A brief clip of the post-match interview after Leeds United beat Derby County 2-0 in October 1969, the first league meeting between Don Revie and Brian Clough's teams. The animosity is already clear to see as Clough bemoans being "put through the Leeds machine."
David Coleman is asking the questions.

Not once but twice Clough took average second tier English clubs to 1st division champions. Derby got to the semi-final of the European cup. Oh and Nottingham Forest won the European cup two years in succession. Clough's record speaks for itself. 1967 joins Derby in 2nd division. 1969 Derby promoted to 1st division. 1972 Derby 1st division champions. 1973 Derby semi-final of European cup. 1975 joins Nottingham Forest in 2nd division. 1977 Forest promoted. 1978 Forest 1st division champions. 1979 Forest European cup winners. 1980 Forest European cup winners. Unparalleled.

I think because of the stages they were at in their managerial careers, they both misunderstood each other. Revie saw a young immature manager in Clough who did more talking than walking. Clough through his age, saw a man who had befriended the likes of Shankly and Busby and was part of the establishment, someone he had to go and topple. If we had caught Clough when he had more experience and maturity on his side, we’d have been unstoppable

Everyone young and old has heard of Brian Clough, not so with Din Revie. What did Don Revie win that Brian Clough didn’t? What did Brian Clough win that Don Revie didn’t? Brian Clough proved to be a more successful manager than Don Revie over time. Not saying both weren’t great managers but Cloughie left the game with a better record which suggests that the Leeds board were very hasty in buckling to pressure to sack him after 7 weeks… bad decision… what have Leeds achieved since Don Revie left? Not a lot in 50 years.

When Revie became England manager he left a club that had achieved nothing when he took over and which he had kept at the top for a decade. (By the way, Matt Busby and Bob Paisley only ever managed one club each as well.) Clough meanwhile was soon to be (justifiably) sacked for the second time in a year. He was never in the running for the England job at that time.

At the time, Revie had an advantage over Clough because Leeds were already an established top flight side and Derby were up and coming, so the stats don't really give a true picture. mick lufc Top flight teams will always have the added advantage, especially the mighty Leeds side who were already a force at the time and had accumulated a lot of playing experience from their international players such as Norman Hunter, Jackie Charlton, Billy Bremner, Johnny Giles, Gordon McQueen etc.. You can have all the ability in the world, but if you don't have any experience, then you can't access your full potential. It must be said, that Leeds side is one of the greatest English football teams of all team. During the 64-65 season in the old first division you speak of, Leeds intimated a lot of sides with their all out aggressive style of football. Their game against Everton ended up in a mass brawl and the referee ordered the players off the field after 35 minutes to prevent further violence.
