When I saw this news, I started to investigate why Puerto Rico's electrical system is failing so much, something that had never happened before. The company that manages the distribution of electricity and the one that is failing so much is a North American company, with North American managers, and even the field employees are hired here, in North America, and it is since this company (LUMA) took control of the distribution of electricity that these blackouts are occurring. This company (LUMA) took control about 4 years ago, and since then these blackouts have been constant. While the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (AEE) owned by the government of Puerto Rico managed the country's electricity distribution for more than 80 years, this did not occur.

If they are a territory that belongs to the US the US needs to make their electricity work all the DAM time since when are you allowed to have a territory of something and not take care of the electricity and the people that live there, this is how screwed up this country is ….. Puerto Rico , are you US citizen who is self-employed in a US territory must pay self-employment tax on a net self-employment earnings of $400 or more therefore we should give them the goddamn electricity we should be taking care of them. It shows you how f-ed up this country is……

Problem is Puerto Ricans that work the power grid over the decades wasted time and money . I met a top consultant and he went on and on how Puerto Rican employees hired their friends and family who did nothing and hired incompetent people that didn’t do what they were supposed to . Sub stations built in flood zones . Faulty workmanship. It’s terrible workmanship across the grid

Most folks in PR are college educated. Even a manager in a McDonalds usually has a degree in business. It’s a sad reality. I have two cousins that are geniuses and were in college by age 13. The one that moved here to the states, is a millionaire, and the one who stayed behind, works high level factory jobs with two masters in two different sub categories in engineering, and a PHD in research. While his positions are ‘high-level,’ they’re still factory jobs. Unless he moves here and then returns to PR already employed by an American or multinational company, that’s the furthest he will ever get. But, he loves his country and does not want to leave. I left and I’m doing well without a degree. I make more money than him. US has exploited us for 126 years. We have tried to become a state and they won’t allow it. EVERY plebiscite has the same outcome with most islanders wanting to become a state. The law we’re under (Jones Law & Foraker Act) legally should’ve given us independence or allowed our union. They have done neither. Leaving us in a limbo status as all occupations tend to do before pulling out once we have nothing to exploit.
