As a maths teacher in the UK , and means addition so we say one hundred and twenty eight. For the decimal we use point. One hundred point two eight. Language usage in different countries is so interesting. 😊

Rae when I am Tunisian crocheting I have my working yarn in my left hand and tend to have that holding the working yarn and the project, and am using my pointer finger to wrap the yarn around the hook to pull the yarn through the stitches. I am always looking at the side of the hook, it is never twisting if that kind of makes sense. And I will move the hook side of things up and down as I am wrapping to help with the process. Hopefully that is helpful! I do always love seeing what you guys are working on and is always so inspiring!

Kevin, your “ yarn baby” is beautiful! Great socks guys! Ray, good luck with your TC. I had a hard time at first holding my hook with the loops on it, but it got more comfortable over time. Toni Lipsey has a review of TC hook sets. I didn’t care for TC until I watched Toni’s review and bought a Clover set, based on her review. Definitely worth watching.

We Brits do indeed say one hundred and twenty eight, and we have a bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) on a car and petrol stations rather than gas stations. My favourite US English word is Eggplant, tickles me pink every time. The first time I visited the US I was baffled by Eggplant noodles, took me days to work out it was Aubergine pasta. I also love cilantro and zucchini, coriander and courgette here but my absolute favourite phrasing difference is negative two instead of minus two. You do need to stop calling everything a sweater though, its a woolly pully and a cardi if you don’t mind 😘.

Hey Ray! My friend Julie from accrochet is a designer of both regular and tunisian crochet, she told me she buys the ChiaoGoo Swivel 360 Silver Cables - 3 piece - 5cm (2") and puts it between the cord and the crochet, this makes it a lot easier to turn it. Hope this helps!

Hello from the UK! I’ve always loved your term “fall”. We call that season “autumn” but I think that “fall” is just so much more evocative. Your were right by the way, we always add the “and” into our numbers. One hundred and twenty eight = 128. One hundred point two eight = 100.28. It does sound jarring to our ears to say one hundred twenty eight. Might just about get away with one twenty eight. But that’s enough on that subject! 😂

100% am on the same yarn journey as you. I am in the process of mass producing Ross Hats with my acrylic blends and other machine wash tumble dry yarn in order to use it up. The hats are all getting donated to local shelters and I am actually finding this “project” has been GREAT to practice skills I learned in Patty Lyon’s workbook! Winning everywhere! I will never yarn shame as all yarns have a purpose and “audience”, but I sure appreciate the variety of natural fibers out there.

Why do you put “audience” in air quotes? All yarn has people who want to use it for a variety of reasons. I have a large stash and have been crafting for decades. There isn’t a single type of yarn that I would not consider using depending on the project and the recipient. Experience widens one’s perspective rather than shrinking it.

@ I absolutely agree. I think I just couldn’t come up with a better way to say that there is always a purpose for every kind of yarn. As I have become a more skilled knitter, I am more aware of which yarns play well for which projects. It can be acrylic, blends, sock, merino, and all the others! It’s all good! Right now, using up my stash acrylic for learning skills and donations has been affordable and efficient for me. I apologize if I came across as judgmental. Happy knitting!

My favourite American words are cookie and cabin. In Australia we call cookies 'biscuits' and cabins are a 'shack' or a 'hut'. I also love that you call Christmas 'the holidays' so it's inclusive, and I think you guys made 'yarn' the default instead of 'wool', which is great as we use more fibres than just wool. Oh, and 'hot cocoa' sounds more snuggly than our 'hot chocolate'.

Hi guys!! YES, I was taught to never said "and" when saying numbers... What I've noticed of late is that people don't say "the" before some places... example: "I went to hospital", not "I went to the hospital". Maybe I'm just old. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm sitting here watching you & making chickens, I found a ball of "ice cream" yarn & assembly line making 4... barely making a dent in the ball. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just need to dye some red and yellow... Ray, on the thumb of the mittens, or at the underarm, or wherever there might be holes,pick up as many stitches as you need and get rid of the extras on the next or even the second round. Love your dedication to the podcast!

LisaR: Love your projects ! The Tunisian Crochet hooks come with cords that rotate ( as in some circular needles...) I find that very helpful when the project is wide - Maybe you'll find that helps ;) Also ❤, the Bargello is gorgeous. When you mentioned cutting after you were finished- 😅... a word of caution? Check really carefully that if you cut 1) there's actually a closed mesh left ( ie you're not cutting away the right side support of stitches... 2) stabilize the work before cutting . Buy a button hole cutter ( a flat tapered stable short length razor sharp edge with no wiggle , comes with a block of wood to put underneath . Then you can just press down in one cut . Trying to cut on this slippery plastic this close to the stitching , for such a long way with exacto is high probability of a slip ... 3) the other way : Do an overhand stitch around the edge in either one color or match colors all the way up by leaving a tail to stitch over to secure old color .... ps - Wow! My spinning didn't look close to yours after much longer - Kudos ! ❤

I love Tunisian Crochet I have put this shawl on my to do list I am currently converting a knit sweater pattern into a Tunisian pattern and I am really liking how it is turning out Your shawl is stunning !! You need to try the Knitter Pride Dreamz or Ginger set they are really great With larger projects unfortunately that happens its because you are only working in one direction instead of turning the work. You will figure out a way to make it work

You’re right… in England we say ‘one hundred and twenty eight’, when I moved to Massachusetts it was one of those things I’ve never quite changed. In England we also say *Petrol Station*, *Torch* for both the flame on a stick, and the battery operated light, or phone light, *Boot* is a trunk…also we say Bonnet rather than hood of the car….there are so many, and Ive lived here so long now, and as I’m getting older I’m forgetting which is which… 😆 😆 We call a sweater a jumper, and I was here for years before I found out that jumper here is a kind of pinafore dress!!! It was a bout 20 years before I found out that coffee cake here does not have coffee in it…I avoided it all that time!

You mentioned over the pond differences, I'm in Scotland and I love US people using the word 'trash'. Trash Can, take out the trash etc. We have rubbish bins, pedal bins, paper bins, wheelie bins - so many flipping bins 🙄. Trash is a fabulous self-explanatory word! I did use it as much as I could visiting NYC last year 😂.

Welcome to February! Last night another KZbinr was talking Popeyes. I'm going today! I feel you! Did you ever get to see the Les Garçon brick and mortar (very Brit like speak!) in your travels? I can't wait to start my jelly roll. Mine will be more consistent in size. Mine will be all Aberdeen minis. I was all set to make something from my stone soup yarn. Some nasty creature must have invaded. It was all small strings.....both skeins. That isn't fair!!! I'm expletive! I try not to swear! That color looks like a lovely brown to me on this device. You have to seek the sunlight to determine the true color. 🤣! Your yarn journey sounds like mine including Arne and Carlos. COVID changed things for me. I never had time to bother with KZbin so there you go! Your canvas project I would like the pattern as a scarf! Oh Ray, yes it is going to be cool! I like the crescent shape but I like more scarf like size. Would it be easy to modify? Is it going to be wider? Are you on the decrease or still increasing. I'll have to see the WIP when more in the finishing mode! - 2 weeks??? Do tell about your teapot. Different temperatures intrigue me! Isn't it a no no to use boiling water? Kevin your newly spun yarn is BEAUTIFUL!! And Ray, I had the same problem when getting used to Tunisian crochet. It was weird to have to hold your yarn that is on the needle while manuvering your hook. I did not ever learn a trick just got used to it but still worry about it stretching my fabric (so far things have blocked out fine). TL Yarn Crafts also has a great tunsian shawl pattern which is super popular and easy to knit and free on her website - it's the Lamia Wrap and looks amazing in hand dyed yarn.

Ray, my grandmother taught me how to make reversible afghans using Tunisian crochet hooks about 24 inches long that my grandfather whittled from wooden dowels. Last year I made my first twin size afghan using one of those hooks. First crochet project I made and I love it.

HEY YOU GUYS!!! Congrats Winners!!! I first learnt about not using "and" when I started writing out the amount on a check. Ray: I had to give up crochet because I started cramping in the hand that was tensioning the yarn and holding the fabric. For a while I couldn't go more than about 5 minutes. That's when I finally picked up knitting, after several failed attempts. Since then, I have been able to crochet again, but haven't done that much. Kevin: I love OOAK skeins. In Shetland, we call a flashlight a 'blinky'. A trunk is also a 'boot' here and our knitting is called our 'sock' or our 'maakin' ❤

You are absolutely correct when you speak about how we say numbers! Using the filler “and” in mathematics implies that a decimal is being used. Being specific in the way we communicate using numbers is attending to precision and is one of the standards for mathematical practice that the National Council of Teachers Mathematics emphasizes.

I guess the standards have changed since I went to school. I would never use “and” to denote a decimal point (it means addition to me). I would use “point” to denote a decimal point. I live in the US and have a master’s degree in math and am a retired statistician. Thank you Ray and Kevin for another great podcast!

@ you are also correct! Adding actually is exactly what you are doing when you say “and” when you are describing (verbalizing) a whole number that also includes a partial number. Being precise in language provides clarity for the listener. Yes, it is true that you can also say point, but there is a level of translation that the listener must process to understand that “point”= decimal= additional partial numbers where as saying “and” automatically tells the listener that what follows is additional to what has already been stated. I’m currently researching and writing my dissertation for my Doctorate of Education on effective methods for teaching content specific vocabulary in mathematics to students who are simultaneously learning English and grade-level content. The English language and its layers of connotations and implications in usage are vast and can add unnecessary layers of cognitive work for anyone in mathematics. This is why NCTM specifies that attending to precision is crucial to success in mathematics.

I am curious, Ray, what length you have to make your heel flap for a heel flap and gusset. I’m trying to assess whether 5 founds before starting decreases on an afterthought heel will be enough. I need to add 1 1/2 “ before starting a shadow wrap heel.

I love the American "sidewalk" - that makes so much sense,. In England, it's called a "pavement" - I did a quick google, it's Latin for beaten floor. Sidewalk is much nicer!

I kept a list of British words that differ from American words. A couple I remember are: boiler suit is overalls, a plaster is a bandaid, braces are suspenders, of course jumper is a sweater and a biscuit is a cookie.

With your Tunisian crochet project, try working with the fabric sitting on a table in front of you so that the weight of the project is supported. It will help with the wrist strain. The hand cramping is likely because the hook is short for your hands. Maybe look for an interchangeable set that has a longer wooden or metal hook part.

2:15 i am Latvian, UK resident for 19 years. From what I hear, they would actually say One Twenty Eight for 128 😄 took me a long time to get it because when people say it like that, to my brain, they should mean the number 1.28 😂😅 discussing prices with Brits is pain for me, so I evolved in my English language to automatically say it as a proper number, example they say "it cost me only Three Twenty Five!" I immediately "ask" ( not to sound rude as if I corrected them) "really, Three hundreds Twenty Five!" 😂 so in that case they can confirm or correct 😂 (because they could mean it not as £325, but as £3.25. So confusing 😅

Ray wood hooks like knitting needles are a little stickier then metal so I would think your stitches on your hook are sticking so the metal will probably make it much easier to use
