Honestly Neil is one of the greatest drummers of all time. His death sent shock waves through the music world. No one knew he was sick. It sucks he's gone and it's awful he died of cancer. But if you can find a video of his life story. I think it's easier to find peace in his Passing. The guy lost a wife and a daughter within 2 years of each other. As hard as that was for him he still found peace in music and his crazy adventures in his trips around the globe on his BMW Bike. The man is a legend and legends never Die. Neil and Rush will be missed. One of the greatest trios of all time.

The Drum Master --Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business." I read a Neil story years ago that I've never forgotten. Neil would ride his bike between gigs. So Neil is making his way across Africa, stopping in the villages along th he way to immerse himself in the culture. He stops in one village, where a village elder and a tourist are playing native drums. Neil said the tourist was clueless and the elder was over dealing with him. Neil politely asked if he could sit in. He was genuine in his request because he truly wanted to learn from the elder. Within just a few seconds of jamming with Neil, the elder smiled, closed his eyes and they played for hours. Neil said that they barely spoke at all, but it was one of the most important conversations of his life...the conversion of music and joy! RIP Professor.

What makes this solo so fascinating are the different types of rhythm, this solo takes us on. it really tells a story. there's African, world, big-band, free-form, rock and groove music. every sound you hear is played live. No triggers. there have been better technical drummers than Neil as he happily admitted, but few as good at drum-composition. Aside from losing him to such s devastating disease, I get most upset that he never had the opportunity to see either of his daughters grow in to the women they would have or will become. I had seen Rush 49 times from 1982 when I was 12 all the way through the final tour at 45. that's a lot of life lived and it was ALWAYS a privilege to see the boys and what they were up to.

What I always thought was the most impressive thing about Neil is that he STUDIED the drums and drummers. I have watched several interviews about him and he talks about going to spend time with other drummers to learn things from them...not just current drummers but from master drummers from the 60's...always to learn or refocus himself on what he was doing and where he was going with his musical career. He was the professor and I hope he is not the last. But for my lifetime, he will always be the best.

How a drummer's brain works fascinates me. How many people can have their hands/arms/legs and feet doing different things at the same time..... in a rhythmic order? When they play, they look insane....but heck, they even throw in a twirl of their sticks and find a beat with their head so I'd guess that they must have a very orderly brain to do all of that at the same time. RIP, Mr. Peart.... thank you for sharing your talent and music with us. Take care, Bre....I enjoyed it.... be well. Peace.

Speaking as someone who's played the drums for the better part of 40 years, it doesn't come easy. It takes countless hours of practice to achieve even an incremental improvement in your playing. One master drummer, named Dave Weckl (you should REALLY check him out. He is MIND BLOWING) said he practiced on average 9 hours a day, every day. His playing shows it. You can watch a video of his from 20 years ago and watch one from today and see that he is still improving.
