Actual league lore since the olden days of their beta expanded on shit, LOR broadened everything out even more, they have a bunch of forum posts and separate site pages etc with indepth stories etc. It's more than "just piltover and zaun"

Talking about MMO's and "no other MMO who aproached a different formula has actually succeded" without talking about Final Fantasy XIV, Guild Wars 2, Runescape it IS actually copyum. WOW surely has make it's mark (the biggest mark) on the genre, but people played it and learned what they liked the most. Some people liked the story, some people liked the raids and bosses, some people liked the quests formula, some people liked the grind and killing monsters to level, some people liked the crafting and gathering, some people liked the power abuse or pvp and so on. There is an MMO for every aspect that i sayd and more...WOW breaking records with the HARDCORE it's not the same thing as "this is the perfect formula, wake up", it is a combination of nostalgia and blizzard fucking it up a lot on the retail and classic servers.

I know many hardcore WoW players who tried Guild Wars 2 and dropped it saying "It's too different" and that's exactly why Guild Wars 2 is a great game, it never tried to copy any other game and still succeeded trying new things that people may or not like. People who are looking for something hardcore were never gonna like Guild Wars 2 because that was never the direction of the game, it was never meant to be the "classic" formula that only WoW players know, they really should get their heads out of their asses and try something else instead of stating "No one plays MMO's anymore" and "All MMO's suck"

@@L2Valakas Where as years ago, about 3 years into playing GW2, I tried WoW (this was upon Legion release) and it was so clunky, ugly, boring - there was next to nothing I liked about it. I think it's fine to have a competitive preference, it's entirely valid, and there is competitiveness in GW2 if WoW players would look in anything that isn't the Open World PvE. Such as Raids and WvW (given you're on a decent server).

To be honest i think Necrit is biased towards WoW, there are definitely other successful MMOs like FFXIV and Guild Wars 2 who have been going for over a decade now, FFXIV is a more classic approach very similar to WoW but GW2 is a new much healthier design that's been working.

yeh he is definitely biased towards WOW, he said no other game was successful while being innovative but i know for sure that Destiny 2 and Destiny 1 were innovative in there space of MMO type game and being the only looter-shooter MMO to survive. also he said that destiny was focusing on 'fully procedural dungeons and loot' and even someone with an barely any play time in destiny 2 can say non of that is true, destiny 2 is a game which is a pre-built world with prepared instance encounters and preset loot tables which he said is only done in WOW.

I agree. What I like about GW2 is that it's not "forcing" me to play in order to keep up with the content, new gear lvls and other things, therefore not making it a second job of some kind, but WoW generally has better combat roles, PvE content and class design is also done better IMO

Yes with more similarities to GW2, would be ideal. But we the players want to see true innovation and fun gameplay, with awesome Horizontal Progression systems that serve players time excellently. It's a tall ask, and I'm probably not going to see the type of MMO I want to come out (excluding GW2, gw2 is amazing) I'm going to have to develop the team to build it myself, along with my other planned gaming projects. I have 3 years /played in retail wow, quitting blizzard projects permanently, after having played the entirety of Shadowlands. I will never go back to Horizontal gaming progression. Never again.

As someone who loves MMO's and Minecraft, I think Ghost will take a lot of inspiration from both MMO's and try to expand on it, as well as a minecraft server, called "Hypixel" which has an MMORPG style game built into it called "Skyblock", where you have your own world where you farm and such, and then a massive multiplayer pre-built world with mobs/dungeons/bosses and such. Even their concept art shows floating islands, and that's what skyblock is. Not sure how much minecraft you've played necrit, but Hypixel Skyblock might be something you'd want to check out on stream one time.

I imagine a series of easy baby tutorial fights leading to a scripted you can't win fight. The player dies and has an encounter with Kindred. In the end, Kindred doesn't take your soul. It instead makes a pact with you. It senses something is wrong with the world and charges you as its ward/agent to find and fix the problem. This could be the explanation for how the player keeps coming back to life. You are an agent of Death. For now, Death won't take you.

I genuinely prefer the idea that every, if not most champions, in the mmo take up something of a mentor role for your character, and each champion kinda has their own following. So I think it'd be cool if Kindred had their own cult of worshippers that you can join and Kindred would give you marked npc's you have to hunt down. But for a higher reward, Kindred could mark another player. And whoever wins that battle can gain Kindred's blessing. Just an idea I thought would be cool

Riot has always been a company that iterates on ideas already in the market, and polishes them to a mirror sheen. They took Dota and polished it into LoL, they took the auto chess format and polished into TFT, they polished the CCG format into LoR. There's no doubt in my mind that they're going to take the classic MMO format and polish it into something amazing.

Doesn't FFXIV use the whole themepark approach as well? I'd argue that that with WoW classic and FFXIV the market for theme park style MMOs is already pretty well populated. I think those two are the largest MMOs I can think of in general, with almost all other MMOs being MMOs secondarily only and serving a different niche on the gameplay front, rather than the lay-out front...

Would be cool to see a WoW Hardcore server where PvP was always on everywhere, and every NPC, including instanced ones, could only ever be killed and looted once by anyone. Players would drop all their loot on death, and their banked/auctioned/mailed items would be auctioned off on the AH.

Since league is all about combining items to make better items, what if Riot goes that route? You no longer farm rocks and trees, you kill people who always drop at least 1 component, then you have a game where you could put a group of 10 mobs in and Yone ult them and just see your inventory fill up with 10-20 item/armor components and fragments.

I'm a decades old WoW player, but Hardcore WoW is literally named after and inspired by POE's Hardcore League mode that came out 13 yrs ago. Don't twist it around like Blizzard made it, those 0 foresight and foreskin old bats wouldn't see money making opportunity if you put it in front of them thanks to Bobby "Esports is a fad" Kotick. There will definitely be a Hardcore League that's separated from Regular League like how PoE does, that's how Riot can appeal to both the hardcore playerbase and the casual playerbase who don't want to tell people they play Maple Story.

There's no screenshots because the game is in its earliest stages of development - R&D, concepts, etc. It'll be 2-3 years before we ever get a screenshot. Ghostcrawler's job was to BUILD the mmo team, not to build the mmo. The layoffs are definitely a concern, but I doubt that the team took significant hits.

Everyone knows that League of Legends has a very impressive lore that provides a solid foundation for an MMO. But we must remember that the lore in a game is not the first thing that players look for in an MMO. Most players will rush through quests without paying attention to the lore. The most important thing in my opinion is that the gameplay of the game is dynamic and that players feel the hits (with sound and animation), that the world is truly an open world without a loading zone or limited by walls invisible, no pay2win or p2progress, microtransations or other fisteries. Let alone feeling like you have an obligation to log in to do daily chores that put you off the game.

I would argue one of the more succesful mmos of recent years, FF14, did in fact do one big shake up differently that worked out well. Changing the class system. Instead of making a race and having them have a preset class, you can change your class on the same character and effectively level all of them on one character without making an alt. This is a system I would love to see taken in on riots MMO imo. Then you can tie classes to individual areas, like the Noxian Berserker, the Ionian Blademaster, Etc, and have the lore of each class much more deeply tied to the worlds lore itself. as well as have different avenues of classes available to you, without having to make and level a bunch of alts. Because the leveling experience generally sucks in every mmo ever. Im also in the minority though, i understand this, as I dislike classic WoW, and prefer retail or ff14.

Assuming it's still going to actually happen after the cuts, it would have to have been a theme park MMO, you can't really tell a cohesive story with fixed lore in a randomly generated world and the lore is basically all that riot has going for the MMO given you won't be able to play as the heroes anyway because having 50 garens just spinning is dumb

I have no clue what riot are planning to do. I have also never played WoW, but it does seem like the most traditional kind of MMO. All I know and came here to say is that, I have played Albion Online, and that has to be the absolute most fun execution of an MMO. Some systems could use some tuning, but overall it has to be my absolute favorite kind of MMO system. That said, I know its not for everyone ig. Specially for people who prefer the WoW style. BUT. I wouldn't mind if riot did some sort of fusion. Perma death is just such a cool concept, and Albion absolutely hit the mark with it. You still have you long term character progression, while in a perma death environment. Makes looting 10000x more satisfying, and keeps PvP VERY spicy knowing its quite the high stakes. That is, when death means you lose all your gear and inventory on you.

I dont think they will implement something like loosing all your inventory. For the average player (who plays 2-3 hours per day) loosing everything can lead to give up the game. Riot want to keep their player base so maybe they will implement special server with this feature (but to be honest there is low probability that it happens) but definitly not at launch

honestly im all for this ive wanted the mmo to go this route since i heard about it the classic wow formula for mmo's is great for social interaction which imo should be the lifeblood of an mmo themeparks dont feel much like mmo's to me theres not enough interaction you get paired up with random people and never interact with them you see random people in the world and never interact with them the classic feel is just so much more fun and enjoyable i really hope thats the way riot is going ill be playing it so much if it is

I think you're discounting retail WoW in this. It's going a lot stronger than a lot of people try to make it seem. I love SoD and I know Hardcore hit it big for a bit but I can't deny that retail is still heavy hitting.

The only concern I have about that is what's happened to LoR. riot tried to do a more "traditional" ccg battle game, with crafting cards and unlocks and whatever else, and despite the game being distinct in so many ways they never actually, really, broken through even the hearthstone barriers. So, doing the same thing a little differently than the current industry leader is not always a sure bet. League works in large part because it's simplified and streamlined the dota formula. I don't think there's room to simplify the formula much in an MMO.

easy. Lacks of marketing. Imagine having ads, events, merchandising and also constantly pushing riot's commuinity to try LoR? that's why Riot Forge Failed. There was 0 marketing, Riot didn't wanted to succed, no matter how important it was for the Lore. Know we know, after the Ex-Rioters talking, Riot just cared about one success (Could be Forge, LoR, Arcane) And the one that worked, the others would dissapear. Arcane won, So LoR and Forge died. That's the real Riot.

Well, they will simply have to do better than them. Better lore, better graphics, better engine, better class and combat design. From what I remember one of the riot employees have confirmed that there will be an action combat, so that would be a thing that could make the game different from FF14 and WoW. Keep the classic formula, while taking a modern take in fields that can be improved.

I pray to every god on this earth and beyond that they don't go for an "old school" model just to farm nostalgia. Not every person looking forward to this is 40. Even though I'm young, I have some experience with MMOs and would LOVE to see some major shakeups. Some new ideas and approaches. If it ends up being reskinned wow in Runeterra I'm not touching it. P.S. If the combat is tab targeting I might become a terrorist, and don't give me any of that soft lock bullshit.

Theme park , sandpark, sandbox theres an mmo in every genre that has succeeded. I just hope riots mmo if its a theme park doesnt stall on content for to long, thats the biggest downfall of themeparks unless they have a massive audiance already that r willing to stick around.

Tryndamere played on Tallon Zek. It was a pvp EQ server. WoW was child's play compared to EQ, especially a pvp one, where you had to fight over the treasures as there was no instancing. Riot games are all about pvp, so I'll be surprised if there will be any instancing. Also, there are other companies making traditional mmo's. Monsters & Memories will be the best of them.

It makes sense for riot to go for the classic mmo route because they already have a map that people want to explore, they already have lore, items, pets/mounts and races unique to runeterra, if they use this and than use the combat of classic wow it will be a succes and eazy money for the company. They are smart and they will surely go for a classic mmo style with unique twists to make it fresh and that will make it good because the world building is stelar.

Wow Classic is doing well for the same reasons OldSchool Runescape is doing well... Nostalgia. Lot's of players have good memories of the time when they played the original game, and want to try to relive those memories.

Nothing personal Necrit but "No other MMO that has tried to innovate has succeeded" feels like the line of someone who doesn't play MMOs. The graveyard is very large yes, but Guild Wars 2 is still going fairly strong and technically falls into the category of having "innovated". Meanwhile WoW has had clones, now and in the past, and they've also all died. The idea that you could somehow build a WoW sized MMO just by being designed like WoW is, to be frankly, extremely dumb logic. It's like conspiracy theory board covered in string with a tanker truck pumping copium into the room levels of bad logic and MMO player "GIVE ME MORE MMO!" screaming.

I am hoping they follow in the footsteps of Classic, and don't get too bogged down with recreating some of the skills necessary for League. Albeit being able to move while casting would be nice. That said, it would be nice if they maybe took a page from like, Guild Wars 2, in which you have a somewhat tailored personal story to progress through along with side quests. And please, please be open world. Instancing just takes so much of the wind out of the sails in emersion.

Streamer blindness at play here. Classic hardcore was popular for streamers, it was a tiny minority of players. Classic WoW dominates streaming, but more people are STILL playing retail. It would be so foolish to try to make a "classic" mmo without the nostalgia for the outright bad design decisions of Classic. Worked really well for WildStar!

I'm not sure looking at classic WoW, or rather only looking at classic WoW is a good idea. While it is popular, there have been MMOs that iterated on the formula and managed to gather their own playerbases. For example Guild Wars 2's exploration and open world content is probably the best I have seen in MMOs. Or we have Final Fantasy 14 that focuses on and delivers a great story in an MMO enviroment, while also having battle content that, I would say, is at least equivalent to WoW's. Also, imo, if they want to target not just MMO players, but players new to the genre, classic WoW is a horrible template. It is a very slow game that doesn't respect your time at all and while people tolerate it in WoW, I don't think they will do so in a new MMO.
