“This was originally from an album called ‘The Story Of My Life’ that never came out, except for the title song. It was an album that Columbia wasn’t in love with, so eventually I scrapped it and waited for the next inspiration to come along. Here was a lot of personal stuff on this album, some written after the death of my father, some about our relationship. ‘Angel Above My Head’ tells my own story of trying to cope with my father’s passing and trying to remember what he told me about going on. It’s definitely a personal song that touches on a very sad nerve for me. My parents always supported me in whatever I did, whether it was music, fencing or school. I think that’s important. I miss him a lot.” - ND

Thanks for your comment Claudette. Neil certainly is on both counts. Akeeba Diamond was always proud of his son; indeed both of his sons. I remember an interview that Neil did where he mentioned that in the 60s when he was but a struggling young singer/songwriter, attending university, and helping out in his parents a dry-goods/haberdashery shop - "Diamond's" in Brooklyn, that his dad proudly displayed a photograph of Neil. He would proudly acclaim to customers that that was his son Neil and that he would one day be famous. How right he was! Best wishes, Doug

I never understood this one thing in Scandinavia, where men are said to be retired at 65! It was a very difficult time for my dad, til he found away to do community work. Men, to me are a sum total and their Best in and about , after 60. Before that boys...It is one thing I love about America, you never have to retire, if you have the health , energy, and mind. I have a slightly different view. Not being acquainted with Scandinavia, I surmise that with 65 being the retirement age, that is is not cast in stone; that if one so desires, one is able to remain in the workforce. It must come down to personal choice. I am guessing that, as a progressive society, the belief is that having worked all your working life that you are entitled to enjoy the fruits of the decades of your working life in your twilight years. Being a progressive/socialist society, the individual is valued more; their quality of life has a greater emphasis than in say, the dog eat dog aspects of the United States. Former Vice President Hurbert Humphrey - _“The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of_ _life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”_

If I am not mistaken this song was featured on a proposed album titled Story of my Life together with some classics like, Heaven can Wait, Long Nights Hold On, I'm saying I'm sorry, Moonlight Rider etc. Columbia rejected it and forced him to record some substandard stuff (by his standards) and released the album as Headed for the Future, which was and still is arguably his worst album. It is remarkable that the record label can reject what could have been one of his best albums in the '80s and get him to replace it with arguably one of his worst. All I say is that Capitol should now release the original Story of my Life in its entirety. COME ON CAPITOL.

I have the box set of Neil Diamond’s “In My Lifetime” CDs where this song was released. I like the song and the reason he wrote it so I copied it to my iPhone. The song was one of hundreds I have on my phone but rarely listened to. A few years ago on Father’s Day I drove down to the cemetery where my father is buried. I said a prayer, told him I missed him and got back in my car. I noticed that my phone was completely dead. I didn’t think it was that low. I plugged it into the car outlet to charge it. A couple of minutes later the phone started playing “Angel Above My Head." I had not been listening to this song before or any song at all, yet that one started playing for no reason. Or maybe there was a reason.

Damn you Doug....how'd you ship a crate of onions to my house because I can't stop crying and it has to be those onions. This is not only appropriate for me to share with Ernie, it is resonating with me as well. I lost my dad 6 days before my 37th birthday and that was 24 years ago. I still haven't gotten over it, mostly because there were so many things I would have loved to have sat down with him and asked about his youth, etc. I know he worked hard all of his life, and when mom came up pregnant with me, they actually thought she had a tumor but the doctor explained to them that the "growth" would be gone after 9 months time. I always heard how happy she was, but I had nothing in common with her. I was a pure tomboy and if I could get dirty or bloody, have torn jeans or anything that had to do with the great outdoors, I was happy. I drove my dad nuts begging for a motorcycle and I finally got it when I was 14. I never heard the words "I love you" or "I'm proud of you", and whenever I could be with him and help him with anything on our farm, I was out there with him. More stories of my life when ND's songs helped get me through being so lonely when all I wanted was to know I was wanted and loved. I'm going to share this for sure. God bless you Doug!!
