I shielded a clients Gretsch because of a weird buzz he was getting. Turned out great, with a before and after test with a couple of my amps. When he took it to his next band practice he had the same interment buzzing as before. As it turned out, when he was at rehearsal, he kept his cell phone in his front right pocket and every time his phone would receive a notification, his guitar would make the noise.

Local taxi firms were the bane of our gigging existence. The lead guitarist's Marshall stack would pick up the calls from base to random cars as they went past .... shielding??never heard of it! Whilst it was regularly annoying some of it was quite entertaining, especially between numbers when it related to people leaving the bar having their departure announced by the waiting taxi .... "make sure you get paid BEFORE you take Jim Smith anywhere, he tries to negotiate a discount for cash when you get him home". That was met with a massive round of applause and laughter.

Years ago when I was a telephone repairman, I got a dispatch for a noisy line. This was about the time wireless home phones came out. When I got there I dialed up something we called quite line and the line was as quiet as a mouse. No hum, buzz, or anything. I checked it inside and out but found nothing. With no choice I called my dispatch and was about to report it as found ok. As I was talking to my dispatcher I was just walking around and suddenly the phone started making a whop whop sound. I looked up and the ceiling fan was on low and the whops were synchronized with the fan blades. When I walked away the noise stopped. I explained what I found to the customer and told her to avoid standing under her fan when talking on the phone.

That’s exactly what would go on in the ‘70’s at our club in downtown Montreal, at the Mustache club, on Closse street next to the Montreal Forum ( when it was the Hockey Place). You’d go on a Monday /Tuesday to get in cheap and check out the band. As the week went on, if they were good, more would show up and indeed, word would spread-FAST. By Saturday night, it could be packed. I remember seeing The Blushing Brides, a ‘Stones cover band, but they were a NoName/ Garage band, but.... they were great. The lead singer was a Jagger clone, even the moves/mannerisms and lead axe player was a dead ringer for ‘Keef’. They were kept for 3 weeks, which never happened there. And.... they’re STILL around after 45 years. But I digress, that’s a nice Bass.

My band mate from many years ago had a PA with 3 good quality Peavey power amps. Not too quality stuff, but definitely good. If we ran the power amp on the bottom of the rack we got noise on both guitar amps and the bass amp. Ironically, my bass with the EMG pickups, pots, and wiring, had the least noise. Depending on which basement outlet circuit we plugged that one PA amp into, we would get a different level of noise. When we moved to our drummer's basement (actually, his parents basement) we sold the third PA power amp and never had noise issues again, aside from the guitar player's effects processor. No matter what he did, that little solid state processor couldn't produce a guitar tone that didn't sound like noise to the rest of us.

It worked pretty well, until we were playing in a small town club, and during the show, right in the middle of the set, a Taxi dispatch was heard loud and clear through my amp. Turns out, the local small town cab company was using FM radio (instead of UHF like most others were using at the time) and it was on the same frequency I was using. I was tied to teh stage for the rest of that gig, and all subsequent ones until I got a good Pro setup. :D

Hello, Dave. Most don't know about RFI. RFI is radio frequency interference. It's produced by poor shielding of any audio equipment, where you pick up radio stations, usually FM stations. This phenomenon is called microphonics. Active electronics have a ground, in case no one knew. Everything needs to be tied to common ground, including the backplate on all guitars and basses, passive or active. Now most times the shielding should work. I say this because not all manufacturers follow the same standards. DIY'ERS. Take note. Dave I commend you on your skills. Thank you. I just wanted to give the following to all that watch. I hope this helps someone. Thanks for your videos. Ciao.

Not guitar related but I was once called back to a customers house after I had finished installing a ventilation system in the attic above the bathroom. It was a sunny Sunday and had been planning to make the most of it with my girlfriend but had to attend the call out because the customer was complaining they couldn't sleep because of a loud humming noise (UK 50HZ) which started after I finished the installation ! It was a 2.5 hour drive to their house and I spent about 1.5 hours trying to locate and isolate the noise, I quickly realised it was not the equipment that I had installed but couldn't leave until I had identified the issue. It turned out to be an electric toothbrush which was on charge inside a cabinet in the bathroom which was where a power outlet had been fitted ! I sent them quite a large bill for that call out !

It's funny what can cause noise problems. I have an American Deluxe Fender Strat with N3 pickups and S-1 Switching, it's what became the Elite, and that's great for keeping quiet around electrics except when in front of my Corsair backlit keyboard. The LED's in it makes it go nuts, so I have to turn the backlights off. Anywhere else, no problem!

I suspect Back EMF. Tell your client to run a single conductor (covered wire) from the ground connection on the receptacle box, used to plug the amp into, directly to a clean ground. Do not use a water pipe, or the cross beam in the basement but right to a ground stake that goes into the ground. I used to have the same problem with very sensitive electronic equipment like electron microscopes. If you put a scope on the ground line of your power source you will probably find +10 volts or more on the ground. Very common in residential wiring. The other option would be to build a Faraday cage around the amp - not very practical.

Many of the 1st couple generations of home LED lighting generated significant amounts of radio interference. I had a kitchen radio with an attic mounted antenna (used mostly for receiving low power college radio stations), fed through a shielded coaxial cable, that would go nuts when I turned on some of the LED lights I had just purchased. At work (audio repair shop) We tested a bunch of different brands of LED bulbs in order to find some that didn't generate any noise on AM or FM. Nowadays this type of interference doesn't seem to be as much of an issue, But unshielded or poorly shielded guitars, especially those with single coil pickups, are always going to be prone to picking up noise from anything and everything electrical in the general area. When it comes to nightclubs, club owners are notoriously cheap and will typically install the cheapest & cheesiest bulbs, lighting fixtures, electrical devices and dimmers that they can find, or use dimmers that weren't designed for use with fluorescent or LED fixtures. Also, switching power supplies are everywhere nowadays, from computers to wall wart power supplies and chargers, and all of these will tend to emit noise not only through the air but back into the power lines in the building. Best to shield your stringed instruments and use a high quality shielded cable to feed your amplifier. A wireless system may save you from the possibility of electrical shock on stage but is also far more likely to pick up noise and interference.

I would like to add a few more things I didn't mention in my previous comment. 1. The RFI may also be from the amp, as well as the cord. RFI is AC current operating at any frequency. When you experience microphonics, it's FM, although AM can get through. This also include any appliances, and all electrical wiring. Also evident is EMI, which is electromagnetic interference. You may experience this when you're near a electrical field, such as an outlet not properly grounded.

You have to play one to begin to appreciate them. When I first learned to play I was borrowing a Squire P Bass which had been converted to fretless, it had a nice action but gave me all kinds of issues. Firstly it was heavy, very heavy and really big and bulky, second thing was neck dive and being fretless meant I couldn't hold the neck because it was necessary to spread my fingers really wide with just the tip of my thumb on the back which was good practice but made it very difficult for a beginner. I only used it for a few weeks before buying a headless Westone Quantum short scale bass, the difference was astonishing ! It was about half the weight and had zero neck dive, it was a lot of fun to play and sounded fantastic for the music we were playing ! I could even dance around on a crowded stage without knocking over mike stands and bashing cymbals ! It stayed in tune really well, the neck was very stable and there were no keys to snag anything or get knocked and detune a string. More experience players found it very unfamiliar and one guy said it 'felt horrible' compared to what he was used to but he admitted he could not do what I could do on stage using his std P bass which restricted his movement severely. It's a far more practical and stable configuration than a huge heavy headstock with big eared keys sticking out !
@mikecollins82414 жыл бұрын
I have had several basses (and one guitar) that felt "head heavy" to me, probably because of the large tuners.. I always though the "classic" Stienberg basses played great (standing) but were stupid looking (no body) This style/ model I'd buy if I could find a 4 string I could afford (and I am not really even a bass player )
