You two are great! Kevin's laugh. I love it. It's so warm. And Ray, how quickly you've caught on to all this knitting jazz. No one would ever suspect you've still a relative beginner.

I use a salad spinner to get all the excess water out of the yarn after I dye it. Cost was about $15. I just bought some yarn to dye from Knit Picks. I get some of my dyes from Dharma Trading. Try dyeing with food coloring. Its fun too!

It has now been two weeks since I found you guys and just want to say again THANK YOU for the entertainment and keeping me company while I knit. Is there anything that you guys can't do?? Ray your sunset hat looks like a life long professional knit it and Kevin your dying skills are already professional. Love all of the colors you have done. Very jealous that you literally can have any colorway on any base and weight at any time. Looking forward to the next 100+/- episodes.

Kevin I actually said Ooooohhh out loud, alone on my couch, when you brought out that blue DK! LOL. You are making fantastic colorways right off the bat! Can't wait to see more. Have you watched Bakery Bears? Kay is showing how she made her hand dyed yarns that she used to sell. It's good info on how she keeps the skeins from tangling, how she adds certain colors to achieve a certain look. I don't think anyone would be looking to match her colors, but her info on how she uses the dyes is really interesting. She did one in episode 166 and episode168, and are doing that feature every other episode. They have timestamps in the show notes so you can go directly to the section. Just FYI if you are interested....

Watching from New Zealand. Bed bound with damage from prescription drugs and knitting has kept me going for the past two years or so. I've been learning about yarns and their suitability for different projects - your discussions of yarns is really helpful. I've binge-watched all the episodes from No.1 in the past week and have caught up with you now. So funny at times (the hat episode had me in stitches) and lovely to see you just being you and having a knit-natter.

No!! No remakes!! They always ruin it!! 😂🤣😂 Kevin for the sweater, put in a lifeline & frog!! I guess I'm just weird with sweaters, I do the sleeves before the body, that way I'm never worried about running out....I actually have fixed 12" circulars... I'm trying to do 2 hats a month, I have a whole binder of patterns & starting at the top........ kinda. I'm on #4..... even though I have 5 other projects started. 🤷 Nope, not a winner...nor did I expect to be.....😉 The yarn is gorgeous!!! I need to get dyeing again, but I need bare yarn too, have to see what knitpicks has in stock...they were out of a lot... Get removable zip ties, that helps to keep from tangling & makes it easier to pick up...and you can put your hanks in a lingerie bag and use a spin setting on your washer to get the access water out, I do that all the time.... ok, it works for a top loading... Oh, Kevin, no more falling down stairs!!! Oh, I'm in central California, we're in extreme drought, luckily the Sierra Nevada mountains are getting a lot of snow..... Yosemite is buried

I have done some yarn dyeing and spinning so I hand wash a lot of yarn. I place one skein at a time in a laundry net wash bag and place it in washing machine on "DRAIN AND SPIN" setting only and it dries the skein so much faster.

I just subscribed, but have been watching for a few months. I’m a cross stitcher, but enjoy watching the knitting and crocheting by others. I also love to see the dyeing. I also dye fabrics and floss. So many talented people . Oh, I slipped on our deck stairs a few years ago, wearing tennis shoes, ice on the stairs and down I went. I ended up breaking my right wrist...ugh. I did cross stitch, slowly, with my left hand...when there is a will there is a way.

hi, boys! you two are just what i needed this morning, Kevin, you gotta wear shoes to clear off the steps! ( i said that in my Mom voice!) i also recently used the mattress stitch to seam my Gd's sweater vest, it's kind of magical like turn a heel! the cowl and sweater are great, the socks made me smile, as long as your bind off is loose enough, i'd pick it up and continue up to have them the same length! laughed when you boys talked about drying your knitted items, my hubby days the heat registers spend the entire Winter covered in drying socks, mitts or hats, one of the good things about century homes!Ray our sweater is coming along and love those socks! looking forward to the live next week, stay well!! ♥

So much chit chat, I love it! Leo and Roxy ia awesome yarn, born at my LYS, the Little Red Mitten. They have a new base coming at the end of February called Basics. So excited for them, and for me! 😄 Snowblowers are the best. But don't be surprised if after you buy one it doesn't snow enough to use it for like a couple of years - happened to us. Buy the best you can afford. We've had ours for 20 years, this year it wouldn't start, $800 later... But its now like brand new, good for another 20 years!

Hey Kevin, you don't need a spin dryer to dry your yarn if you washing machine has a spin cycle you can control the rpm on. I put my dyed yarn in a clothes bag or a pillow case if there is a lot of yarn and set the spin cycle on 700rpm for my shop and a few of my dyer friends xo the same. I do make sure I have the nylon zip ties on to reduce tangles and you do need to snap the yarn a bit when it comes out to straighten it out - Rebecca from Chemknits snapa the yarn in a few videos.

Got to spend last night working on my Icelandic Sweater and watching episode 31. Kevin, the socks... I could tell something wasn't quite right, then it hit me! Then I realized they were knit top-down, not toe up.... oh no! I have the same book "Knits Men Want" in my library. I got it when it first came out and I know I have not made a single thing from it. I will have to dig through my library for Men's Pattern books to see what I have. I'll add that to my Episode 10 of Boozie Bears list. I dabbled in hand dying myself and found adding additional ties to the skein helped prevent the skeins from becoming tangles messes. It was always worth the effort. Vince

Ray, for using the short tips like on your sleeves, you may find it easier to use the 3-inch tip as your right needle and the 2-inch as your left. I have big ham hands and that made a huge difference to me. (I do the same when using the Chiaogoo Mini shorties to make 9-inch circs for socks, too.) Kevin, you have madd yarn dyeing skillz! Kevin, the cowl is beautiful! Same for the gray yarn you dyed. For the socks, I thought you could also rip the upper part of the biggest one and make a bind-off that mimics your cast-on, but you didn't seem to wanna do it because of the difference in the ribbing (?) Not sure I heard that correctly. Anyway, you could also maybe go a bit lower a re-knit it to the top to make the same thing than the other sock. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find a way! If this idea can help: I have a dehumidifier at home so I hang the wet skeins in front of where the dried air comes out and they dry pretty fast (a few hours).

Always great to see your wonderful projects. And your dyed yarns are to die for! Fantastic colors! I'm so happy to see what you are creating! Really Oooh Ahhh Gorgeous! ...... A question. Ray. When you say your leg on your socks is 7", where does the measurement begin and end on the sock? Are you beginning at and counting the rib? Do you end at the beginning or half of the fish lips kiss heel? Or are you using some other way of doing the leg measurements? Books. "Guys Knit" by Nathan Taylor. "Modern Lopi" by Lars Rains has some men's patterns in it too. Best wishes for more February!

I love the idea of a scrappy Volcano cowl. Maybe use 1 neural color like a gray or tan for the whole thing then swap out the scraps as you go? That stripe could be just whatever neutral you used or like you said just a random pop of color.

This was such a good episode, OMG! At about 51:20 in, you guys talked briefly about how to wash/block super wash, etc. and I’d love to hear more about this in your upcoming live Q&A episode, or a future fortnight episode. I’m new to knitting and haven’t done anything that needed to be blocked/washed yet. What resources are there to help me learn more about how to wash and block super wash to prevent too much stretching, shrinking, or felting? I’m about to start on a pair of socks and a sweater with Knit Picks super wash worsted. Thanks in advance!
@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast
@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob! Superwash yarn normally grows when washing. We don't normally worry about it for socks or hats and cowls. It can make a garment grow in length. Throwing a garment in the dryer on delicate and a couple minutes at a time can help reshape it. Superwash shouldn't felt when in the dryer, but it could, so just keep an eye on it.
