@@MilkWithIce The animated series had much better writing than the graphic novel. After Ch7, which is when Disney removed the original writer to another country, the series lost its focus and dropped a lot of elements out of nowhere to make a fairy tale, while the first 7 chapters hinted at a much bleaker story. The adaptation at least knew what the series was going to be from beginning to end and remained focused throughout its entire run time. Nerissa being Caleb's mother made a lot more sense from a writing perspective than just being yet another villain that doesn't have any connection to the cast, only to be defeated by the protagonists (bonus points for her making Will's boyfriend turn into a winged demon, instead of a random fisherman from the comics).

Witch was actually a thing all the girls in my country were crazy about. And it was never the graphic novels - those came later as a compilation of comic books (at least for us) - it was the magazines. Each volume also came with a small toy, jewellery or other trinket. But the magazines themselves looked very different from what you can see in the French version - less pages, less photos, more Witch content and drawings, definitely no comics for another series. I collected Witch magazines from different (European) countries and the differences are huge. There were also novels (which all of us read) and advice books. And thousands and thousands of different Witch-related media. At peak popularity there were yearly official Witch conventions where you could get autographs from artists etc. Witch was huge and very important for a lot of girls - at least when I was growing up.

The graphic novel started with a dark and bleaker tone than the rest of the series, setting up existentialist crisis, passing of a family member, fear for the future after moving to another city, etc. Heck, there was even one chapter where Will makes clones of all of them to investigate Meridian, but she can't make one of herself properly because she's afraid she'll take her place like she saw Taranee's taking hers! Then Disney decided to move the creator of series to another country for a different project and threw in a bunch of writers and illustrators who didn't really coordinate well with one another and ended up creating a whole mess! Elyon went from being subservient to Phobos and actively taking part in his plans, trying to convince the girls to take her side, acting like the victim when they defend themselves from Vathek, helped kidnap and torture Taranee and fled after things got bad for her. Then the substitute writers did a 180º, dropped out of nowhere that Elyon was the "Light of Meridian" and transformed her into an innocent child being kept from the truth, invented a guy that was destined to be Cornelia's boyfriend for the sake of a cheap drama after he just stood in front of Phobos and let himself get struck by his magic (seriously, he knew Phobos was way out of his league at that point, he was the one who said it to the girls), and suddenly the goal had been shifted from closing the portals to freeing Meridian from the usurper ruler! Then they got out of ideas pretty quickly and abandoned the magical setting for the best written chapters, kept recycling the same plot points, the elements had to test them every other Tuesday, Caleb was written out of the story by breaking up with Cornelia because he saw her base form, the art kept shifting constantly between arcs or even chapters back to back in some cases, each girl was given a story with a different boy multiple times (especially Irma, who kept revealing her use of magic), among various other problems. The worst chapter was the one with the obligatory environmental message, which was outright insulting to the audience! Thankfully the animated series was much better! Instead of following the graphic novel, they decided on a single goalpost and threaded the plot carefully to not deviate from it, took inspiration from the most creative concepts and took them to a direction that made sense for what had been established before and did a good job at pacing the series. It's a shame that Disney was an ass to the creator and removed her from the series. I don't know what her plan was for the series, but from the very beginning it was clear she wasn't going to for the bubbly happy ending that we got after Ch7.
@IYS0IYS Жыл бұрын
According to the authors, Elyon was supposed to be the sixth witch, her powers were the powers of time, nature and death, she should have been the guardian of the Metaworld. All the girls were supposed to be attracted by the evil side, by the Metaworld, crossing the barrier, and even fighting each others. They were supposed to be able to transform themeselves into animals too. The themes of transformation and being stuck between the Metaworld and the Earth were some of the main themes as a metaphore of adolescence. In the end Elyon would have sacrificed her life to save the other witches and redeem herself (I'm sorry if I made some mistakes but English it's not my mother tongue).
@TwilightWolf032 Жыл бұрын
@@IYS0IYS Don't worry, your English is really good. And thanks for letting me know, I did not think they had something so dark in mind. I can see why it wouldn't fly as a Disney property, and I'm glad we got the animated series to bring up quality writing with the world she created while maintaining a lighter tone, but I wish the author got to complete the story she had started creating. There is an unofficial fan translation available online, but now that Yen Press is rereleasing the series, and retranslating it, then there is a good chance that people will learn about all that was never brought over. Yes, they eventually got new powers, and that is what you were seeing. An offhanded comment in the show (if I remember correctly may have been the comics as well), by Hay-Lin, when she saw her grandmother's guardian form, she mentioned that her grandmother looked like how she looked in her wedding photo. So they basically transform into what their bodies would be like in their prime. It kinda makes more sense, since they'd be physically stronger when in their prime. The popular reason why W.I.T.C.H. was canceled in the USA, was because of it competing with Winx Club, and losing. The comics lasted until they ended in 2012, but only in their original country. I am not too sure when the comics were canceled in the USA, but my guess is that they weren't selling too well and were canceled when the show was. Hopefully, you continue to read the comics, as they get reprinted.

I forgot to mention how eventually they did away with the 12 chapter arcs. And I think that the current arc that is being released, The Book of Elements, is the first one to start this trend, it being 16 chapters, well, 4 volumes for us in the states.

I'm italian and I can confirm. Winx copied the base idea of witch (5 magical girl with different characteristics). Then witch tried to copy winx introducing new fashion outfits and hobbies for all the girls (in winx season 3 the girls all started to sing, so witch made all the group loving hip hop dance, even to Irma, the most goofy). All these changes to make the W.I.T.C.H. all the same was what made me abandon the comic, the girls felt no more unique.

Here, the bus is a school, because the new mission for the girls is to find some magical kids and teach them how to use their powers. So the bus is entirely magical, every witch has her own classroom ( they'rereally cool ) and they protect magic and the kids. They'll have to fight against a group of magical ladies, but it's in the future. The asian family you see are important in this story line, the father opened a magical portal but lost one of his daughter because sh went into this world, due to that, he wants to erase all of the magic.The Witches will fight this, and also discovered the other world which is kinda cool

Cornelia dreamed of Caleb for years before finally meeting him in the underworld. The comics are WAY better than the show. Reading it you quickly grasp the layout. Elyon is very important for the plot, no, it doesn't work better in the show. The show didn't show her relationship with Cornelia and her slow turning to the dark side. Also you don't see the dilemma Cornelia is facing- should she live in the past and focus on her dream boy or live in the present and date Taranee's brother. Will's family drama isn't present - her mom getting married to her most hated history teacher. Irma's split personality - the hot guardian who gets the boys and the real girl who's only liked by a nerd. Also she has a terrible relationship with her dad. Taranee goes from a boring nerd to a street dancer who dates a "bad boy". Hay Lynn was a weirdo, understood only by her grandmother who passed away soon after. The comics were for teens, the show was for kids.

The way the page was displayed at about minute 3:00 is how it's supposed to be. In the west we read top to bottom and right to left, in that order. So we do go first panel, long second panel at the top, third panel (second from the top), and then the others :) that's how it's intuitive to most people, and that's what we're taught in comic classes. That still doesn't make sense bc then you would read the long panel on the right first, then the other two on the left (the way you describe is how manga is read, not how we read at least in Europe). Also I remember being confused about the panels many times bc it wasn't consistent, like sometimes it would go like in the video, and sometimes it would go correctly like how people are used to read it. This was also a problem with many western comics they published here so I feel like even the creators weren't sure lmaoo

So this is interesting because we were talking about this in my comics class (I major in writing/drawing comics). The layout that he was talking about actually is confusing for an American reader. This is possibly because in a lot of popular (American) comics, there’s a certain order of panels and also many newspapers have the “funnies” which are typically 3-4 panels read in one row and so we’re conditioned to read directly across and then move down. Because the tops of the panels line up, we would read that top panel on the left and then the long panel on the right. When you reverse it, and have the long panel on the left with the two smaller on the right, we naturally understand to read right and down.

In my country it was coming out as as an original magazine, not part of a Disney one. There always was some kind of souvenir with it, like a lip gloss, little mirror, perfume, bracelet, ring and necklace (once it was the heart of Kandrakar). I was collecting all the magazines up to some point. Until I got grew up a little. Still It has a special place in my heart. Witch was quite popular in Russia, especially in 2005-2007, when I was in elementary school, but I wish we also had graphic novels. In our country, the comic was only in that monthly magazine format, and it was painful for me to wait for the next issue to see what happens next. There were some beautifully designed books that put together the chapters of one story arc, but they usually were published only after the arc had been finished in the magazine, so they still brought nothing new for those who were reading the ongoing (like I did). I think the magazine stopped appearing in our local shops around 2010, and I remember being sooo disappointed when I couldn't find it anywhere. And we had a second magazine called "Witch: Your Style"! It was bigger in size (almost twice the width of the comic magazine), had less pages and mostly consisted of tips for pre-teenage girls on "how to be beautiful", "how to choose a lipstick" and "what to do with your feelings towards That Special One™". And we had TONS of merch of all kinds: from dolls (I had Taranee, that was my favorite, and Will), jewelry, and stickers to shampoos, perfumes, and make-up.

Their "new powers" arc was just starting, there were some shocking revelations about Caleb and then boom, no more magazine >.< I only found out a few years ago that the original comic only ended in 2012 T_T Taranee remains to this day one of my biggest childhood icons
