Mom is great! Super sharp for 91. “Say what you mean, mean what you say” is sage advice, particularly in this day and age. The world needs more people like your parents.

This is a real parent... Putting their child and their life first before anything that the parent might personally want... Children need discipline, sure, but more than that, they need freedom to be who they want to be

It’s a nice sentiment, but actual parenting might not be as simplistic. There’s something to be said for being a role model to your child and demonstrating the behaviour you want them to emulate. If you don’t happen to have what you want, or once you’ve become a parent something changes in your life to make you unhappy, keeping yourself stuck in that situation isn’t necessarily a positive thing to do for yourself or your kid. It’s also not zero sum - being a parent doesn’t necessarily mean you have to put your kid’s wishes ‘in front’ of yours. There can be room for both.

She definitely keeps him grounded. I liked that she firmly but lovingly corrected his recollection of certain details from his past. For example, he did receive praise; it just wasn't constant praise. His mother seems like a BRILLIANT being.

"Bochinches" is a Puerto Rican word that means "gossips/rumors". And gossip can be described as confusions if you wanna get technical and philosophical about it. Aside from that, I love this clip. Absolutely fascinating and brilliant examples of loving and healthy ways to parent your kids. Thank you mama Tyson for giving these examples. As someone who grew up in a Puerto Rican house hold, I seriously wish these parenting techniques where used, instead of spankings with belts and chancletas. Thank you again. :-)

The embracing the "Why is that?" With an earnest answer is one of the most geniune things you can do. Even when it is the 20th one this trip, and doesn't make any sense why it could matter, but can see that somehow it does and might help them navigate it for themselves later on. Especially enjoyed this one, big ups and kudos for the Mom and Pop, that brought this wonderful translator of the cosmos to us all ❤

I remember the episode when you originally had her on Startalk ❤ 0:43 She's too funny. Your mother was absolutely adorable. I'm sure she was filled with so much insight, and spiritual wisdom, the best recipes. She tugs at your heart string a little for those of us who's grandmother and wise old aunties have gone forward to the next life. You don't realize how many questions you have to ask them, until you no longer can. My grandmother's energy is always there.... its like a low hymn.... especially on those strange days when the wind blows a certain kinda way. That's when their song gets a little louder.

One of the things I admire most about Colbert that also shows up in Momma Tyson is that they have a respect for science, and understand the benefits of that, and admires her scientist son, promotes what he does, but still has the Catholic faith. Her faith and Colbert's faith are strong enough to make jokes, strong enough to support science, and healthy enough that she is still a Catholic despite all of that. From this interview, it does not sound like Momma Tyson is unaccepting of Neil's different beliefs. That is exactly how it should be. "This is what I am and it is for me. Here is why. You believe what you want to and be your own person, even though one day I hope you find your way to me." Rather than the "You not believing makes me sad and I am going to constantly push you to follow my beliefs." Honestly, just a healthy mother and son relationship

*Tips for all dads* Active listening builds emotional bonds; share quality time through activities you both enjoy. Foster open communication, making your child feel heard and valued. Lead by example, embodying the values you wish to instill. Encourage independence, supporting their decision-making and responsibilities. When she mentioned people talking to each other by hand held devices even if they are in the same room, it made me think of my ex girlfriend. Sitting next to her and having to comment on her posts on facebook just to have a "conversation" with her. At first everyone reading thought it was cute but I was mad. I said that yes it would be cute if I didn't also know that I am sitting right next to her and she would not acknowledge me unless I messaged her or commented on her post. She responded by texting me. We are not together anymore. I had to ban my friend from bringing his cell phone to my apartment when he came to visit. He would come here and sit with his face in his phone and not hear a single word anyone said to him, or contribute to the conversation in any way at all. He would say that he wanted to see a movie so I would get it, and he would not see a single second of it. Being on a device has its time and place. If it starts to interfere with your interactions with other human beings in the physical world, then it is borderline rude and disrespectful. During the winter, my mother made us eat supper at the table as a family. No television, or anything else. During the summer we did not have to because we were all home all day, every day.
