I was homeless and found an apartment. For four months I slept on the streets and nearly died. One day I heard this song along the way and broke down crying. A man gave me two-hundred dollars cash. He walked away and this song chronicles that whole experience. It is one of the greatest tales of caring about someone regardless of color, class or anything.

Lost my brother to suicide in 2014. I can remember way back in 1981, he had a beautiful Ford car and we were driving back home to Cape Breton from Edmonton, and this song came on and he was singing it to his friend in the front seat, pointing to me in the backseat. Brings tears to my eyes now to hear this song.

My 2 brothers and i drove far away to a ranch in Rosarito, Mexico, up in the mountains, we were in our 20's i already had two children that i took with me. The restrooms were outside in a hole with a little roof...water needed to be carried from a well down the hill. It was to help my brother Rodolfo to clean from using morphine. My older brother Benjamin carried him to the restroom on his back at anytime Rodolfo needed to go..he was weak and was not able to walk...i asked my brother Benjamin, isn't he too heavy for you (Benjamin was also tiny) he responded to me, no, I'll do it, he is my brother. God i cry everytime i hear this song. My mom was already gone. And it was a successful trip Rodolfo is now 67 , Benjamin is 70 and me 64. Lord is great, ❤

What a band and a great singer. This song still brings a tear to my eye and I remember my brother who was born with spina bifida. He was given six weeks to live so mum and dad brought him home to be with his family. His family and his determination kept him alive for 12 years. He could not feed himself, walk or talk. No control over bodily functions but still managed a smile for those that cared for him. For 12 years he either laid on his bed or someone cradled him. He loved to go for a drive in the car when he was placed on a bed in the back of the family station wagon, he always new he would get an icecream at the end of the journey. He was not heavy or a burden on his family he was my brother, and I will never forget him.

My father was a drunk who beat my mother and took off when i was 15 and he died alone, pneumonia was the official reason but really the booze did him in. He sort me out and came into the sports bar i was working at and tried to say sorry, i was 21-22 and so angry at him and basically threatened to knock his head off. That was the last time i saw my dad. I'm 37 and iv'e been married for 11 years now and have 2 kid's of my own, i can understand some of the pressures he faced by having to provide for a family. I'm sorry dad i can't forgive you for what you did, but i'm also sorry i didn't give you chance to talk to me and even though you were not the best i should have been the better man and let you have your say. I hope that you will let go of any burden of guilt or regret. The fact that you have written what you wrote about your father and your family struggle, indicates that you learned from the worst part of your life. Even if you had listened to your father that night it may not have changed anything about either of your lives but the fact that it makes you more tolerant of the stresses you have as a father means that he basically named you Sue. I hope you understand and have a chuckle at my reference to the Johnny Cash song. Your words were a gift to me tonight & living a happy life is the best gift you can give to both of your parents.

My brother is 10 years older than me and he served in Vietnam. Needless to say, when he came back home, his life was not easy. Both of our parents died when I was a baby and he was a 10 year old little boy. My aunt and uncle raised all 6 of my siblings along with there 8 children so we are truly blessed. I am so thankful that inspite of all of my brother's short comings, I chose him as my best man in my wedding. My brother suffered from a stroke and kidney failure when he was 45 years old. I was there for him every step of the way. His burdens weren't too heavy for me because he's my brother! Tears are flowing from my eyes now as I listen to this song of my childhood because I'm still missing my dear brother who got his wings in the year 2000. When I did Basic Training in 1977, during PT we were taking turns carrying our partners with the fireman’s carry. One of our instructors said “he ain’t heavy, he’s your brother” which we thought was humourous at the time. Little did I realize that decades later I would be the one to help a guy I did Basic with battle PTSD. This song means way more to me today than it did back then. He’s a great guy and we went through a lot together…he’s my brother, not biologically but by choice.

But I'll never give up on him. He's starting to do really well now. He does well at school, he has a part time job which he works hard at. It's been worth it to me. So my dad passed away leaving me behind with 4 brothers and 5 sisters. I'm the first born and quite overwhelmed of caring, providing for them. Talking about perfect timing, I heard this song for the first time and it brought me to tears. I told myself they ain't heavy. 20 years later we're all grown ups now and the youngest is still in college. How fast time flies.

When I was 20yrs old just gave birth to my second son abandoned by my husband, there stood children service trying to sign away my baby for adoption, he was a beautiful baby, child service had a social worker who wanted him bad, my sister played this song knowing how much I listened to music, I gave her the paper back said I can raise my kids, now grown up, he is a wonderful Christian, good father, husband&son this song woke me up, i am so glad that my sister played this, I grew up that day and never regretted my decision

I lost my older brother 2 years ago in November to lung cancer I miss him so much. He actually died on my.birthday ‘. I was fortunate enough to visit him the Sunday prior and we had a lovely chat and I got his photo album and took him down memory lane which he certainly appreciated. His wish was to live his last days at home with his wonderful wife and other family on his wife’s side. The hospital that he had been attending lent the family a hospital bed for as long as he needed it which was made his last few days very comfortable. This song was played at the funeral first and was so applicable and set a celebration mood for the whole service so Thank you to to the HOLLIES as the day was shared in a happy way

It literally does mean what it says. The story is from Boystown and a priest Father Flanigan. A young boy was carrying his brother on his shoulders and the priest asked him if he was too heavy for him to carry and the little boy said, "No father, he's not heavy, he's my brother". True story. This song popped into my mind this morning when I got a text from my friend telling me that God will bless me for what I am doing for my brother. I'm 75, the youngest of nine children, of which only four are still alive. My 84 year old brother is now in a 24-hour senior care center, which my decision to return to work is paying for. Someone had to take on the responsibility to pay for my brother's nursing home. That someone is me. "He ain't heavy. He's my brother." God is good. His amazing grace is overflowing.🙏🪷

But my eldest Son can’t seem to get on his feet independently or keep a job. Every time he breaks up with a girlfriend, he lands on my youngest Son’s doorstep and my Son takes him in.
