The Last Waltz was a perfect vehical to demonstate the natural and unique power of Neil Diamond's and Van Morrison's voices beyond what many were used to just coming out of their radios. Both of their performances leave anyone with the realization that these guys just had it, and had it in spades.

So I was at the Last Waltz and I gotta say, the audience was more than bewildered when Diamond took the stage. In fact this song fell flat, while the Winterland crowd just kinda talked through it. The audience's reaction on the film track was clearly 'juiced' . No slight to Diamond, whose songs pave our nostalgic radio waves, but it felt in the audience that night like an oversized sequined bull had come into a chinashop.

I dont really think most men in the celebrity world or music world (except for ELVIS PRESLEY) are good looking, but Diamond was definately for me an outstanding good-looking guy & with that voice that is so, so different from anyone before him & anyone after him. ❤❤❤

I am born on 1969. For me this singing and song with Neil Diamond is my best taste of moments in this film/koncert. I love the slow tempo in the song. Someone could say; why not invite the king of rock n roll Elvis to the show for fun to just one song. Like another surprise. The audience, we all and Martin Scorsese, Bill Graham and many more would love it. The excuse / arguments could be many. Elvis would say yes and he died while this film was cut and edit. Some story we missed. Maybe Robbie or Marty tought of it. Van Morrison was very good to pump up the volume, crowd and The Band on the end of his song. The Band members seams also very happy on their farvel consert evening in pictures with great moments behind and on the stage with a lot of smiles, rock n roll and nice stories. Garth Hodson is up in the sky for now, but his tallent was sky high long before. He's above all tallent. Funny true story how he comited The Band. Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, poor Manuel The Band the best singer and the audience could be used and shown more in this film. Easy for me to say some 40 years after. This film project was big and complicated, long recording and editing, went out fantastic historical and show us an understanding of who we humans hounest are; about life, music, love, hunger, showbus., behind the stage, fame, lifestyle, stories, etc. Personal i like are the drummer Levon Helm and the basist Rick Danko so pure style, very tallented they are, they seams so cool and straight foreward. Neil Young was very polite, cool and personal. Robbie Robertson, who is still alive, perhaps did some mistakes along the planning and seams to own the stage, but he also did a great job starting this proces and great film project with Matry and others and he wrote many good songs. I am just a new fan. RIP all 4 members in The Band. Great movie. All or almost all the invited guest stars are still alive, and that tell us something about surving, lifestyle and hard work to the top. Many world famous tallent crased at the age of 27. The hippie time before and after was hard on many nice people. And I still dislike 99% of all hungry animals journalists. It's nice and wise to watch this film many times and in different ways, to study The Band story and music on the internet. Thanks to all involved that millions of people and world wide generations can ses this true story. I just found a dvd from 2002, and a new great story and chapter open up my mind. The funniest and most freaking moment on the evening koncert and in person himself is the special guest, the dute, the unik pussycat, Mr. Silverman Bob Dylan with a surprising strong personality. His brand is to sing his own tune and voice and to behave on his own way. The smalest man with the greatest ego. He wrote more songs than any others. Bob Dylan is so much Bob Dylan, for some people too much. He is so complete original and a funny joker. Like a homeless rat in voice and vision in abstact ways. He dont give a dam what others say, write or think about him. That is rare to see and very cool. He managed to sing so perfectly well without being perfect unlike anyone. And he love it and he smiles and shows it. What an subject and a great alter ego. Watch the great star Neil Young at the last song all together the stars standing on stage, he's smiling, impressed and staring at this hot shot Bob Dylan, who is stealing the show at the end. All invited guest sing only one song, except Bob Dylan singing 3 song. This true freak of a dramaqueen would not even tell anyone for sure if he would join this concert. Popped up some 45 min. before making fun and drama backstage asking staff about what hat to wear and if the feder should be on hat or not. So they tell in the dokumentary. Bob Dylan, I saw in Roskilde Festival 1994 Denmark. We are lucky to have such tallent and so many songs. He is a very special person and he is so very much Bob Dylan, saying: "May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth And see the light surrounding you May you always be courageous Stand upright and be strong May you stay forever young May you stay forever young". ♥️ 🇫🇴 🤘

This is the one piece from that thing, that amazing event so long ago that can never occur again, that I will always watch, and hear, again, and again. Snotty Neil Young addressed him as Neil Sedaka, the others in the Band didn’t want him on the show, like everything always went for me and you in high school, but Robbie stood up for him, being the stand-up guy he’s always been, got him on the lineup, and Neil Diamond just blew out the lights, for me and for many others in the audience and ever after, the highlight of that stellar night.

Bullsh**! absolutely astute remark by Young ,failing only in that he was as improbable a guest there as Neil Sedaka - but lacked Sedaka's songwriting ability. The sole reason for him there, was to promote his work done with Robbie. I was at the Last Waltz, and the reaction in the crowd to him on stage was a downer moment, the worst moment of an incredibly long wonderful night. The crowd essentially ignored him, the film applause is not the real reaction, but 'juiced' after his Robbie Robertson credited song was done - mostly the crowd just talked thru his performance. not to say i didn't enjoy Diamonds radio play thru the years.

me and my buddies listen and watch the last waltz at every house party we have. whether its at a buddies house at a different college, or at our home town or ipods we always have on the last waltz. it's funny because everyone who knows us just expect it to come on at some point in the drunken evening!!!! and when new comers watch they don't get it at first but when we all start singing and getting weird with it they understand. what an amzing movie and artists!!!! peace

Love the movie, but it would not have been the same with out this song, man could rock a jump suit, and his songs are always pure energy.

Most definitely a classic in my opinion.. many people just don’t give him the credit he deserves in the music industry., he is always been a huge player in the music industry for many years..

At one point he was the highest paid solo singer. Probably the 70s & 80s. Roy Orbison was brilliant too, but both different types of music. Both the best.💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

I’ve loved Neil since the mid sixties when I was a teenager, ever since Solitary Man. I lived near the Greek Theatre, couldn’t afford to the go inside but we would listen sitting in the hills behind the Greek - Hot August Night. I had most of his albums. When I was in college in the early seventies my roommates would make fun of me for being a big fan. I had never heard or seen The Last Waltz until a few weeks ago (May 2022). I only watched it because, to my surprise, Neil Diamond performed on it. What a great song and performance - pure class - far better in my opinion than Neil Young and Bob Dylan.
