The pieces that allows a monopod, or smaller tripod, to be mounted on a to sturdy tripod is a Shape baseplate (don’t know the exact model) and two Manfrotto super clamps... plus a few extra nuts and bolts to secure everything together. It’s surprising strong, but I wouldn’t trust it with anything bigger than a Canon 5 series, or a camera of equivalent weight 👍

Neil, excellent video. I have used my buddy's Ronin with his BMPCC. But I recently purchased a Ronin S of my own, currently using with my 80D, soon my EOS R will arrive and will be using with my Ronin. Since I am still new to the Ronin, I have 2 questions 1) should I leave the on-camera mic (RODE NTG) off when using the Ronin or leave on... have done both ways but still have not decided which is best, what do you recommend? 2) BTW - Loving your "Franken-Jib" - where would be the best place to get the clamps you used to hold the Tri or Mono Pod?
@neilfisher4 жыл бұрын
@TechSavvyDadd leaving an on-camera shotgun microphone will only create unnecessary challenges when trying to balance the gimbal - it will move the camera system's center of gravity much higher than expected. The "Franken-Jib" uses two Manfrotto super clamps and a Shape Base plate - though ultimately the specific pieces don't matter. Any means that you can mount a mono-pod or tripod to a fluid will get the job done 👍👍👍

Most thorough review I have seen of the Ronin S so far. Thanks for demonstrating multiple lenses on it. I have the Panasonic Lumix G9 and I use a couple of different lenses. Seeing that you mounted and balanced some pretty long and heavy lenses on it, I believe the Leica 100-400 telephoto zoom lens should work. I would just need to balance it while the zoom is half way between. I would like to experiment with some alfred Hitchcock effect filming as well as be able to zoom in and out while filming nature from a distance while maintaining smooth footage. It's too difficult to achieve that manually zooming by hand. Panasonic only makes one power zoom lens that only reach 140mm, I need more than that, which is why I'm considering purchasing the Ronin S as long as it's features would be fully or mostly compatible with the Panasonic Lumix G9.
@quasiguy5 жыл бұрын
Terrific job. You've got a great camera presence and offer a lot of helpful content. I've got the Ronin S and completely agree about the locking option. There is another gimbal manufacturer that offers that feature (I think it may be the Zhiyun Crane?) and it would be a giant help to be able to lock everything down for transport. One of my challenges is using a zoom lens like the 16-35 and then wondering if I need to rebalance it if I change focal length. (The Ronin S's motors seem to handle the change, however with a 70-200, you'd really have to rebalance if you went from one end of the range to the other. The biggest problem for me though is figuring out how to balance the gimbal with an external mic like the Rode VideoMic Pro on top. You have to face the lens upward as part of the balancing and this is impossible to do with a mic on top. Any suggestions? Or do you not worry about getting good sync sound. As a one-man run and gunner, I'd really like to find a solution to this vexing problem.

Well done sir, Thank you and really appreciate all the info that you gave us on this video. What would you say the timeframe would be of the learning curve? The sample shots shown on this video looked really amazing. Just curious on how long you've been using gimbals as well.
@neilfisher5 жыл бұрын
Many thanks @henrysitube 👍 Greatly appreciate the feedback. The time required to master the DJI Ronin-S is dependent on how much previous experience the operator has with other gimbals. The one-handed form factor is slightly different if you're used to a two hand system like the Ronin-M or Ronin-2. If you're a green gimbal operator and the Ronin-S is your first opportunity to learn - it does take quite a bit of time to learn how to walk smoothly and what shots are optimal for a gimbal. Personally, I've been using gimbals since Movi crashed the scene a number of years ago now. Hope this helps. 😃😃😃

Awesome video...lovely to be surrounded by nature..I have a Zhiyun Crane V2 that I use with a Canon 70D and a Canon 10-18mm STM lens...nice and simple...as long as there is enough light! The Crane is simple to use and I have a dual handle...I use the 70D as a B camera for a C100 mk2. Footage matches close enough in Cinestyle...but I would like to mount a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 on the Canon 70D (yes, I wish I had a GH5 for IBIS but can't afford it!) and I think this Ronin S will work fine-I saw you trying on some crazy lenses! the Zhiyun has a limited payload. My question is, did you compare this gimbal to the Moza Air 2? they look like twins! both heavier than my Crane V2...will I get more steady footage using the Ronin S (or the Moza air 2)...I may need a dual handle? or a simple second handle for better control of the Gimbal...I can see that I need to press and hold the trigger to lock all axis...any way to lock all axis without pressing and holding the trigger? let's say I want to mount it on top of a monopod to fake a low flying drone as i walk forward? I wont' be able to reach the trigger...also, did you find the need for the LCD accessory for the Ronin S to allow you for changes on the fly without the phone app? the Moza Air 2 has a built in LCD but I'm not convinced the gimbal itself is better than this Ronin S. Both are heavy. i will lift weights! the price to get better footage. If you take a break from the lovely BC wilderness perhaps you can share you opinion! thanks so much!

@Erick Perdomo when making this video the Moza Air 2 had not been released and I have yet to have any opportunity to use the Air 2 personally. Programming one of the three user profiles to lock all axes is easily done and a recent firmware update has added the same function through a combination of button presses. Yes, having an LCD would be nice - this is touched on towards the end of this video. Finally, balancing a gimbal atop a pole is never going to produce footage a stable as an actual drone.

@@neilfisher right...I should have read the entire thread first! sorry! YES..there is way to make it work...the firmware update you speak of is great too...I have watched several videos comparing the Ronin S with the Moza Air 2...I may try to rent them first...thanks!

Great video with good content and information, thank you ! Could you include a details of the Canon lenses that have worked well for you. Based on your video I'm awaiting my Ronin S, which I will use with my Canon 5D Miii.
@neilfisher4 жыл бұрын
@Craig Harper the Ronin-S won't play well with the older 5D mark III - and as for lenses, it seems anything released after 2016 works very well. Older lenses are really where trouble starts - and this shouldn't be overly surprising.

Excellent video Neil, best I have seen, have you tried the Mozo air 2 , I need to get one or the other but cannot decide which just on the specs
@neilfisher5 жыл бұрын
@Tim Aldridge I haven't had the opportunity to use the Mozart Air 2, but on paper it certainly does look like a strong contender. Having said that, I heard some mixed first hand accounts of its usability: awkward companion app and less than intuitive controls. Could be worth renting prior to pulling the trigger.

Man, I've seen many reviews of the Ronin... wish I had seen this one earlier!! Amazing explanation, footage, modes and phone integration, and beautiful dog! Thank you so much for the video! QUESTION: I have the 5d Mk IV as well... Should I just get the Ronin-S essentials kit since I don't see much benefit on using the focus wheel? I guess I could buy the command screen since I am saving about $240... The question is: do I need all the cables that the Ronin-S (regular, non-essentials kit) and the metal tripod?? Or, can I just get by with the plastic tripod and the one cable that the essentials kit comes with (considering I have the 5d Mk IV)? Any insight would be helpful! Thanks again
@neilfisher5 жыл бұрын
Firstly thanks for the kind words @Jordi Sanchis-Sanchez 😃The cables and small metal tripod included in the regular kit are nice to have, but to this day the focus wheel remains un-used. I've gone with the Tilta Nucleus Nano, which works wonderfully with the Ronin-S. Hope this helps 👍👍👍

Hi Neil. Fantastic review. Quick question: "How did you manage to program mode 3 to lock mode?" I assume you used this mode for the jib shot as you could not hold the trigger in. Thanks again

Many thanks @Jac van der Spuy 😃 Simply select the profile you would like to modify and then in the configuration section disable the SmoothTrack for all three axis: Pan, Tilt and Roll. Have you had any luck using the 5D Mark IV with the Ronin S for motion time-lapse? In the scenes I've shot, the exposures vary every 3 frames, as if I'm bracketing exposures (but I'm not); and this causes the still image sequence to flicker like crazy after processing. Any thoughts are appreciated!
@neilfisher4 жыл бұрын
@John Tomsick I've not encountered any issues while using the Ronin-S and Canon 5D mark IV to capture motion-timelapse. Consider taking the camera out of high-speed drive and instead use single shot 👍

wow just stumbled across your video here, quality work! I also noticed right away you have a different style (kinda getting burned out on everyone trying to mimic Peter Mckinnon, me being one of them ;)) I like how you show your settings at the bottom of the screen. I'm also curios that you shoot everything in 30fps verse what most "popular" KZbinrs seem to all use 24fps. 30 fps definitely has a different look which is refreshing. Just curios what your thoughts are on 30fps vs 24fps cuz guys like Matti Haapoja say to NEVER shoot 30fps lol. I kinda like the hyper real look of 30fps for youtube type stuff though. I don't know now I'm rambling.
@neilfisher5 жыл бұрын
I honestly had to Google who Peter Mckinnon and Matti Haapoja are. The choice between 30fps and 24fps comes down to preference. I've worked in broadcast television for many years and at this point I prefer 30fps - it feels more lifelike and less as if you're "watching" something being played back. I assume others often chose 24fps because they've been told it's more "cinematic" and it's what movies are shot in - which is not always the case either.

Best Ronin-S review I have found and a great video, thank you. I'm new to gimbals and wonder how you cope with controlling focus and exposure when you're moving with the camera mounted on the gimbal. I'm assuming auto focus and maybe aperture priority? I've done some tests and am struggling with this, especially filming outdoors with changing light conditions.
@neilfisher5 жыл бұрын
@Granadilla Films I personally rely on a Tilta Nucleus Nano to pull focus. As for exposure, following the 180 degree shutter rule: your shutter speed/shutter angle shouldn't be changing during a shot... unless you're somehow changing frame speed. You could adjust the iris/aperture, but this would require another wireless device and a cinema lens with a de-clicked iris. Alternatively, leaving the shutter and iris unchanged - you could adjust the gain/iso... just as long as it's a smooth adjustment. Hope this rambling helps. 👍👍👍

Thanks @Jay Freeman 😃 I've had the opportunity to use the command unit and I still feel that it shouldn't be necessary. Having used the Zhiyun Crane 2 with its integrated LCD display - it just seems like something every 3-axis gimbal should have. I am aware that it's possible to charge cameras via the Ronin-S, provided the camera supports USB charging - which mine do not. I don't like making videos that simply list specifications of a product, because I was unable to try USB camera charging - I didn't want to provide thought on something I couldn't vouch for... if that makes sense. Thanks again. 👍

Hey @Czichrshelp So sorry for not replying to your first comment - I read it then went to check the settings and obviously got interrupted and forgot. The profile I primarily use has the following settings: (Pan, Speed: Low, Deadband: Medium, Sensitivity: Low), (Tilt, Speed: Medium, Deadband: Low, Sensitivity:Low) and I've turned of the Roll SmoothTrack. Hope this helps. 😃😃😃

Hi Neil. Congratulations for the great review you’ve made onto this great tool that’s the Ronin S. Fantastic explanations and great images! I’ve a question please for you. In the video, you say that you’ve changed your setting of the 3rd fonction BUTTON and replaced them by your OWN setting to get the same function as the trigger button we have to keep pressed in front of the gimbal. Do you mind to tell me how to set it through the DJI App or where to find a video that can help me to do so please? Thanks so much for your answer. Seb.

@neilfisher5 жыл бұрын
Thanks @chun sun 👍 The Shape base plate has two 3/8" on both the top and bottom, allowing for a tripod plate beneath and two Manfrotto super clamps up top. A beefy cheese plate would also suffice in place of the Shape base plate. Hope this makes sense 😃
