What a band and a great singer. This song still brings a tear to my eye and I remember my brother who was born with spina bifida. He was given six weeks to live so mum and dad brought him home to be with his family. His family and his determination kept him alive for 12 years. He could not feed himself, walk or talk. No control over bodily functions but still managed a smile for those that cared for him. For 12 years he either laid on his bed or someone cradled him. He loved to go for a drive in the car when he was placed on a bed in the back of the family station wagon, he always new he would get an icecream at the end of the journey. He was not heavy or a burden on his family he was my brother, and I will never forget him.

Love your story, so touching sir! I have many physical ailments and problems now in my age being 52 now and i know my own father who is 72 is my big brother also who feels that i am not too heavy for him since he has taken care of me so Much after going through four different surgeries on my right ankle and knee and this song really speaks volumes to me of the great example of being Christ like he has shown me all these past 14 years. Thanks for your post here

My 2 brothers and i drove far away to a ranch in Rosarito, Mexico, up in the mountains, we were in our 20's i already had two children that i took with me. The restrooms were outside in a hole with a little roof...water needed to be carried from a well down the hill. It was to help my brother Rodolfo to clean from using morphine. My older brother Benjamin carried him to the restroom on his back at anytime Rodolfo needed to go..he was weak and was not able to walk...i asked my brother Benjamin, isn't he too heavy for you (Benjamin was also tiny) he responded to me, no, I'll do it, he is my brother. God i cry everytime i hear this song. My mom was already gone. And it was a successful trip Rodolfo is now 67 , Benjamin is 70 and me 64. Lord is great, ❤

Lost my brother to suicide in 2014. I can remember way back in 1981, he had a beautiful Ford car and we were driving back home to Cape Breton from Edmonton, and this song came on and he was singing it to his friend in the front seat, pointing to me in the backseat. Brings tears to my eyes now to hear this song.

I was homeless and found an apartment. For four months I slept on the streets and nearly died. One day I heard this song along the way and broke down crying. A man gave me two-hundred dollars cash. He walked away and this song chronicles that whole experience. It is one of the greatest tales of caring about someone regardless of color, class or anything.

So my dad passed away leaving me behind with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. I'm the first born and quite overwhelmed of caring, providing for them. Talking about perfect timing, I heard this song for the first time and it brought me to tears. I told myself they ain't heavy. 20 years later we're all grown ups now and the youngest is still in college. How fast time flies.

My brother is 10 years older than me and he served in Vietnam. Needless to say, when he came back home, his life was not easy. Both of our parents died when I was a baby and he was a 10 year old little boy. My aunt and uncle raised all 6 of my siblings along with there 8 children so we are truly blessed. I am so thankful that inspite of all of my brother's short comings, I chose him as my best man in my wedding. My brother suffered from a stroke and kidney failure when he was 45 years old. I was there for him every step of the way. His burdens weren't too heavy for me because he's my brother! Tears are flowing from my eyes now as I listen to this song of my childhood because I'm still missing my dear brother who got his wings in the year 2000. He was an amazing and extremely kind man and he really loved his little brother as much as I loved him ❤️. Rest peacefully Herman!! 🙏🏾

He lived 3 years and finished his 1962 Pontiac and his pall bearers were in it behind the hearse at is funeral. I still miss him and cry when I hear this song. I've been a foster carer for my little half-brother for 10 years. He's in his teens now and can be very challenging. People sometimes tell me that I've done enough for him and to live my own life. But I'll never give up on him. He's starting to do really well now. He does well at school, he has a part time job which he works hard at. It's been worth it to me. One day he will appreciate it and we will be good friends. I love him like he's my own son.

I have another relative whom I have so loved who has blasted out of the water as a scummy racist for having voted leave. Now we are at some sort of crossroads of humanity and I have lost both. @@jerirollins414 I can confirm as a French speaking individual, I always kiss and salute my loved ones as if it was the last time I might be seeing them. The son of a friend got mad at his mom after she drove him for a 5 hours road travel. When he got out of the car, he said he hated her and left. She would die less then 15 minutes later in a frontal crash with a truck... How can life not be unbearable after that? Our loved ones are never a burden. Sadly, we often discover it once they have passed away.

This is one of the main reasons why I don’t like to be at odds with my friends and family. I always think I’m gonna be sorry probably for saying this and worry about it and then luckily everything‘s all right. You just never know and especially in this day and age the world has changed so much we were lucky to grow up with the music that we grew up with, they don’t make it like that anymore. My father was a drunk who beat my mother and took off when i was 15 and he died alone, pneumonia was the official reason but really the booze did him in. He sort me out and came into the sports bar i was working at and tried to say sorry, i was 21-22 and so angry at him and basically threatened to knock his head off. That was the last time i saw my dad. I'm 37 and iv'e been married for 11 years now and have 2 kid's of my own, i can understand some of the pressures he faced by having to provide for a family. I'm sorry dad i can't forgive you for what you did, but i'm also sorry i didn't give you chance to talk to me and even though you were not the best i should have been the better man and let you have your say. I hope that you will let go of any burden of guilt or regret. The fact that you have written what you wrote about your father and your family struggle, indicates that you learned from the worst part of your life. Even if you had listened to your father that night it may not have changed anything about either of your lives but the fact that it makes you more tolerant of the stresses you have as a father means that he basically named you Sue. I hope you understand and have a chuckle at my reference to the Johnny Cash song. Your words were a gift to me tonight & living a happy life is the best gift you can give to both of your parents.

I was fortunate enough to visit him the Sunday prior and we had a lovely chat and I got his photo album and took him down memory lane which he certainly appreciated. His wish was to live his last days at home with his wonderful wife and other family on his wife’s side. The hospital that he had been attending lent the family a hospital bed for as long as he needed it which was made his last few days very comfortable. This song was played at the funeral first and was so applicable and set a celebration mood for the whole service so Thank you to to the HOLLIES as the day was shared in a happy way

My son wasn’t expected to live one day…today, he is 38 years old! He is like an infant, non verbal, cortically blind, spastic quadriplegic with severe scoliosis affecting his internal organs that are twisted. Uncontrolled seizures, jg tube fed and just a few months ago, he got a tracheotomy. He is the oldest of 6 and all of my children have always put him before themselves, as have I. Quite simply, he’s the best thing that ever happened to my family… for the 4 generations that are here, we know how blessed we are. He’s happy, lights up a room with squeeky toys and noise makers… simply put, a gift. I think he was about 5 when I realized how significant this song is to my family as his younger brother at that time, their relationship as it is defined by this song. 4 more children later( all adults now) and it’s the song I’m choosing for them when he passes away…. I’ve been carting it in my heart well over 3 decades…. Ty for such an amazing and perfect song.

It was a horrible time for my family especially a few a few months before this happened my wife gave birth to my son . He was my sons godfather and he always thought I would not pick him to be the godfather . I told him you were my best man , my best friend and you will be my sons godfather . I miss him so much and sometimes it still haunts me because he died the day before my 1st wedding anniversary . I was so proud of my little brother and to this day I miss him so freaking much .

amen, brother...reminds me of this quote: “In a moment someone will get up and turn on the light. Then the old folks will remember the children and they won’t talk anymore that day. And when light fills the room, the child is filled with darkness. He knows that every time this happens he’s moved just a little closer to that darkness outside. The darkness outside is what the old folks have been talking about. It’s what they’ve come from. It’s what they endure. The child knows that they won’t talk any more because if he knows too much about what’s happened to them, he’ll know too much too soon, about what’s going to happen to him.” ― James Baldwin, Sonny's Blues

When I did Basic Training in 1977, during PT we were taking turns carrying our partners with the fireman’s carry. One of our instructors said “he ain’t heavy, he’s your brother” which we thought was humourous at the time. Little did I realize that decades later I would be the one to help a guy I did Basic with battle PTSD. This song means way more to me today than it did back then. He’s a great guy and we went through a lot together…he’s my brother, not biologically but by choice.

True to possibly the most underrated vocalist..certainly of the decades 60 70 .the meaning of the song can be put to every individual situation..also just one of those where everything hit just perfect. And all because of a little Scottish girl carried her malformed younger brother to market miles from her village with effortless strength and tenacity the vendors were taken aback. Inquiring..the barely teen girl looking up at the men and said..he ain't heavy sirs ..he's my brother. Century's old Scottish tales.

The song was particularly applicable to the Vietnam era, where servicemen were literally putting their wounded buddies on their backs, and carrying them out of harm. I think of this song every time I see the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC which shows a wounded soldier on his comrade's back. I was fortunate to have missed VietNam; I was 18 and had a draft number, but the war ended. Six years later, however, I was commissioned in the U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps, and served 20 years. In today's world faced with a COVID-19 crisis, I see this song applicable to the dispute going on between upstate NY and downstate NY regarding sharing of ventilators. Given the shortage of ventilators, we must help our brothers where the disease is most prevalent.

I am alone and you are alone...So, can we be alone together? So, this is how it began.. I believe that is how he proposed to her. May I suggest music as it's the International Language? I was standing outside my uncle’s funeral talking to my dad, saying goodbye to everyone. He was holding my uncle’s ashes, which he had been holding for a while at that point. So, thinking he might want some help, I honestly asked him, “Is that heavy?” Without missing a beat, as if he had been waiting for the set up all day, my dad replied, “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother!” I laughed hysterically. Seriously, true story. Think about that probably once a month.

This song touches the very depth of my soul and brings tears to my eyes. They just don't make'em like this anymore.
