I can already tell my brain is gonna hurt after watching this.

I tried real hard to keep as simple as possible. That being said, if theory isn't your strong suit, it's going to be difficult to put NH to work.

axeofcreation I studied music theory and a bit of 20th century composition styles. But some of stuff still hurts my brain. Additionally. It’s been about 10 years since I’ve studied it. Regardless, it’s a great video.

If you still are having difficulties with this topic, I would recommend these two tutorials I saw in reddit just today: The first one is for you to understand how to use something called Tonnetz (Tonal Lattice ou Tonal Net), which is a great visual way to see the relationship of intervals and the structure of chords: imgur.com/a/aWIhR After you understand a bit of it, "converting" chords to negative harmony is just a children's game as you can see in this another tutorial: imgur.com/a/HGxfD You could use paint at first to "draw" the shape of the chords in this diagram if you like it, but with time you get used to. I've just found this tutorial today and after just some minutes I can tell you that I didn't thought this concept of negative harmony would be as interesting as it sounded: it really generates chords which mostly fit within the music or the tonality, but have a more jazzyand spacy much more colorful fashion. I would recommend you to try at first "converting" a simple II-7, V7/9, I7M cadence (these extra colours, of course, help you to get more colorful chords in the other end, when you "convert" them to negative - just don't get too eccentric with it, it can generate some very dissonant things sometimes), it will surely surprises you :) I hope I gave some sort of help :)

else where they say that playing the major scale intervals backwards from C gets you G phrygian which is why c-g is the negative harmonic transcription in the key of c

So negative harmony is basically adding tritones to the melody?
@axeofcreation6 жыл бұрын
Everything is inverted. Take a melody and invert all the intervals. For example, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, it starts with a jump of a 5th up. Well, NH would be a 5th down. Same for the chords, build them in reverse, so if a Major triad is a M3 up then a m3 up (C E G), invert that so, a M3 down from C (Ab) then a m3 down from that, F, you get an F minor chord. So the Negative Harmony of any Major Triad will be a Minor triad a 5th lower.

Oh! Now I get it, thank you! I'll try that

I'm so glad I subscribe to your channel!!! Not your typical flash, (pretty tired of the current flash anyways!) but very serious and meaningful lessons presented in a way for those of us who don't have the best grasp of theory can get a heck of a lot out of it. Thank you and keep up these lessons.

Always appreciated to have another video on negative harmony. A lot of them are hard to follow and don't apply the concept practically. I've been a fan of Jacob Collier for a while now and the concepts he talks about fascinate me to no end.

Interesting concept! Coincidentally I just discovered Rick Beato, he has really helped give me composition ideas. I've seen some Adam Neely videos, they are interesting but his personality irritates me.

SubArcticWolf Tools & Outdoors Beato is great, especially his in depth theory stuff. His newer series I can do without. I can see that about Neely, though he has some good ones.

I’m confused, this seems like more of a melodic concept (mirror inversion) than a harmonic one.
@axeofcreation6 жыл бұрын
7stringprogmetalguy That's because it really is a Melodic concept though you can equally apply it to find chords and Harmony
