Such an under-appreciated album. Relistening now in my 30s, and damn, I didn't even realize what great stuff I was dancing to as a teenager. She was so ahead of her time in so many ways. Talking about media BS, authenticity, cultural appropriation, sexism, self-confidence, representation and all those important things way back in 2003. A true icon that will stand the test of time.

How was this song about any of this? It’s about the reality of a relationship not working out and accepting your partner despite their imperfections.
@s.o.37533 күн бұрын
@@SDS-ee9js I didn't say this specific song touches on all of these themes, but it certainly touches on some. Literally the first line - "All I know is everything is not as it's sold". Lies being sold sounds like general social commentary to me, not just like a line about a romantic relationship. After all, why should we assume all songs are about romance only?

This whole album is an absolute masterpiece
@feniksphoenix80264 жыл бұрын
This song clearly includes two different layers. At the beginning, the first 2 stanzas, Nelly is talking about how she has become wiser than when she was a kid and dreamed about how great life is in general. She now realizes that people can be fake and mean and "really not real at all". This knowledge confuses her ("the more I grow, the less I know"), she slowly loses the ability to deal with life ("the more I see, the less I grow"). As a conclusion she burries all the images she created as a kid ("say goodbye to the way of life...") for they are now useless to her. The chorus tells us another layer: The song has slowly turned into a description of a relationship. The first time she sings about him "wanting more" from her, we get the feeling she is sad about the situation, as she is unable to fulfill his wishes, she feels she is not enough for him. During the rest of the song, the mood clearly changes: The last part shows how she realizes she can try and try and she will never achieve whatever he wants from her, but this knowledge does not destroy her. In fact, it helps her recognize who she is and that they both are imperfect. During the climax of the music she finds relief, as she now knows they both will never be perfect, and that makes them beautiful together. In their relationship they can both be who they truly are: "All of the things we want each other to be, we never will be And that's wonderful, and that's life And that's you, baby,This is me, baby And we are, we are, we are, we are Free In our love" Amazing how wise Nelly sounds at such a young age. This song is ingenious.
@Living_Connectedness4 жыл бұрын
Great analysis. I love that you read into as much as I do, it's such an amazing meaningful song. My interpretation of the chorus, is rather than it being a relationship, it's her audience or producers or parents. And the bit about you and me is talking about her and us as humanity. But that's what is so beautiful about music, is you can take it for what it means to you as an individual. This song came out when I was 18, I'm now 34, and the sentiment of the lyrics have changed and meant so many different things to me over that time. I could really relate to feeling older than my years. And now I feel like I know less than I did back then. Funny old world.

Thank you so much for analyse/description. I wondered about the meaning of this song since I listen the first time. And now 16 years later... finally! 😆🤣 I meant, I could understand of the song in some parts. But the chorus messed me up. I try to understand what she's mean by that. But now it's clear.

I am happy to found this beautiful song back after Nellys comeback. I'm so glad she's back, because hardly any other musician reminds us of the 2000s as much as she does. And she's still got it!

Esos eran buenos tiempos.

I agree with Adi, this song is so special. It's not a happy song, but a true-about-life song. Sadness is part of our lives too... It's also brings sadness to get remembered by older days when we were younger and maybe happier.

Hey, I don't know you or where you live but I live in Texas and I have been depressed for years. My sister in law just did ketamine therapy for her depression and she is giving me the same gift. I will start the therapy in the next week. She said she was suicidal and now she is free. I have known her for 30 years and I never knew she was suffering like I was. I'm encouraged by her breakthrough and excited about mine. Check it out for yourself. Love ❤️

Folklore is my favourite Nelly Furtado album and Nelly is one of my favourite female singers and songwriters of all time. Passionate inside as she is hot on the outside. She came the closest I'll ever get to modern day commercial music, because she's super creative and knows how to pull it off with artistic credibility. We are more or less the same age and have the same childhood influences like Billy Joel's Glass Houses album and a drama teacher we miss very much. This video's spanish theme is something I instantly fell in love with. Since early childhood, I have this fascination with bulls, matadors, white arches and flamenco. Sometimes I guess a totally different single than 'the world'. I love stuff like Believers from Spirit Indestructible and Phoenix from your new album. Stay yourself and direct to your listeners. Loving you and your art. Ladies & gentlemen..Nelly Furtado.

Except for the last part of the song, where it's quite obvious it's about love, I think the lyrics can also be interpreted as a self acceptance conversation with one's self, realizing all that he/she has been through and looking into the mirror and still not feeling good enough so that he/she has to try again and again. Probably I'm wrong but when I think about it, I can't help but love this song more.

Nelly I hope you see this! I saw an interview of her saying that after hours of performing she would sit alone in her hotel room and look at the floor, feeling like a fraud thinking that people liked her more for her image, rather than her music. I grew up in a very religious home and was only allowed to watch the music videos where people were dressed modestly and not talking about sex and drugs. I remember watching “I’m like a bird” and beaming with happiness that someone famous looked like me, all because you had a long modest skirt. You made me feel less out of the club by showing ur voice, not your body. So I hope you read this one day and see that it’s exactly the opposite. Your music has soul that creates its own image. It was never about your looks or how your label tried to sell you, it was always about you nelly, not your labels perception of you. Ps. This song had 10 year old me letting her emotion out (grew up in a war and lost many close people). I couldn’t connect to kids songs or “adult” songs, but you felt like peace.
