@@Techgame36509 no surgery is safe, and you have to figure out your priorities. Is the pain unbearable so much so that it warrants a risk of complications from the surgery, in your opinion? I had mine done a year ago and I've done great! I was in excruciating pain! Headaches that felt like my skull was going to explode. Severe pain down both arms. Pain and numbness then spasms in my hands that would make me scream in pain saying "fingers aren't supposed to be able to do that!!" Unable to walk straight and falling or as I called it doing the Granny stumble looking like a ball in a pinball machine, losing my balance and falling over just waiting for my food to heat in the microwave. Unable to sleep. Constant pain. Then I had my surgery done and was out of pain and all other God awfulness! I can't feel the two stabilizing rods and I have plenty of movement in my neck. Movement is impeded depending upon where along your cervical spine the rods and discs are placed. Dr. Auer was conservative and realistic and said maybe 70%. Man I am swinging along at about 95%!!! I went in on Monday morning and I was home by Tuesday afternoon. I still have some issues with my hands but that's arthritis and I use Aspercreme with Lidocaine and that kicks that pain in the butt like immediately!! I'm going to get my lower back done before the end of year. I'm tired of being in pain and a prisoner of my bedroom!! I want my life back as close to 100% as possible. I highly recommend having this surgery done. My doctor and his staff are AWESOME!! Da BOMB!! 💣💖🤓😷 I did the shots n PT n exercises and piss on it! That didn't put three discs between the 6 discs that were sitting on top of each other. That didn't align all the vertebrae that were not where vertebrae should be. That didn't do shit for the Stenosis that was so bad it was starting to cut into my spinal cord. Bone spurs so big the were digging into the nerves coming out of my spinal column! That's MESSED UP!! Doctors started telling me I had the neck of an 80 year old woman in my early 40s. By the time I was in my early 50s my neck was in it's 90s. Now for my lower back...and dancin' shoes!! I can't wait!!💃👯🕺

@Sticky Wicket, I am so glad to get your text. I feel like Im going crazy, I'm in so much pain. I had surgery Dec 11., and my experiance is opposite. I CAN'T FUNCTION. Both forearms hurt, i am extremely weak, lethargic, can't hold neck up, running a fever off and on and having headaches. Plus my incision is leaking. I woke up this morning with pain over my right eye and cant stand the light. At any point did you go to the energency room. My surgeon need not concerned. Not even for antibiotics. In misery....please answer. I'm scared. But this is all after my surgery
@bubblesmageefrompoughkipse71044 жыл бұрын
@@Precious1962 I'd go to the ER if I were running fevers with no antibiotics given after surgery. Immediately after my surgery I had headaches, was in excruciating pain, had weakness in arms etc and it was because I wasn't wearing my cervical collar, moving my head and neck too much because I wasn't wearing my collar, typing on my computer and phone waaay too much because I wasn't wearing my collar etc. That darned thing as uncomfortable as it is to wear I wore it and I'm glad I did because it made all the difference. I guess that's why they give it to us and tell us to wear it...duh! I also did NOT lay flat on my bed or anywhere else. I used 4-5 pillows and reclined back always making sure that my neck/head was supported. Then when I did take that collar off , and I wore that puppy as much as I hated it, it helped!! I made sure to have my neck and head supported at all times. Staying off your computer and phone...typing and texting is also a must for quite a while. Limiting all neck and upper body movement. No reaching, grabbing, lifting, bending over etc. I got one of those grabber reacher things the ones that have like a claw on one end...your doctor should be able to order you one under durable medical supplies...and used that and still do. A heating pad folded over the top of a pillow and resting against my neck was and still is awesome!! Use Aspercreme on incisions for pain. It has Lidocaine in it to numb the pain. I put baskets on my bed: one with snacks/drinks/wet wipes/kleenex etc another with my meds etc and a tray for my little stuff, phone and small pad/pen. I safety pinned 6' charging cables to my sheet so I wouldn't have to reach over and grab the darned things because I only had a 3' cord and it fell on the floor...AGAIN!! Wal-Mart has them for $5-6. If your phone has one of the newer usb charging ports Wal-Mart has adapters for around $3 so you can get the cheaper $5-6 6' charging cables. My clothes are still on my dining room table so I don't have to bend over...lol! I've let go of being an immaculate housekeeper...tooo stressful and I've let go of a lot of other things as well. I did have some fluid retention around my incision right after I got home that freaked me out, however, when I saw my doc that afternoon he removed the bandages and said we'd watch it over the next couple of days. Once I got home later on the fluid began to drain and it was clear, no blood or pus, no fever and no additional incision pain. It drained over quite a few days and the swelling went down and I didn't worry about it because clear fluid, good drainage and no fever plus massive antibiotics immediately after surgery and for 30 days afterwards I think. If I had a fever I would go to the ER. As far as the lethargy and weakness you just had major surgery girl! Are you taking it easy? Seriously easy! Like easier than Sunday morning easy? What meds are you taking? Anything new? If so what are the side effects? I hope this helps you out my dear. I'll keep you in my prayers. My apologies if I sound preachy...yes I do...but I learned these things from my own experience within the first 5-10 days after my own surgery. Once I did or did not do what I was or wasn't supposed to do things became better immediately. I can't stress staying off your phone and computer enough and wearing your collar and keeping your head and neck supported constantly!! Good luck and all the best!!

I had this done on c4, it was shattered by a fall. Approx 3 years later, the metal plate slipped up and caused disc c3 to push into my spinal cord. Emergency surgery had to secure the metal bracket back down where it should habe been and had to put the box where c3 was. Approx 4 years later, I was in a car accident that slung my neck badly to the left and has cause c2 to push into my spinal cord. Does it ever end? I am still walking with severe pain and numbness down both arms but mostly left arm. I'm going to see the top surgeon soon and I am scared to death. Has anyone had this sort of issue? Everyone please don't go for fusion! It's the oldest technique and may make the condition of other discs worse in the neck area. If you ask me go to a good Neurosurgeon and ask for ADR ( Artificial Disc Replacement ). The very first advantage of ADR is that it will still maintain your neck mobility and it mimics the function of an original disc. Secondly, it needs very little time to heal unlike fusion which requires months and which also restricts your natural disc movement. Since it's a new technology, results are only available for the past 10-15 years but they are really promising. You can also check patients who got ADR and enjoying their lives to the fullest. Hope, I helped. BTW I'm 21, and I got my lumbar l1-l2 PIVD microdisectomy 1 week ago. I also have a bulging disc in my cervical area but the problem is not that big and if becomes one in future, I'm surely getting ADR. Please don't rush to a orthopedic surgeon go for a neurosurgeon.

They have advanced surgery now..where its not so invasive..i Had to have surgery, ive been in agony for over 10 years now,i had Zero quality of life,i stayed in bed for the last 10 years with my arm up on a pillow,and when i say agony, i mean Extreme Agony..and couldn't take it anymore..everything thst happened due to the pain i was in was a domino effect on my life, i lost relationships,divorced, depression, ptsd,then hated going to any store,because i was so used to being alone,in my room..my teeth rotted out because of all the medication i was taking for all those years,the dry mouth they cause,and hated for anyone to look at me,even a dentist thought i was a druggie because of how they looked,i left crying..My injury happened because of someone talking on there cell phone hit the vehicle i was in head on,half my body went through the windshield..and that happened in 1991..so over time the disc compression wore the lining off all the nerves in my neck,..so i had two disc Replaced with steel disc,had two fused and all the others grinded down due to splintered discs pushing into my Cervical cord...like i said,i couldnt take the pain one more day..so i begged my doctor to find a surgeon that took my insurance, and that was a big part on not getting it sooner,now i have arthritis on all the discs the ones that are still there,i have whats called Frozen shoulder because of the nerves.. I am glad I had it done 5 days ago but we will see just how much the nerves quiet down it's going to take time but already I can tell that I'm not in as much pain as I used to be so some people do need it and some don't some people it does get better he told me this and some people because the disk have been compressed for so long that the nerves have been irritated and compress for all those years that sometimes it don't get better it all depends on the patient,i had bulging, herniated discs also so he had to move all the dis to grind them down and put the few that were left back into place

Fusion is old school. It can frequently wear out the discs below and especially above over 6 to 12 years requiring another operation. After a great deal of research, I went to a specialist neurosurgeon in Barcelona Spine who had performed several thousand Artificial Disc implants. They have discs not available in the US. Germany is where the artificial disc was invented in the mid-70s by a woman Olympic Athlete who was also a surgeon. It’s been long known Europe is ahead of the US in artificial disc surgeries. Mine was instantly life changing after decades in pain. After 4 days I walked with ease as a tourist some 15 miles over the next ten days. Had a blast. In the US big Cities will have surgeons who have performed thousands. I.e. Rush Chicago Dr Deutch.

Gabe, In 2016 had Lumbar Spinal Kinetics M6L artificial disc implant at L3/4 on top of an old fusion at L4/5 L5/S1 and paid $26k and was able in my case use personal paid medical tax deduction and in 2018 has two ESP artificial discs cervical C5/6 and C6/7 and paid $35k (all USD) at Barcelona Spine Center for Dr Clavel world class neurosurgeon. These costs are all inclusive except for travel and hotel stay. We chose to stay two weeks, they require ten days after surgery date. They include physical therapy and pretravel exam in the flat fee. Had a blast in Barcelona and literally was a tourist- what an outstanding walking City and perfect post surgical workout. Outstanding architecture to look at as well. Had lunch sitting on a patio restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. After the few day lumbar hospital stay, I walked 15 miles over the 10 days after with ease. The cervical has some swelling for a month or so so you swallow in smaller bites. The only thing I would have done differently is save money and have had the lumbar and cervical implants done at the same time, as they both needed it, but lumbar was the MF at the time. I look at it as something I never want to have to address again if at all possible and the couple extra years I would work to pay for it is fine. I have so much more energy and the near immediate relief from MF pain was a blessing long overdue. Not everyone is a good candidate for artificial disc implants. Very good general health, no other disqualification spinal disorders, good bone density (some women have problems with this and must be tested after the age of 40) and for Lumbar artificial discs the belly can’t be obese because the surgeon has to come in next to the bellybutton and there is a cavity access issue. The artificial discs are implanted from the front and in fact it’s not a long operation. No bone to heal like a fusion, fast recovery and far lessened chance of ASD Adjacent Segment Degeneration (that is where fusions wear out the disc above and sometimes below - often some 6 to 12 years later - like my old fusion did). The US surgeons are typically trained in fusion only and don’t have the training from Germany where the epicenter of excellence is in artificial discs. The FDA is slow too. The artificial disc was invented by a women surgeon Olympic athlete in the mid 70’s so the experience has put Europe forefront in this procedure. Europe has better choices in artificial discs like the two I mentioned above not available in the US. If I were to have artificial disc implants in the US, for cervical I would choose the Mobi-C and go to Dr Harel Duetsch at Rush Chicago who has performed over four thousand of these. If you ever need a double level second disc down the road, the Mobi-C is FDA approved for two Adjacent levels. In Europe they can even do four cervical levels probably using the ESP disc from France. Each surgeon will have their own choices of discs so you may be limited is asking for a model they don’t use. I also trust Dr John Hsiang at Swedish Spine in the Seattle area. My preference is a neurosurgeon as it’s a precision surgery and neurosurgeons more often choose least invasive and for example, I can’t find the scar on my neck in a mirror as he put it in the fold line. That to me is care and less problems with scar tissue. Some orthopedic surgeons get more aggressive. I might consider an orthopedic surgeon like Dr Michael Janneson in Denver who has surrounded his career in artificial discs. There are orthopedic surgeons and a couple neurosurgeons at Texas Back Institute (TBI) but I cant comment on them as I don’t know them. The issue in the US is fusion surgeons cut out bone and it does not matter how much as it grows back in for a fusion. However the precision of implant artificial discs surgeries requires exceptional carpentry skills so to speak. Many of the failed artificial discs in the US are due to improper placement or cutting too much bone away - or performing the procedure on patients that were never good candidates. This is what I emphasize, either find the best of the best and consider travel a small inconvenience, or if you can afford it, consider Barcelona Spine as it’s all about getting your life back! I have had chronic back pain for 34 years, originally from a weight lifting accident. These days, The Spine should be viewed as a one time surgery to implant a final solution. It’s not a guarantee, it’s loading the odds in you favor. There are issues when surgeons move the venous cava vein out of the way for anterior lumbar approach where it scars around it and it’s can be a problem in future surgeries surrounding it. Avoiding future surgeries is the goal. The Spine is also the highway and disease risks when you cut open that area is also something you don’t want, so picking an excellent surgeon is important. People that choose convince of proximity of a surgeon over specialty when it’s the Spine are imposing risks, in my opinion. It’s all about get your life back! Btw, Most US insurance will only cover emergencies out of US. Not medical tourism as the expression goes. However, some privately company paid self insured larger companies will cover such an out of US surgery and even pay for travel, because it saves them money. These employers are rare, but some are just more progressive. With that said, I would only do that to see the best of the best. Although rare, people go to low cost surgical centers and end up with serious complications. Dr Clavel at Barcelona Spine Center is in an accredited private hospital. He is a world class neurosurgeon. That pales from popping to Mexico for liposuction.... Best regards.

why the fusion? doesn't it prevent the neck to move? what about doing a disc replacement?
@Tatusiek_13 жыл бұрын
ikr, why cant they make an artificial disc?
@khx732 жыл бұрын
It prevents movement just at the one fused joint. You still have the rest. I had two joints fused this way, and still have no issues moving my neck. ADR (disc replacement) isn't always possible.

Why can't they just remove the "buldge? ( I heard this can be done through a few options: Ultrasound, or laser) - using "Non-invasive" techniques.

Hey I had s/f 4,5,6 almost 3weeks ago and I'm doing very good I'm a bit worried about one thing. Toight had an interesting thing happen to one of my thumbs ...so it was bad before surgery but tonight it suddenly "felt " numb again not quite like before but similar. I'm wondering if its is the nerves starting to do the things they are meant to do- and hadnt done for many years before surgery ... and maybe I'm connecting this feeling with what I've experienced the most of (15years) and more recently as well eccept tonight. What do you think?
