Such great content. It's important to remember, that this level and depth of reloading is for the pursuit of national level podiums. Many shooters who've put in the time to learn the fundamentals of position, wind, dope, and solid reloading, can be VERY competitive with a modest reloading setup and a well thought out rifle. When you get into tens of thousands of dollars of equipment, and thousands of hours of gunsmithing, load testing and cartridge development, you also owe yourself the same investment in your shooting ability. Few do that. Please remind new shooters that this is where you end up after years behind a the gun, not where you start. Enjoy the journey.

Thanks Greg, you are a brave man for even putting this out. When I started listening to this I was in my car (not watching, listening) and I came to realize that your reference to the 5% of handloaders and shooters who want the apex of accuracy would be analogous to a person who owns/drives a car of the lot versus a person who gets the same car but decides he wants the great performance out of this car and he sends the engine out to get balanced and blueprinted. On the outside it looks stock but on the inside, he has finely tuned piece of equipment that will outperform any stock version of this car and much more. I love the technical talk being an engineer, love machining and metallurgy. The problem is, I'm happy with factory ammunition and for target shooting at my level, that makes me happy. I really want to purchase a 22 Creedmoor - do I need it, no. But there's something about a really flat trajectory that is so attractive to me. I also want to check out an AutoDod - it must have some other uses. Keep the faith and keep the amazing content coming. With much respect.

After watching this through to the end I think you may have saved me a couple boxes of lapua brass. I trialed a few culled Lapua 6.5 cases on the Hornady neck turner and managed to get them to the point that they were sitting square and with proper lube the mandrel wasn't galling out the inside of the necks, the couple i did fired fine. Plan was to just to touch up the sized mandrel expanded and trimmed brass, as I lowered the blade it did start to find high spots. It took 3-4 clicks to get it down to where there was no longer any of the original brass exposed so it was defiantly finding something to trim. Without the toolset you suggest its tough for me to measure very accurately , Calipers showed .012 thickness but as you said that's not an accurate measure. The reason I was testing the tool with 6.5 is after several firings of my 7PRC Hornady brass you can put a bullet in the fired case and there is enough neck tension left on there to keep it seated. Not just the donut area, consistent tension through the whole neck top down. I am assuming its not being allowed to expand in the chamber enough. I do anneal with an AMP. Review videos of this cheap Hornady turner do show some slight level of improvement, but they all started with Hornady brass to begin with, which is far from Lapua or Alpha quality. Got some Peterson brass for it (sadly no 7PRC brass from Lapua or Alpha yet). Not sure if I should turn before it starts to develop the same issues, but I don't shoot enough to spend $4000 CDN on a setup to trim at the level you are describing.. heck even the cost of those Mitutoyo is daunting enough... Would you neck turn in this scenario given the limited equipment? I'm hesitant to touch it after watching this video but I am concerned about pressure issues from inadequate neck clearance.

Great video - very sound advice I wish I had when I started. I clean my necks with an IDOD (got a few upgrades that make things more consistent - I didnt get the auto version because I very much enjoy the manual process - practiced on brass I didnt mind harming in the beginning as I was learning the machine - a few years later, I get amazing results) and follow your interference advise - makes a big difference as seen on the AMP, group size and low SDs. One of the few places I get new and useful advice.

Great learning videos, Greg! The biggest reason I neck turn is for donuts at the neck/shoulder junction. The consistency of the bullet release has had a major increase for me. When I neck turn, I also do a skim or just under that to clean the bass up to and just into the neck/shoulder junction and I try to do that every time I process my brass to keep consistent. With that, I have messed up and got too far into the neck and after so long the neck will come off. Some shooters/reloaders neck turn for their sizing process to for neck tension also. God speed and thanks!

Greg, this was very very informative for me. I have an Autodod, but I now think I have had some flaws in my process that now can be corrected. I like the idea of (when using cheap brass) going directly from fire formed brass (carefully handled) to neck turning on the Autodod. Then annealing, sizing (with a SAC die)... I know that F class products has a service where you can send them fire formed brass and they will cut the holder so that it fits properly for the Autodod to turn it. This is what you were suggesting, right? Thanks again! Oh, yes! please! Do a video on setting up the Autodod... your perspective would be greatly appreciated!

Not so much with the neck turning portion, although very useful, but the transformation of the cases in shipping and tiny variables in the brass at different points makes total sense. I'm not a shooter but I did train as a precision machinist. Always interested in something new. When you were talking about clearances, I imagine the most important thing is to have receiver and barrel in exact alignment, 0.006" is a massive clearance on a 1/4" diameter so even slight misalignment of a few arc seconds will compound over distance. On micrometers, To be quite honest, unless you have a temperature and humidity controlled environment held at standard 68 deg F, a 0.00005 micrometer is a waste of money for 99.99% of people A normal 1/10,000" tube mic as you showed will be substantially cheaper and easier to use. I was taught in the 70's before CNC so know how to measure and machine though. Never used a CNC machine, doubt I ever will. I have had 'precision machine minders' tell me holding 0.0002" isn't possible on manual machine. The only reference surface is the flat, I guess you must check case is perpendicular to base before doing anything else? That's actually pretty cheap to set up and can be used to check entire case length for alignment The Harbor Freight lathe would actually be fine, as long as you budget around $125 for precision bearings and few hundred more for good set of collets. (a Chinese/Taiwanese collet set isn't going to cut it ) The only real disadvantage is the time per piece compared to a dedicated machine, although, when set shouldn't take much longer particularly if using only one size precision ammunition From what I have seen on most 'home gamer' machinist channels, the biggest issue is expecting replaceable carbide tips to do the job. On brass, a properly ground and polished HSS tool will almost always do the best job and give the best finish, even when removing a few tenthousandths (the exception is when a lot (1/8"~1/4" or more) needs to be removed on a diameter, even then HSS works fine but will wear faster than carbide . The solid carbide setup you showed at beginning looked cool though

You really need to do one on the AUTODOD. I have been learning mine and with no background in machining there is a bit of a learning curve. I note from your intro video that you seem to have the case protruding out from the case holder a little bit more that Bryan shows in his instructions. Has that yielded you better results?

That's just how this particular case holder fits this brass. I'd rather have it up closer to the spindle... but this holder was made for other brass.

I see you have the Blake neck turning machine. Do you like it. For the price he gets for them it had better do the dishes too. I have installed 2. of his barrels for customers and both were Duds and won't use another one. The first one took forever for the owner to find a half way "decent" load for it and the second guy brought one in and I mentioned that I didn't have much luck with the first one I spun up and sure as heck the second one was a dud too. One month later I took it off and put on a Brux or Bartlein can't remember which and the barrel took right off and the guy did quite at an NBSRA match with it. I have an old Craftsman lathe I use for small jobs in the shop etc. and I set it up with a collet closer and put a pumpkin neck turner in the tailstock it only cuts the OD of the brass but works real well. I have also over the years found that neck turning brass after a few firings gives me a better end product, a few firings and resizings seems to iron out the brass high and low spots and walls etc. thanks for the video Greg, lots of info to unpack i'm sure.

I'm hoping that the collet lock on the case head of the Forster trim setup that I use for neck turning prontes " coaxial " alignment ...the neck being perpendicular to the base of the case. I just 3/4 skim the necks to increase thickness uniformity to promote a more even grip or tension on the bullet. I have noted that the neck is usually skimmed more at the 6 o'clock position..... The single point cutter worries me about the surface finish quality on the inside of the neck on the idod The Forster reamer has long blades..makeing for a smoother finish...which...I'm not sure how well co axially aligned. Thanks for extrapolating on the concepts. Liked the Bible reading. Keep well.

One question, why don't you wait and use once fired brass that's had the case and neck OD formed concentric by pressure rather than using virgin brass that is likely to be off center and require more mtl removal?

For 34 years now of handloading and learning and shooting I've gone back and forth on neck turning. BUT, I do not shoot any competition, just like shooting and all of my rifles are for hunting. I have custom rifles that I paid way to much for down to factory Tikka rifles. For me, I've currently gone away from neck turning again but mostly because of time and lack of better equipment. I suppose I'd go at it again if I put the money into the IDOD. But I've been lucky I guess with results. Example. My builder completed many rifles for me in 2023 and 2 more last week that I have yet to pick up. But here's what I experienced with 2 I picked up in 2023 with rifle details, one in 7PRC, one in 6.5-284: 1. Defiance actions 2. Brux 4 groove barrels #5 contour for 7PRC, #3 contour for the 6.5-284 3. McMillan stocks (the lightest carbon fiber they make) 4. TT Diamond triggers set to 1 pound 5. RHR floor plate bottom metal 7PRC load: 180 BVLDs, LRT powder and Retumbo powder (a close second), ADG brass, Fed215M primers. After all the typical work up we handloaders do, I got caliber size to 0.100 groups 5 weekends in a row with bullets seated 8 thousandths off lands. Brass is new, no prep. I'd have to dig up my notes to get velocity, SD, ES but I recall it's among the best I've achieved in 3 decades and its' my first experience with ADG brass 6.5-284 load: 140 BVLDs, H1000, new Lapua brass, Fed210M primers. SAME outcome. Literally caliber size groups, no brass prep. Bullets are 4 thousandths off lands One thing I have noticed with all of the Lapua 6.5-284 brass is each one gets a donut after FL sizing. Taking everything into account, and only with these 2 examples, no need to prep brass at all, especially since these are only for hunting. I've not been so lucky with multiple other rifles despite high quality brass

I’m surprised that many people are using neck turning?? Only time you use neck turning is If You Have A Tight Neck. This is to turn the brass enough to allow ? The fired load to have enough clearance. Generally a tight neck chamber shoots more accurate. Has for me!!! From my 2 : 17/222’s improved, 22br, 22/250 improved and 243 improved

Hi Greg, 2 questions before this video. I just purchased a neck turner that only does the outside diameter. Almost all the videos just say neck turn. Am I effective just doing the outside? i would think inside diameter would be more beneficial far as bullet tensions with each case being different thicknesses in different areas which may cause a slight accuracy issue. Also at the neck shoulder junction does that rim move up the neck as you shoot an need to be turned every firing. Thank you for your time.
