However, the main reason I removed it is that hearing cosmic entities speak perfect English breaks the immersion in the world (hopefully it gets changed to something more inhuman in the full game). The experience is definitely better without dialogue, it makes it more mystical and unsettling while focus can be aimed more towards the surroundings. If the dialogue voiceover is better in the released game that's going to be awesome. I can't help but think this game is a bit inspired by Scorn too, while Scorn is also clearly inspired by Beksinski. The game looks really cool so I hope the developers will be able to finish it!

I feel like the world this establishes is a lot different than Scorn’s in tone - where exploring Scorn’s world is depressing and bleak, exploring Necrophosis’s world gives more of an macabre but wondrous vibe. Scorn was also more blatantly cold and malevolent, but Necrophosis seems oddly benevolent? Like, this world isn’t fleshy and evil, it’s just the nature of the thing

If not benevolent then far more "guiding" Alas- I do hope the developers will flesh out the ideas to be inspired rather than seeming ripped off- several parts present in the demo look way too ripped from Scorn, I mainly talk about the player character and the pedestal creature they rode to the entrance. The game is still quite underbaked so improvements should not be hard- I just hope it won't stay as it is due to looking way too cheap for what it could be.

Being a sci-fi book writer, I can relate when you wrote: "the main reason I removed it is that hearing cosmic entities speak perfect English totally breaks my immersion in the world." That is one of the main reasons I hate when Hollywood adapts ancient languages to english, dumbing-down the dialogue so "everyone could watch equally". Totally un-immersive. If you are gonna talk about aliens, they probably won't speak english, but some sort of direct mind communication that do not even use words in order to be understood.
@FoxyPercival714

Wel I disagree. Then everything would have subtitles. They must speak in a language we hope to perceive and english is it.

There is a pretty similar concept to this, I forgot where, I think it was one of HP Lovecraft's Old God Pantheons. That they are essentially a globules of flesh, but they look like humans because that is what they want them for you to see, when in reality, they are the most vile looking thing in existence.
@MauMenzori
@MauMenzori Ай бұрын
@@FoxyPercival714 What is wrong with subtitles? That is a small price to pay in order to enjoy a bigger, wider universe and experience new sides of narratives. As a minor example, I don't live in North America but I watch a ton of Hollywood movies, and always giving preference to the original audio + subtitles instead of picking our local dubbed version, which breaks half of the fun right from the start. When creating new species, when adapting old languages, stick to their costumes and spoken dialects... adapting kills the mood. But then, this is just my opinion, and everybody can have theirs. As long as they have fun watching, that's what matters.
@MauMenzori
@MauMenzori Ай бұрын
@@Xport9 Ah yes, but you see, Lovecraft (one of my biggest inspirations and references when writing) has found a masterful way to adapt humans to his Miskatonic / Chthullu Mythos universe. As far as the Old Ones goes, they still have a good method of being heard in english, and Lovecraft explain how and why these gods can be heard and understood by mortal minds. Its all about finding a method of explaining, keeping the "Lore" intact.

This looks neat. Perhaps a bit too derivative of Scorn. Yes, I know they're both inspired by the same art (and I'm a huge Beksinski fan), but what I mean is the design of the character, the initial setup (being dropped onto the ground with similar animations), etc. After watching the unlisted video, I can see why the dialogue killed your immersion. I actually really like the vague poetry. Seems like it would be a cool thing to unpack, but the giant spooky monster man is really just a british dude, and that does kill it a little bit.
@AlphaBetaGamer
@AlphaBetaGamer Ай бұрын
Yeah, the British accent was weird! I also couldn't understand why this cosmic entity who lives in a place billions of years in the future (from the Steam description) was quoting 20th century Earth poetry (Ozymandias by Percy Shelley for example) to another non-earthling creature. I think all of the dialogue needs to be reworked to make more sense (or just removed). I do really like the game though. The artwork is excellent and I'm looking forward to exploring more of its fascinating world.

So far, this demo seems pretty promising. I like how Beksinski's art is integrated here. All seems very familiar, yet very alien at the same time. I personally like to imagine this is not an alien world, but something like Limbo/Purgatory since almost every character represented here is human-looking, there is a mention of Ozymandias (Greek name for Ramesses II) and Khnum (Egyptian god of Nile flood and creator of humanity), and that caped entity stated that the place is "a reliquary of the past" while showing skyscraper-like buildings looming over the horizon. Think of it as Agony game, but it went with soulslike dialogue, with actually comprehensible (and vaguely friendly) environment and without seggsual content. It's probably the reason why characters in game speak English and in poetry too.

Congrats to the devs! Would love to see more of this for sure. My feedbacks are, atmosphere could be much more dense, and stronger. Also, I might not be your target audience but for gameplay, in it's current state it feels like you invite the player to constantly find puzzle pieces to progress one small step further, I think it would be much better if we slowly progressed as we "got lost" in the world and atmosphere to experience it while being subtly led through the environment. To me otherwise just leads the focus to finding the next piece of puzzle, where I can find it, etc, rather than paying attention the world. But since in the end it all comes to what kind of a game you want to make and for that, it seems you are doing great ^^ I just think it has a lot of potential in the other end of the gameplay spectrum too, just like Journey :)

I'm having aprehension about this game due to how close it looks like Scorn. Not because Scorn is a pinacle, but because nobody likes total copycats- you can be inspired by the same artwork and still be distinct and unfortuantelly right now Necrophosis has way too many assets that look like taken stright from Scorn.

The gameplay and pacing also seem VERY similar. If you showed me this and told me it was Scorn, I'd believe you.

The music starting @16:40 is very calming / mysterious / ambient and somewhat religious at the same time. Would very well fit the warriors who are born to protect the the legacy of the god emperor.

Thank you for removing the dialogue. Someone on a different video mentioned it, but the voices sound lifeless. Wouldn't be surprised if they were AI generated to be honest. Thinking on that now, that would make for an interesting trait for a monster that's supposed to invoke the uncanny valley.

At least the Cenobite/Void orgy that is the landscape was inviting. Also, I think I need to clarify that I mean the game and not the movie when mentioning The Void.

Gives a different experience editing out the narrative parts for sure. It removes context somewhat as I also watched Manly Badass Hero play it too with nothing edited out. These ancient beings appear to all be British lol.
