Dickie Bird was an eccentric personality and a top class umpire. This combination earned the affection and respect of players and cricket crowds alike throughout his career as a first class and test match umpire. In today's cricket environment, when umpires are subjected to the relentless and remorse scrutiny by TV replays, Dickie Bird - always a cautious granter of L.B.W. decisions - would probably have fared less well. We should all be grateful to have seen and enjoyed him in action when we did. He was a character. Cricket today could do with more of those !

The greatest of cricket men who never forgets his roots, whenever I've seen him he's always had a word. Would that some of today's players show the same humility as Dickie Bird.

Dickie Bird's last test match was the one in which our school hero Ganguly, scored his Debut century. I am still thrilled about it 23 years later! DICKIE U ARE THE BEST. May you come back to Life and Legalise DRS for All Doubts whatsoever!

By Jove, I remember this programme very well. I was just twenty six at the time. Dickie is a contemporary of my father and his cousin Janet and is also a Christian! Cricket has always been my favourite game - the sweet sound of leather on willow!

There was a time before the introduction of neutral umpires when umpiring blunders often marred important cricket events. Good umpires were few and far between consequently credibility of umpires was at a low point and accusations of cheating and foul play were rife. Only English umpires stood out, they were easily the best and most impartial and Dickie Bird was in a league of his own a paragon of excellence, he was twice as good as anybody else.

Good comment and umpiring of international matches in England is now far worse than it was before the introduction of neutrals

One of the great English umpires , David constant was another and I believe Peter Willey is another although unfortunately in the later case we never got to see him umpire test matches in England because of the neutral umpire ruling , which to my mind is to the detriment of umpiring in England : nowadays they don’t even call a no ball , clear stumping or run out without referral and are in effect glorified sweater carriers
