I love that a scientist is a celebrity. Naturally, we gravitate to entertainment, and from there, come our celebrities. Neil is brilliant, humble, open minded, and charasmatic - the typle of large scale influence we need now more than ever.

Although he is a great man, he is not a scientist. He just is educated about science. He is a personality, tv host and guest, and author. Scientists dont become celebrities, and if they do its after their career is already over or they are long dead.

Joshua O'Brien you couldn’t be more right my friend. If you have a society that doesn’t care to know about something then it will be much harder to advance us forward in that particular something. Take Old school Bill Nye (without the politics) and Heisenberg from Breaking Bad. We as a society are presumably much more interested in the field of science bcuz of those two. Therefore we have more people wanting to learn and progress our society. So in a sense Neil is the modern Bill Nye the “Space Guy” making science and astrophysics fun for people and less scary to pursue

What I love about this man is that he puts the magnitude of the cosmos into perspective. Like how he said that it's almost spiritual. It really is. It's a humbling truth that can guide people towards greatness. If a generation was raised on the philosophy of how connected we are to the universe, how we are one of many pieces of a near incomprehensible puzzle, (and not some egotistical race placed here for a divine purpose) i think the beauty of it could drive us forwards as a humbler, kinder, more resolute species.

+JR Nicholson: Apart from all that, I have heard tell Tyson's more or less an atheist. Last I checked, mention the word atheist to the average church-lovin' "God-and-country" voter, and they will clutch their proverbial pearls, say "ohhh, what is this world comin' to, with all these godless heathens," or some similar thing, and go on some sort of crusade to push that atheist off the ticket. The Repugs tried to label Bernie Sanders an atheist just because he dared to be non-sectarian in his spiritual beliefs, rather than specifically claim any Jewish heritage he allegedly had. Because Bernie, being a sane, rational man, knew that spiritual beliefs really shouldn't matter when you're legit doing the right thing by all people. But ohhh, the religious folks had a pearl-clutching fest about that concept, adding fuel to the anti-Bernie fire, sadly. So no, I don't think Tyson would be elected, just because he is, AFAIK, an unapologetic atheist. I profess a Pagan set of beliefs, and don't necessarily agree with atheism. BUT...I will vote for an atheist faster than I'll vote for a right-wing nut job.
