The Ronin S has been out for a while now, is it actually worth the money? I decided to get and and give it and try it out. Today I’m going to give you my verdict regarding the DJI Ronin S. I think it is one of the best single handle gimbal available at any price.
I’ll give you my opinion about all the specs and features and we will look at some handheld footage vs DJI Ronin S footage, both with and without warp stabilization.
To find out more, you’ll need to watch the video!

Great info and review. I’m not an owner of the ronins but I can say I’m weighing my options. The ronin M is bigger but I can say it is good for attaching monitors, mics, etc. I figure it would be harder to configure on the ronin S
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You are correct about the Ronin M. It is easier to configure it with additional gear and the dual handle is something that I like better. But, it is a pain in the butt that you can't put it down. Trust me, I had it for about a year before getting my vest (which I love). I would recommend getting a ring setup for it so that you can just put it down without the stand. I would take it on a shoot in the woods for example, and you're down shooting and can't do anything with it, no rest. lol.

Got mine as soon as it came out and it's honestly one of the best investments into my gear I've ever done. Sure, it is kinda heavy, but I've got used to it fairly quickly and now even 5 hour shoots aren't a problem. One thing tho. Don't do autotune in the forest or on any uneven, soft ground. My rates got messed up this way and the whole thing started shaking. The worst part is that you can't correct it using autotune because it shakes so much. Solved it manually though and got over a week worth of stabilisation from just two batteries (not even fully depleted).

Excellent footage with the Ronin. I just got rid of my Crane 2 for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was its physical limitations which the Ronin has apparently overcome. From your footage, the Ronin also appears to provide far greater stabilization than does the Crane 2, although that remains to be seen in my own real-life usage. One question: When you were walking with the Ronin, were you walking at a normal gate without trying to compensate for the stability of the gimbal? This is important for me in my use of a gimbal. Thanks in advance of your reply and thanks for a very valuable video.

Hey I just wanted to ask you something about fps. I edit my videos for social media: yt, ig and fb. As I live in pal region it might be logical to stick with 25 and 50 fps. However is 50 fps vs 60 fps a huge disadvantage for gimbal footage in slow mo for b roll? As I would assume 60 fps is better. Or is it really negligible? My goal is buttery smooth footage ofc. 😊
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын

But you're not really dropping frames are you? You're just stretching them out. Meaning, you'll still play 60 frame, but in a little over 2 seconds.
@NigelAquascaping
@NigelAquascaping 5 жыл бұрын
@@TechGearTalk If you say so I'm not super techy about this haha. I need to get the job done and over time I will learn more for sure. So basically you recommend to record 24 fps for static footage. 60 fps for slow mo even when living in Pal region. Maybe the pal region doesn't matter as it is mainly for KZbin. I just need to check that If won't have any flickering with my aquarium light at 60 fps. It was just something I read somewhere to stay 25p with 50 fps and 24 fps with 60 fps.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
I would test for flickering at 24, shoot at 25 and then just do 50 -> 25 for slow motion. You can always test 60->25 and see if you're getting flickering there.

Great review. Love mine. I hear the complaints about the weight and it is true, it’s heavy ... but I am ok with it because of its ability to handle heavy setups. I often use it to stabilize my GH5s with metabones and a Sigma 135mm f/1.8 (big lens!) ... the Ronin S doesn’t struggle at all and footage is perfectly jitter free even with this telephoto lens.

Hey maybe you can help me decide. I'm currently using a Canon 700d on tripod for videos. And my Huawei mate 20 pro with zhiyun smooth 4 for some cinematic movement shots. However I really prefer my dslr shots above my phone shots. So I'm currently looking into a Canon 80d for 1080p 60 fps so I can slow down in post. Do you think the 80d is nice I'm on a budget. Beside that I'm really doubting between the zhiyun crane 2 and the ronin dj s. I'm a bit scared of everyone saying that it is to heavy. I love making videos but as a hobbyist I don't record that much during the year. So it might be hard to get used to it? Just basically a few times a year when creating setups at my home and a few events.. Maybe some traveling but I think it may be wise to keep my phone with stabilizer for traveling. It might to bulky and a bit scary to cary a Canon 80d with dj ronin s everywhere around in plane and going everywhere on holiday? Also I'm filming a lot of aquarium stuff and don't need to run around and things. What might be handy is the focus pull wheel for some focus pull shots. Also for my hobby im using the Canon 10-18mm lens and the 60mm macro. I guess only the 10-18 is useable on stabilizer? Got any thoughts? would love to hear them!
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
Great questions. First, I would just get the SL2/200d and shoot on a stabilizer. You don't need all that weight of the 80D (unless you're replacing your 700d and want things like a headphone jack). You will save a lot of money. Look at the new Ronin SC (it's lighter). I don't ever use the focus on my stabilizer, it's much too hard for me to do. I always use AF. Hope that helps.

@@TechGearTalk I just compared the 200d vs the 80d and on paper seems like 80d has no real advantage. Yes weather proof but this is not so useful for me. Would they both produce almost same photo and video quality when using the same lens? Beside video making I also make photos for contests while I'm able to do it well with 700d I don't want to downgrade. But I guess the body doesn't matter to much for this case more the lens + light setup. Only for the Canon 200d it seems to have low auto focus point compared to others. Is this an issue?

Hi Ken. I think you’re talking about the riser which lens you raise the position of the camera in relations to the gimbal. This helps with some camera/lens combos where the quick release plate would hit the lens (if you don’t use the riser). Hope that helps. Thanks for the kind words.

Hey man, great video, I have a Ronin S with a Sony a73 and a 24/105 lens. The thing is when I put it in Mode 2 for example (or even Mode 1), when you pan without touching the joystick just by moving left and right, when you go back with a movement to make the camera to point back to the "center" lets say, when it reaches the center ,the gimbal does a little jitter vertically on the tilt. It's like is trying to center vertically with a tiny move up of the gimbal. ... do you know how to prevent that? or fix that? ... thank you!

Thank you so much. I have not experienced that. I don't have that lens but I'll put the sigma 18-35 + mc-11 adapter which will add some weight and let you know what I run into. Do you run into this issue with every lens?
