What a band and a great singer. This song still brings a tear to my eye and I remember my brother who was born with spina bifida. He was given six weeks to live so mum and dad brought him home to be with his family. His family and his determination kept him alive for 12 years. He could not feed himself, walk or talk. No control over bodily functions but still managed a smile for those that cared for him. For 12 years he either laid on his bed or someone cradled him. He loved to go for a drive in the car when he was placed on a bed in the back of the family station wagon, he always new he would get an icecream at the end of the journey. He was not heavy or a burden on his family he was my brother, and I will never forget him.

Love your story, so touching sir! I have many physical ailments and problems now in my age being 52 now and i know my own father who is 72 is my big brother also who feels that i am not too heavy for him since he has taken care of me so Much after going through four different surgeries on my right ankle and knee and this song really speaks volumes to me of the great example of being Christ like he has shown me all these past 14 years. Thanks for your post here

My 2 brothers and i drove far away to a ranch in Rosarito, Mexico, up in the mountains, we were in our 20's i already had two children that i took with me. The restrooms were outside in a hole with a little roof...water needed to be carried from a well down the hill. It was to help my brother Rodolfo to clean from using morphine. My older brother Benjamin carried him to the restroom on his back at anytime Rodolfo needed to go..he was weak and was not able to walk...i asked my brother Benjamin, isn't he too heavy for you (Benjamin was also tiny) he responded to me, no, I'll do it, he is my brother. God i cry everytime i hear this song. My mom was already gone. And it was a successful trip Rodolfo is now 67 , Benjamin is 70 and me 64. Lord is great, ❤

My brother is 10 years older than me and he served in Vietnam. Needless to say, when he came back home, his life was not easy. Both of our parents died when I was a baby and he was a 10 year old little boy. My aunt and uncle raised all 6 of my siblings along with there 8 children so we are truly blessed. I am so thankful that inspite of all of my brother's short comings, I chose him as my best man in my wedding. My brother suffered from a stroke and kidney failure when he was 45 years old. I was there for him every step of the way. His burdens weren't too heavy for me because he's my brother! Tears are flowing from my eyes now as I listen to this song of my childhood because I'm still missing my dear brother who got his wings in the year 2000. He was an amazing and extremely kind man and he really loved his little brother as much as I loved him ❤️. Rest peacefully Herman!! 🙏🏾

I believe that cause you just don’t know when you say goodbye if you’re ever going to see that person again I’m 68 years old and I’m seeing this because then I wouldn’t have thought about this but now, we live in now is so true beautiful song, and Alan Clark singing it makes it even more beautiful memories

@@jerirollins414 I can confirm as a French speaking individual, I always kiss and salute my loved ones as if it was the last time I might be seeing them. The son of a friend got mad at his mom after she drove him for a 5 hours road travel. When he got out of the car, he said he hated her and left. She would die less then 15 minutes later in a frontal crash with a truck... How can life not be unbearable after that? Our loved ones are never a burden. Sadly, we often discover it once they have passed away.

This is one of the main reasons why I don’t like to be at odds with my friends and family. I always think I’m gonna be sorry probably for saying this and worry about it and then luckily everything‘s all right. You just never know and especially in this day and age the world has changed so much we were lucky to grow up with the music that we grew up with, they don’t make it like that anymore. I lost my younger brother in 2007.He had been dealing with drugs and alcohol for a long time. My family didn't have the patience to try to help him, but I was always there for him, no matter what. He finally decided it was time to quit and was in a rehab when he passed . We were on an outing together when it happened. After his death I was using music to help with my grief and found this song. I took it as my tribute to him.I play it quite often when I am thinking of him .

My father was a drunk who beat my mother and took off when i was 15 and he died alone, pneumonia was the official reason but really the booze did him in. He sort me out and came into the sports bar i was working at and tried to say sorry, i was 21-22 and so angry at him and basically threatened to knock his head off. That was the last time i saw my dad. I'm 37 and iv'e been married for 11 years now and have 2 kid's of my own, i can understand some of the pressures he faced by having to provide for a family. I'm sorry dad i can't forgive you for what you did, but i'm also sorry i didn't give you chance to talk to me and even though you were not the best i should have been the better man and let you have your say. Thank you stranger for reading my written thought.

I hope that you will let go of any burden of guilt or regret. The fact that you have written what you wrote about your father and your family struggle, indicates that you learned from the worst part of your life. Even if you had listened to your father that night it may not have changed anything about either of your lives but the fact that it makes you more tolerant of the stresses you have as a father means that he basically named you Sue. I hope you understand and have a chuckle at my reference to the Johnny Cash song. Your words were a gift to me tonight & living a happy life is the best gift you can give to both of your parents.

I was fortunate enough to visit him the Sunday prior and we had a lovely chat and I got his photo album and took him down memory lane which he certainly appreciated. His wish was to live his last days at home with his wonderful wife and other family on his wife’s side. The hospital that he had been attending lent the family a hospital bed for as long as he needed it which was made his last few days very comfortable. This song was played at the funeral first and was so applicable and set a celebration mood for the whole service so Thank you to to the HOLLIES as the day was shared in a happy way

My son wasn’t expected to live one day…today, he is 38 years old! He is like an infant, non verbal, cortically blind, spastic quadriplegic with severe scoliosis affecting his internal organs that are twisted. Uncontrolled seizures, jg tube fed and just a few months ago, he got a tracheotomy. He is the oldest of 6 and all of my children have always put him before themselves, as have I. Quite simply, he’s the best thing that ever happened to my family… for the 4 generations that are here, we know how blessed we are. He’s happy, lights up a room with squeeky toys and noise makers… simply put, a gift. I think he was about 5 when I realized how significant this song is to my family as his younger brother at that time, their relationship as it is defined by this song. 4 more children later( all adults now) and it’s the song I’m choosing for them when he passes away…. I’ve been carting it in my heart well over 3 decades…. Ty for such an amazing and perfect song.

And when light fills the room, the child is filled with darkness. He knows that every time this happens he’s moved just a little closer to that darkness outside. The darkness outside is what the old folks have been talking about. It’s what they’ve come from. It’s what they endure. The child knows that they won’t talk any more because if he knows too much about what’s happened to them, he’ll know too much too soon, about what’s going to happen to him.” ― James Baldwin, Sonny's Blues

One of our instructors said “he ain’t heavy, he’s your brother” which we thought was humourous at the time. Little did I realize that decades later I would be the one to help a guy I did Basic with battle PTSD. This song means way more to me today than it did back then. True to possibly the most underrated vocalist..certainly of the decades 60 70 .the meaning of the song can be put to every individual situation..also just one of those where everything hit just perfect. And all because of a little Scottish girl carried her malformed younger brother to market miles from her village with effortless strength and tenacity the vendors were taken aback. That is so sad. I have had many losses in my life. I don't know if I will ever be over some of them. It is hard. He is in your heart. He will always be with you. It is nice that your brother was your hero. So many people spend their lives apart. Not thinking that someday their family and friends wont be with them. You two had the love. Hopefully others will read your comment and think and want to make the effort to spend time with their family. There's too much fighting that goes on. There needs to be love.

The song was particularly applicable to the Vietnam era, where servicemen were literally putting their wounded buddies on their backs, and carrying them out of harm. I think of this song every time I see the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC which shows a wounded soldier on his comrade's back. I was fortunate to have missed VietNam; I was 18 and had a draft number, but the war ended. Six years later, however, I was commissioned in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps, and served 20 years. In today's world faced with a COVID-19 crisis, I see this song applicable to the dispute going on between upstate NY and downstate NY regarding sharing of ventilators. Given the shortage of ventilators, we must help our brothers where the disease is most prevalent.

For me I drew no link at all to the Vietnam war. It was written and recorded during that time yet for me it’s about loving and caring for others who are unlike ourselves. Regardless of race, colour, creed, or gender. I’m Canadian and a few years to young to have entered in that war which many Canadians volunteered. And died.

I pray that you find the peace that passes all understanding……I lost my 48 yr old brother to alcoholism in 2017. I know he’s with Jesus…..he just couldn’t make that decision to stop drinking……he always said he wouldn’t stop it……but it stopped him. God bless you in your life❤️

Dear Sir, we have many missing & deceased. The most horrific thing is the criminals and crazy people who are living nice lives under the victims name's & associated fraudulent identity. There's a story from WW2 about the survivor's of the concentration camps. A man & woman were alone and couldn't find any family or friends. So...o, the man said to the woman.. I am alone and you are alone...So, can we be alone together? So, this is how it began.. I believe that is how he proposed to her. May I suggest music as it's the International Language? Dancing In The Sky, a song by Los Secretos/tu something or other I can't remember it right now, Kyu Sakamoto..I look up when I walk so that the Tear's don't fall... Leather On My Shoe's.

We did play this at my brother Kenneth's funeral, he died 08/06/1979. He was on the way home from watching movies with friends, and drunk kids ran him off the road and his truck flipped over on top of him. Today happens to be the 37th anniversary of his death.

I was standing outside my uncle’s funeral talking to my dad, saying goodbye to everyone. He was holding my uncle’s ashes, which he had been holding for a while at that point. So, thinking he might want some help, I honestly asked him, “Is that heavy?” Without missing a beat, as if he had been waiting for the set up all day, my dad replied, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother!” I laughed hysterically. Seriously, true story. Think about that probably once a month.
