Favouritism towards lighter skin tones is embedded in the Indian psyche and Tamil cinema is no exception. Through conversations with industry professionals, artistes, social activists and the common people, this documentary examines the history and practice of differential treatment based on skin colour, especially regarding actresses in Tamil cinema. “Colours of Kollywood- A Melanin Deficiency” was made by students of Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R Film and Television Institute as part of their 5th semester project.

@@ஆனந்தராஜ்-ழ7வThere are many Thiiya and Ezhava actresses in South Indian cinema. Some of them are Sanusha Santhosh, Kavya madhavan ( she is the beauty icon of Malayalam film industry)Mamta Mohandas, Chippy, Nikhila Vimal, Maithili, Samvrutha Sunil, Rima Kallingal, Parvathy Ratheesh ,vijayasree... etc. Thiiya/ Ezhava cast is most liberal caste in Kerala. That is why they don't mention their caste name.I think pramalu heroine mamitha baiju is also belongs to ezhava caste...it is difficult to find caste of ezhava/thiyya people.becauase physical appearance of thiyya and ezhava community is same as Nair and Syrian Christians.but they belongs to Avarna/ OBC caste.

Super Documentary!!! The proud of Tamilnadu is Black🖤, idk how it is in north, but south is Black. Fair comes only through wealth or nature. It was always like that, that black is ugly and fair is beauty💔. Rajini Sir brought the life of Black on screen. Disappointed that Kollywood doesn't show the true colour of Tamilnadu. Vijay, Rajini etc were very dark, and through AC, Fair cream and healthy food, they became more fairly. There is no dusky actress in Kollywood anymore. 99% Kollywood actress are from other states and only fairly.

This generation of filmmakers must prioritize creating meaningful and relevant content that resonates with diverse audiences. It's crucial to take this responsibility seriously and actively work on incorporating diversity in all aspects of our films-be it in casting, storytelling, or representation of cultures and perspectives. By doing so, we can ensure that our movies reflect the richness and complexity of the world we live in today. This approach not only enriches the cinematic experience but also fosters inclusivity, breaks stereotypes, and creates a stronger connection with a global audience. Let’s commit to making films that celebrate and embrace diversity in every frame.

Back to back truth of Tamil cinema.. mindset of people and the directors needs to accept these facts . When a dark skinned makeup less heroine was cast in the movie “Chitha” , the reactions of people , the questions of reporters showed how shameless the society is to accept watching a normal looking woman who is gorgeous as beautiful. The definition of beauty was cruel .

Yes, in Madras he casted Catherine theresa backing with fact that again it shouldn’t be stereotyped that everyone from North Madras is darkskinned. Mari Selvaraj has most of his leads as wheatish brown except Keerthy Suresh -Rajisha vijayan, Divya Duraisamy and Kayal Anandhi. Vetrimaran casted only Aishwarya Rajesh. Everyone has been fair skinned. I am not saying this to defend them, It’s like giving excuse for colourism that exists in society’s mindset by just pointing fingers on a few filmmakers.

the intention behind calling some white or black should also be considered at this point. When we call someone white, seldom it is derogatory.. but the case ain't same for calling someone black. you can't accuse people of getting offended when they have faced oppression in many forms for things which aren't in their control. so yeah, more than perspective, I think people should be more accepting of others

And when they potray women as fair in cinema it gives a mindset to people as fair is beauty and dark is ugly which basically reflects in normal lifestyle on people. now a days potraying a women in dark skin has became a pride as showing that they does not show inferiority complexes but only few films do that and feel proud of it , but it should be us there acting in it dark and dusky . i hope people come to a proper mindset and the potrayal of colourism ends in cinema. Neelam production's movie Bluestar also had this problem. Actors had to put on a dark skin make up When you can actually cast Dark skin actors. Hope this Colourism/ Racism fades away from our Kollywood industry in upcoming years.

Great work.! Loved everything about it. The only thing that irked me was most of them who spoke about colourism in this video were dusky people. Would have been nice to hear from a fair skinned person how misrepresented dark skinned people are.

It is a good effort by the team to bring this issue in the visual media. Though it is not easy to change the mindset of Indians on color prejudice , this type of videos will open up discussions on this issue and may change people's mindset in future.
