To configure Cacti and MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher) for network monitoring, follow these steps: 1. Install MRTG MRTG is used to monitor traffic load on network links. Step-by-Step Installation for MRTG: Install dependencies: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install mrtg snmp snmpd apache2 Configure SNMP: Edit the SNMP configuration file: sudo nano /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf Uncomment or add the following lines: rocommunity public syslocation "Data Center" syscontact admin@domain.com Restart SNMP service: sudo systemctl restart snmpd Configure MRTG: Create MRTG configuration using cfgmaker (assuming your SNMP device IP is 192.168.1.1): sudo cfgmaker --global "WorkDir: /var/www/mrtg" --output /etc/mrtg.cfg public@192.168.1.1 Generate the index page: sudo indexmaker /etc/mrtg.cfg > /var/www/html/mrtg/index.html Run MRTG: First run: sudo mrtg /etc/mrtg.cfg Add to cron to run every 5 minutes: sudo crontab -e Add this line: */5 * * * * /usr/bin/mrtg /etc/mrtg.cfg Access MRTG: Open your browser and go to your-server-ip/mrtg. 2. Install and Configure Cacti Cacti is a web-based network monitoring and graphing tool that uses SNMP to poll devices and RRDtool to graph data. Step-by-Step Installation for Cacti: Install dependencies: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server php php-mysql php-xml php-gd snmp rrdtool librrds-perl sudo apt-get install cacti Configure MySQL: Set up MySQL database: sudo mysql -u root -p Run the following commands in the MySQL prompt: CREATE DATABASE cacti; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON cacti.* TO cactiuser@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'your-password'; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; EXIT; Import Cacti Database: Import Cacti tables: sudo mysql -u cactiuser -p cacti < /usr/share/doc/cacti/cacti.sql Configure Cacti: Edit Cacti configuration: sudo nano /etc/cacti/debian.php Update the MySQL credentials: $database_type = "mysql"; $database_default = "cacti"; $database_hostname = "localhost"; $database_username = "cactiuser"; $database_password = "your-password"; Configure Apache for Cacti: Enable the Cacti Apache configuration: sudo nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/cacti.conf Then enable it: sudo a2ensite cacti sudo systemctl restart apache2 Configure Cacti Poller: Set up cron job to run the poller: sudo crontab -e Add the following line: */5 * * * * www-data php /usr/share/cacti/site/poller.php > /dev/null 2>&1 Access Cacti: Open your browser and go to your-server-ip/cacti. Login with the default credentials: admin/admin. You will be prompted to change the password. Conclusion: MRTG is lightweight and excellent for monitoring router traffic. Cacti offers a more detailed web-based interface with various plugins and device polling support. Both tools can help you monitor network bandwidth, devices, and other metrics effectively.

Sirji nice very useful informative session. Ftp/telnet/http are non secure unencrypted plain text protocol where d username/password can be captured by ettercap tool(already installed in pentest distro like backtrack/kalinux using ettercap -Tzq command) n so they are not secure as compared to sftp, https, ssh/scp. For allowing root use in ftp, I noticed (but I am not sure n expert) some comments line in /etc/vsftpd/user-list to check /etc/vsftpd/ftpusers man ftpusers According to man ftpusers ftpusers(5) - Linux man page Name ftpusers - list of users that may not log in via the FTP daemon Description The text file ftpusers contains a list of users that may not log in using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server daemon. This file is used not merely for system administration purposes but for improving security within a TCP/IP networked environment. It will typically contain a list of the users that either have no business using ftp or have too many privileges to be allowed to log in through the FTP server daemon. Such users usually include root, daemon, bin, uucp, and news. If your FTP server daemon doesn't use ftpusers then it is suggested that you read its documentation to find out how to block access for certain users. Washington University FTP server Daemon (wuftpd) and Professional FTP Daemon (proftpd) are known to make use of ftpusers. Format The format of ftpusers is very simple. There is one account name (or username) per line. Lines starting with a # are ignored. Files /etc/ftpusers See Also passwd(5), proftpd(8), wuftpd(8)
