It's telling the demons suddenly became active 29 years ago, as thats when Himmel died. Man was such a hero that even as an old man Demons avoided activity till after he died. Himmel really is him

Though I feel like it was more than that considering they said Aura's powers RECOVERED around the same time he died. Sounded more like a seal to me. Need to read the novels someday to find out.

@@wiredrayne Pretty sure that's just how it appeared to most people that were not aware that Himmel died that year : for most human, he would just be a legend, they wouldn't really follow his state or even know he was still alive at the time. But demons (at least the big bosses) would remember Himmel, still be afraid of him and completely willing to wait for his inevitable end. So Himmel die and people who don't know that see a lot of previously recluse demons suddenly making big moves ? No wonder they think they "regained" their power at this time.

In this world demons are creatures of magic and magic is the art of imagined possibility. Himmel struck such fear into demons that they subconsciously reject the possibility that they can achieve anything while he still lives.

Some says Fern's quickdraw is related to when she was training while racing against the time before Heiter passed away, cuz she needed to fire her spell faster to train more in much shorter time. And I think that actually makes sense.

It's use has become instinctual muscle memory to her since it is all she has ever known. Even a mage that has had the time and commitment to master a handful of offensive spells won't be quite as fast because there is that fraction of a second where they must consider which spell is best for the situation.

10:00 Exactly 29 years ago the demon activity started again. I want to imagine a demon boss waiting patiently and the underlings insisting: "Come on, boss, Himmel the hero is like 94! He is just an old bloke by now!" And the boss is like "You haven't seen him. I ain't going to risk it". Even at the very last stage of his life, Himmel still instilled terror in the hearts of demons.

I really love Wirbel, he really feels like that "common protag" in most fantasy stories but he has a lot of depth to him actually. You first think he is a typical murder hobo but he truly has a heart of gold even throughout all the killing hes had to do.

I really like how indeed magic is connected to the person who wield it and his personality. For example Whirbel is not natural born killer, he has a binding spell to procrastinate killing. Since he is not such he could not spot Fern's bluff. But the crazy sociopath who has cutting magic could tell Fern's bluff right away.

Fern turned 18 in episode 14. Stark mentioned in episode 7 that he's only a few months older than her and his 18th birthday was in episode 12. In episode 17, Frieren says Fern will be a full fledged adult in 2 years, so I guess in their universe, a 20yo is considered a full fledged adult.

This was the same thing we have here in Japan.. 20 years old is considered adult or 社会人 and be part of the shakai. Everyone is given these ceremonies every January and yeah we all look forward to it, since it's the time we can all legally drink Alcohol.

Denken is the only one there for who Frieren isn't some distant tale written about in books and shown in old statues. He was born around the time they defeated the Demon King so he would have grown up hearing all sorts of heroic tales of the hero party and Frieren herself from people who were around when it happened. By now it's been like 80 years since that happened so most of the people who were alive to see them are probably dead. It's like growing up now reading about the World Wars, it doesn't seem real and the amount of people left who have first hand experience of the events is diminishing fast.

I like the magic exam arc, but I have to say I enjoy more the other arcs in Frieren. That said, the character building in this arc, with all these new characters is amazing. I'd say Denken is my favorite character among those we meet during this magic exam story, but all of them are really interesting.

You can see from this episode how magic has evolved among the humans. While older mages like Denken and mages active in combat like Wirbel have a more diverse repertoire of spells to call on, younger mages like Laufen, Lawine and Kanne all hyper-focus on one spell or one school of magic that the (overall) peaceful times have allowed.

It's interesting how Ubel, someone who enjoys killing, could tell that Fern was lying while Wirbel, the reluctant killer, couldn't. Just like she could tell that, despite his repeated attempts at intimidating her, Wirbel actually tried to avoid having to kill her as much as possible, Ubel could just tell that Fern wasn't a killer either.

I guess it's already known that the characters names are German words. No idea if someone already commented on this, but here are some translations of the test takers names: Frierens party (2): Kanne - watering can (at least in this context) Lawine - avalanche Ferns party (4): Übel - bad or evil (usually used for sickness, so its not exactly "evil", but more like simply "really not good") Land - land (can also mean "country" or "earth") Party 8: Ehre - honor Scharf - sharp Wirbel - vortex Party 13: Denken - to think Laufen - to run Richter - judge (tbh I think the name "Land" wouldve been a better fit, since he uses earth magic) Conductors: Genau - exact Sense - scythe Serie - series Some of the name choices are quite genius, others are a bit random or weird, but overall most of the important characters names are spot on and immediately tell something about their personality or some major characteristics.

Very cute Flexie response to EP 20. WIth respect to the Scharf vs Land fight, have you not heard the expression, "Put the petal to the metal!" WIth deep respect to the Wirbel vs Übel fight, Übel could have easily killed Wirbel as he suggests which also suggests that she is not as evil as her name. With even deeper respect to the Fern vs Ehre fight, Fern took down a major demon without breaking a sweat, Ehre who is the granddaughter of Lernen is in way too deep. Fern is a monster! In this world there does not seem to be any penalty for a mage to kill another mage. To Richter, killing Lawine and Kanne is just a reasonable decision in how to defeat Frieren. Richter is using Fullmetal Alchemist transformation magic which he will explain in detail. The next 8 episodes are hysterically histrionic. Hope your chair is equipped with seatbelts!

We got flashbacks this episode, just not Frieren's flashbacks. If you're looking for new shows in the future, might I recommend *Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside.* It's very much what I thought this show was going to be. It's nowhere near as good as Frieren, but frankly, I can say that about most anime, Frieren is just simply that good. But it's another show which features adventurers after they have stopped adventuring. And it's charming in its own way.

Wtf do you mean Richter has no reason to kill the kids?! It is the most logical way to defeat them just kill one of the kids so you don't have to defeat Frieren THE legendary mage in combat since not having a full party means you've failed.

The problem with "killing the kids" is that doesn't stop a much more powerful mage from killing you either during the exam or afterwards. Denken is well aware that Frieren defeated the Demon King, and respects that level of accomplishment as someone who you should not to anger. Sure he'll fight to test himself against her, but he won't risk her getting serious about wiping them all out.
