I'm 60 and my brother is 57 with Crones Disease, and has had about 16 or more surgeries removing his intestines, as long as he lives, I will make sure his bills are all paid ,as he can't work . He's no burden to me, He's my brother. Our parents are gone and he's all I have left of my family here in Ohio. If I have a dollar , then he has 50 cents. This song brings me to tears .I Love You brother........

50 years ago, this year, I carried my best friend from the spot where he died to the LZ when the Crew Chief asked me if I needed help. I remembered some years before seeing a poster about Boys Town and so I answered:" No thank you, he ain't heavy, he's my brother." Just think about him every day.

2010 my uncle Lonnie Dimas Jr. Died at the age of 69. He was in the hospital, and he had told me, " he was ready to go. I told him ,it was ok." In the car, this song, "He ant heavy, he's my brother." Started playing, l started crying. Thinking of Jr. I'd heard this song a thousand times but today it had a personal feeling, to me. I didn't go home for 6 hrs. That's when l finely stopped crying. Our parents are deceased and I'm living with my brother who has a terrible case of Bipolar Disorder which makes him abusive and cruel sometimes. . Im 700 this song came out in popularity during the civil rights movement. My uncle arranged its music for his entire marching band of the university of Minnesota to play on the football field at halftime. We always became somber when its message resounding. Actually it refers to the brotherhood of all mankind. Of course it was wartime then, soldiers were carrying their injured fellow soldiers drafted with them in Viet Nam. The word "brother" penetrates in our hearts reaching across race boundaries & differences. Not necessarily a sibling.

I am so sorry for your loss. My husband (not my brother) died waiting for a heart transplant. Many friends have complemented me for working 3 jobs to pay our bills &Pom after him. It was easy I loved him & wanted desperately for him to live. This was in 2992, he was 39 & I was 32. I remarried but of course never stopped loving him. This song used to make me cry like a baby/ sometimes it still can. I usually here the Hollies version, heard this version in a movie today. Though I am a huge Neil Diamond fan, I had forgotten he recorded this, too. Hearing part of the song in the background of a movie wasn’t enough. I played this at my brothers funeral, he was my best friend my strength my joy my all. He gave me a ring and told me that if the time came to sell it to do so but i said i never would. I was 12 in 1972 when my brother and I were in a WALKATHON for (the boys home) . I became tired after 16 miles of heat and fatigue. My brother put me on his back and when people asked if he was tired he'd say "He's not heavy he's my brother". Written by Neil Diamond. Made famous by The Hollies. In a perfect world, I should have liked to have heard the Carpenters cover it as well. All were good, don't get me wrong, it's just that it is a very sad song and Neil Diamond and the Carpenters were the only entertainers who could bring me to tears with their sad songs such as "Shilo," and "Goodbye To Love." I think Karen would have done it justice as well.
