! I would also recommend Zum Kloster, also in Haidhausen . We wanted to feature it in this video, but it would have been too long. Glad you appreciate a good cat cameo. If you watch some of our other videos, maybe you'll see the other two. lol
@alyxandrasherwood11762 жыл бұрын
The last restaurant with the three types of schnitzel is definitely on my list! Your video on navigating the German ticketing system has already been extremely helpful. I feel confident that I can navigate to Zugspitze and other day trips without the need of a tour guide. I'll try to spot your kitties in other videos.

Watching all your vids in preparation for a Bavaria trip in June. Can't wait to try these places out (schnitzel every day!). Any pointers for good district for hotels (Munich, not too touristy)?
@NearFromHome2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Most of the hotels I know of are in quite touristy areas, as in near the train station and in the Altstadt. I would go with a hotel in the Altstadt, as it is touristy, but aesthetic, as opposed to near the main train station, which is noisy and a little seedy. My favorite locals' neighborhoods are: Maxvorstadt, Schwabing, Schwanhahlerhöhe, Haidhausen, and Glockenbachviertel. Maybe there are some nice Air B&Bs there?

Schnitzel can be had in bavaria and good ones too but its really an austrian dish. There are only 2 options for a side dish. Its either parsley potatoes or potato salad. A chips option doesnt really exist. Its just much cheaper and easier to buy chips and fry them than peeling potatoes so in bavaria many restaurants offer it but less so in austria. You also always get a sort of cranberry sauce which often times isnt homemade and is usually too sweet but it fits really well if you happen to get lucky with a homemade one. Also gravy is a big nono on breaded schnitzels. If you think the meat is too dry without it then you should probably try a different restaurant.
@NearFromHome Жыл бұрын
Are you Austrian? I get this comment a lot ;) but I’ll tell you what. Drei Mühlen Schnitzel with the mushroom gravy, it’s the best I’ve ever had. Which from this channel’s receipts alone, you can tell it wasn’t my first rodeo with the Schnitzel. I do hope you subscribe and stick around though. I’ve got another food tour in Heidelberg coming up and they served their schnitzel with a beer gravy!!

@@NearFromHome Im actually bavarian and Ive lived not in but close to munich for 25 years total and Im living there right now. But Ive lived in several places in bavaria including Würzburg and Garmisch. And even though Im a proud bavarian I have to admit that we cant really hold a candle to Austria when it comes to Schnitzel. Of course everybody can eat what they want but I personally dont understand chips as a side dish in general. There are so many better things to make out of potatoes :D

We will be visiting Munich for four to five days next May. Neither of us drink. Will that be weird to be in a beer garden? Your other videos have given us plenty of great options for day trips. Keep up the good work and share more about Munich itself.
@NearFromHome3 жыл бұрын
No worries. People aren’t pushy and mostly keep to themselves. Your drink of choice, though maybe upon a very close inspection will look a bit of an odd one out, is perfectly fine and no one will be looking that closely or judging :) perhaps during Oktoberfest I’d recommend non-beer drinkers give the gardens a skip, lol, but nah don’t worry.

Don't worry! I live here and don't drink either but I still love going to the beergarden. You can drink our typical Spezi or sparkling apple juice.

Zero problemo! Every Munich brewery and Biergarten offers alcohol-free beer, though in some places you may need to ask for it. You’ll fit right in. I find the alkoholfrei Weißbier rather tasty.

I've tried all of the Big 6 Munich breweries beer. I'm personally most fond of Augustinerbraeu Helles. I've probably drunk more Hofbraeu or Spaten, but only because they are available here in the States. Another of my faves is Kloster Andechs Hell. I haven't yet found a local source of Augustiner Hell.

Aus österreichischer Sicht ist, "Schnitzel mit Soße", ein Sakrileg! Das Schnitzel muss knusprig sein. Mit Soße ist das Schnitzel pampig.

Well, my feedback is that I looked up recipes for vegane Semmelknödeln and vegane Sellerie Schnitzel So as a food tour it was great it inspired me. My experience of Munich eating was finding a vegan restaurant that served something other than american style burgers which sadly seems to be the trendy thing. I would be interested in you and your wife exploring ethnic restaurants in Munich as a tour idea.
@NearFromHome3 жыл бұрын
That has been our experience with vegan and vegetarian restaurants as well. 😓 Honestly, I've found the non-Bavarian food scene to be really lacking, but we have managed to find a couple of good foreign restaurants.

Big fan of the Münchner Schnitzel, although, as a classic nitpick, to my understanding that's sweet / Bavarian mustard and horseradish. So that'd actually be the Drei Mühlen Schnitzel on that menu ...
