He actually made a good point. The Apollo spaceships were mostly controlled by gravity alone on their way too the Moon and back, as the engine burns that changed their speed and trajectory only lasted a few minutes at the time.
@Surmoka
@Surmoka 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that was smart reasoning, I'll give him that. But if you have a ship in space, you're not interested in it drifting as gravity wants, you're interested in driving it to where you want to go. So Tyson's argument is still more realistic.
@fromnorway643
@fromnorway643 4 жыл бұрын
@@Surmoka A spaceship can exploit the gravity to take it where it wants to go. Just start the engines at a precisely calculated time, let them burn for a precisely calculated period while pointing in a precisely calculated direction, and the gravity will do the rest. When sending space probes to other planets, they can coast unpowered for months or even years after the launch from Earth, only guided by the gravity of the Sun and the planets.

Most 'scientists' are just ordinary people, who live our lives in perpetual enjoyment of discovering new things, and trying to figure them out. The scientific method, is what separates us from the suckers who believe in nonsense. Psssst...... wanna buy a bottle of Trump water? How about some Trump steaks? And don't forget to send the billionaire some of your money, because after all, he's a genius with a very good brain, so he knows how to use it better than you do. No, he wasn't right. He was using quite immature reasoning. Neil said, "the reason why it's _probably_ not aliens is, its trajectory around the sun was completely determined by gravitational forces." This is a logical statement. He's saying, this object did not behave any differently than any other inanimate object that has entered our solar system, therefore there is no reason to think that it _is_ any different, insofar as being controlled by aliens. If it _had_ behaved differently, then we might hypothesize that some other force was acting on it. So, maybe aliens. But it did not behave differently. What Stephen basically said was, "even if there's no evidence that another force was acting on it, doesn't mean that there wasn't any; maybe we just didn't see it." Yes, that is a possibility. And Neil's initial statement did leave room for that possibility. But it's a bit like saying, "hey, even if there's no evidence that 100 tiny fairies are dancing on your forehead, doesn't mean they aren't there; maybe our human eyes just can't sense them." Okay, sure. But it's up to you to provide evidence, not up to Neil to disprove. So this argument is not the "slam dunk" that Stephen and the audience seemed to think it was. It was actually quite a juvenile argument to make. If that's what Stephen thinks, then why doesn't he apply the same logic to every other mass that enters our solar system? Why are rocks and asteroids just rocks and asteroids, but this thing is a spaceship? The evidence says they behaved no differently. That is what Neil is saying.

Frank bucklys interview of avi loeb is an intelligent argumented presentation and explanation of his view with comments on the unlikeliness and or flaws of papers trying to dismiss it. The attitude avi loeb keeps showing the manner in which he speaks is the best representation of an intellectual. Unlike neil degrass Tyson , a man whose every sentence is overflowing with ridicule of others, no matter how well educated, credible, intelligent, and deserving of respect they might be.

Unfortunately for Stephen's argument, the way slingshot manoeuvres work is that you use your engines at the closest point to the gravity well, so following a ballistic path rules out a slingshot.

I mean for comedic purposes yea, it was great, but that type of argument doesn't get you very far. It's like when Phoebe asks Ross how he knows nobody put the fossils there. Shifting the burden of proof that way would be like me stating Hogwarts is real and telling you to disprove it.

"suddenly stopped following the expected gravitational path and accelerated faster than the laws of gravity would permit": It did accelerate which would be normal if it was jettisoning matter, which brought scientists wondering if it's a comet or an asteroid. "something black science man apparently did not know"... something nobody knew.
@cbutters
@cbutters 5 жыл бұрын
@Aaron Richards yes... but if you reference the date of this video... that acceleration had not yet happened. I was just pointing out that he was using our understanding of the law of gravity to prove it was not alien.... when it then did do something unexpected later on. I'm not saying it is aliens. I'm just pointing out that his main argument for why it wasn't aliens was upset.

You need to feed your self-loathing, trust me - god hates guys who don't hate themselfes.. Btw - if you plan to pray for me, keep in mind - god hates me more than he loves you - so don't make him angry or you will be punished for my sins. You know - god is as fair as allways. Neil's point isn't that it's definitely not aliens, it's that it's most likely not aliens, based on what we already know and can prove mathematically. Stephen's point is that if there's a .0001% chance that it's aliens, then we should treat it as such. They're both just having fun.
