**Pinned Comment** Everyone keeps asking about how it compares to the SB1000 Pro, It's fairly staright forward: I love the SB1000 Pro and it is in fact my favorite SVS subwoofer, it has a ton more features by way of the cell phone app and is much smaller so it's great for anyone with a major space constraint. While both are great subs the RSL being larger will have more output overall. SQ between the two is similar enough. I suggest you choose based on physical dimensions or features if you need them.

@NemoPropaganda2 жыл бұрын
@@EDCAssociate hey bro, that's a tough one, I've never had both subs here at the same time. My memory is a little hazy but I want to say the RSL still has a thicker bottom end because it's ported while the SB2000 Pro had a little more in room extension and a slightly cleaner sound. I really couldn't say with any confidence which one was outright better but if my memory is service me well the SB2000 pro should take the edge. Really take this with a grain of salt though.

Great review as always. I have a MkI and a MKII, also have dual SB2k’s and two lower end Elac 10s for the bedroom, have had some Polk junk.. have listened to many over the years and I will concur there is absolutely nothing that comes close to checking all the boxes: construction, power, depth, control, size and not least, customer service as a RSL. When they did the preorder the website crashed and when I called late in the day they were all sold out. Whomever answered the phone said they anticipated that and put a few away for customers that couldn’t order online. Absolutely stellar.

I used to go to their showroom in Canoga Park back in the 80's. They had a couple of sets of JBL's on their wall of sound and in many regards the JBL's sounded better but the RSL's sounded pretty damn good too- especially since they cost much less because you bought them directly from RSL. Well I finally took the plunge and just setup my new RSL10sMKII. I had to put in in a corner, but with a really low gain setting, (a pinch off of, off), WOW what a difference. I'm no electrical engineer, but there has to be something about 400W making such an improvement at such a low gain. Don't just buy for the quality...RSL's customer service is top notch. Joe Rodgers answered my email's promptly, and helped with some mounting solutions for my bookshelves (CG-23's). I prefer the output of a 12" woofer, and if RSL ever gets a 12" to market I would definitely be hopping on the train for one. I'm really looking forward to hearing some really clean punchy bass again. My old 12" has seen much better days, and I've no real use for low frequency extension as it'll be in a 2CH setup. So here is my question, I do have an RSL Speedwoofer 10s. I also have 2 Velodynes spl 1000 in immaculate condition a little while ago I did a little test at more than reference levels on both Velodynes and they still impressed me, then I turned them off and decided to test the RSL Speedwoofer…. And to be honest I think the RSL Speedwoofer almost kept up with 2 Velodynes spl 1000, like I said these are in immaculate condition. Do you think 2 RSL Speedwoofers would tell me about to forget about the ol skool spl 1000’s? By the way I’m talking about 15 years old subs, but if you know about subwoofers, these little things were the shiet back then. Will definitely appreciate your honest response.
@NemoPropaganda2 жыл бұрын
Hey Luis, so the SPL range from Velodyne was good for the time, tons of output in a small package but they were very monotone. Changing the freq knob almost has no impact on the overall sound. The subs tend to make the same sounding bass just at different volumes. Personally I'd buy another speedwoofer and sell the old Velodynes.

Hi Jerry, I think you should watch my Tzero review again, it should be pretty clear why I did not make the comparison. The Tzero isn't really a subwoofer in the traditional sense. The cabinet has a slot opening, but it is more accurately called a mass loaded transmission line. Which is why it has better qualities than most ported subs.
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
I don't mean to be that guy but this is not a mass loaded transmission line. T-line enclosures are much larger, the air mass acts as the spring (like a sealed enclosure) and the low end roll off is 12dB (like a sealed enclosure). What we have here is a a slot shaped port tuned to whatever RSL decided (maybe 26hz or so) with your typical 24dB low end roll off and the port loading acting as the spring.
@NeilBlanchard Жыл бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda It is not a "classic" TL, to be sure, but the diagonal baffle inside, it is a variation on a "new style" TL. The driver is located about 1/3rd of the way away from the closed end (the triangular space near the driver) and then there is the second triangular space the begins the open end of the TL, and then the fairly long slot that is the terminus opening. These are definitely not "just" a ported design. The added mass of the moving air in the open end of the TL *lowers* the fundamental frequency of the system, and since the air in this part of the cabinet is moving in *unison* with the driver - it does not act as a spring. Only the air in the closed end does this. I have designed MLTL speakers, and the "new" style designs are able to be be smaller than the old school type. They have lower distortion, as well. What goes on with these designs is far more complex than meets the eye. The distance on the outside of the cabinet, from the center of the woofer, to the center of the terminus opening causes cancellations of a series of harmonic spikes, and when done correctly, the total output of the system is quite smooth, and the output of the terminus opening is in phase with the driver. All the volumes and dimensions of the spaces on the inside are important. In particular, the volume of the last section inside the slot allows the tuning frequency to be pushed lower than the Fs of the driver - which is not the case with typical ported designs - and certainly not with sealed designs.

@@NeilBlanchard interesting, I will admit my experience with T-Line is very limited and I have not read up on the topic in a long time. I do know cabinet design can be fairly complex and can have a huge impact on the sound. Thank you for sharing that.
@NeilBlanchard Жыл бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda I use a program called Hornresp, which has been refined and improved for decades. You put in the full Thiele/Small parameters for your driver, and input the areas at the key sections, and the distance at the centerline between them. Hornresp is doing calculations at all frequencies between 0-1000Hz - many thousands of not millions of calculations to produce the predicted response. It includes the path distance on the outside of the cabinet between the center of the woofer and the center of the terminus opening, and it has an accurate model of polyfil, as well. It can tell you the velocity of air at the terminus opening, and cone excursion. The key innovation in the new design is, as I mentioned - moving the woofer from the closed end, to about 1/3rd the way away from the closed end. This can essentially eliminate the strong dips that were almost always present in the old designs. And tapering the section down smaller than the driver Sd has the effect of making the TL act a lot longer. This is the mass loading - the cone is acting a lot like an open baffle at higher frequencies, but it progressively adds mass as the frequency drops. The results are much better than it would seem possible. Since the terminus opening is outputting a range of frequencies, and the slope can be controlled, when you get the room lift, you can avoid "room boom" and get lower extension, as well.

Just wanted to say, Emotiva has new subwoofers from 8" to 15" coming out. They're calling it the XS series, so hopefully it's a more affordable variation of the RS line. Please get one for review, however you can! I'm in the market for a sub but may wait to see how they perform. Although I don't think they've said anything about a release date. They just unveiled them at the Schiit/Emotiva Texas Round Up event they had(well, it's actually going on today, 7/23, also).

Great review I had missed watching! Got me intrigued and I have a question for you: I replaced a B&W ASW608 sub with a REL T5x. difference is huge and I love the integration of the REL to my system, the speed and texture the bass has! All awesome, but I have a serious issue with the REL. The transformer is noisy and I am able to hear it even 9ft away!! Drives me nuts! hearing that very faint "humm" in my bedroom convinced me I need to get rid of it! By the way, REL changed the transformer for a new one but I still can hear the "humm". Do you think this RSL would be a good option? or does the Rythmik L12 would be a noticeable improvement? or any other suggestion under $800? It would be used exclusively for music in a bedroom setting. Definitely more interested in quality of the bass than quantity. The speakers are a pair of KEF LS50 meta and the amp is a cambridge CXA81. As always, THANKS!
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
No this RSL would not be a good option, while its very good and capable of a lot more bass output and extension than the t5x the sound quality difference is too far away from the T5X. Hmm, that's unfortunate that you're experiencing transformer hum, if the plate amp has been replaced and its still doing it theres a good chance its something in the home electricity or your sound system. Your high level cable isn't all coiled up is it? Have you tried swapping to low level to see if that makes any difference or disconnecting signal all together? If you disconnect all signal and it still does it then try a different power outlet, try a different room, try using a power strip, etc... this will help isolate what the problem actually is. Anyhow I digress. The L12 will be on par in terms of sound quality and is a very reasonable alternative that will offer up tremendously more extension.

@@NemoPropaganda Hey thanks so much for your prompt response! a-p-p-r-e-c-i-a-t-e it!! tried absolutely everything as I love the T5x! different outlets, different rooms, power strip, have been in touch with REL customer support (great customer support by the way) and they changed the transformer but informed me the REL T models do have a tiny bit of noise coming from the transformers. For me, it's unacceptable... it's just too loud. should be dead silent. will check the L12 as I've really given up on the Rel.

@@themastroiannis that's a bummer but I understand, mine hums ever so slightly but I can only hear it when I'm up against the subwoofer making adjustments to it and my ear is like 1ft away but I also have a fairly well damped room. Micro 3000 is about having big bass in a small package, if you have a space limitation or just want a really small sub then go for Micro 3000, otherwise a bigger sub like the RSL or even SVS's own SB1000 will have more output.

Thanks Nemo for another great review. How does it compare to the REL HT 1003? Both 10" and seems great for HT. The REL is only $100 more MSRP on sale right now @ $549. If it was your money, which would you buy if you can only choose 1?
@NemoPropaganda2 жыл бұрын
I have not heard the 1003, only the 1205. Vs the 1205 the ported RSL has a more pronounced bottom end and should have more output overall, that's no surprise as a ported 10" generally can outperform a sealed 12" all things being equal. The RSL is the easy choice if output & extension are primary concerns (theater) on the music side of things the the lighter weight moving mass and fast filter set of the 1205 will make it an easy recommendation as it can blend in with damn near anything and integrate amazingly well.

Just the parts for a sub like this: Comparable plate amp: 200.00 Driver: 160.00 Enclosure materials: 80.00 That already puts you at the cost that they are charging, then you have to factor that they are shipping it to you, providing customer service, providing their expertise and designing the product, paying someone to manufacture it. music only? Keep in mind all subwoofers have a sweet spot, if you have them turned down too low because the room is too small for them it's like driving a sports car at 5mph. Theater doesn't have this problem because their dynamic swings are much more extreme. With that said I would not run dual SB3000 in that room, those subs sounds best at louder volumes. Vented subs on the other hand tend to have a wider sweet spot and are happier at a wider range of volumes so the RSL 10s would get my vote however if you have dual SB3000 money why not get a pair of Rythmik FM8 or REL T7X or on the cheaper side REL 1003 MK2? Another great review. Thank you! I have a question for you on the MKII (I apologize if you already addressed this-I didn't see it). The MKII seems to have a new LFE DSP mode. When you set the crossover to LFE (knob switched ccw), the DSP increases low range gain and extends bass. With LFE switched off, the MKII is supposed to behave more like its predecessor in so-called "music mode." And if you low pass from your preamp, you just max the cutoff frequency on the sub. for "music mode," i.e. LFE switch off on sub. My question is did you compare these two modes at all? And would the "LFE mode" only be appropriate for HT? I'm mostly interested in stereo music listening and 2.1ch TV watching. I have an Emotiva USP-1 preamp and was thinking of using its bass management to blend Arendall 1961 bookshelf speakers with the Speedwoofer, since MKII is just within my budget (if I can get my hands on one!). Then I start thinking to myself, maybe I should wait and save up for a Rythmik L12. Cheers!
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
my preamp doesn't have any bass management so if I set any sub to LFE it just plays full range so I I was not able to test that. I do also use my system like you for music and 2.1 TV. With the arendal 1961 you will need to blend high and the L12 has a much better midbass region than the 10s so I do suggest saving a few more shillings and going for the L12 instead.

I kind of feel a sub like the Emotiva SE8 would fit the bill more so than the RSL, but I have no reference since this is my first real sub... could also be way off and the RSL might be the perfect sub :)

I think you will be happy with the SE8, it has a little more fidelity in it than the RSL but the RSL can extend much lower and play louder. SE8 stops right around 30hz, if you want more extension and even better SQ you'll have to step up to something like the Rythmik L12.

@@NemoPropaganda Really appreciate it. The RSL just seemed like overkill for what I think I'm looking for, even though I love a great value. Any other options you would recommend for SQ, over the SE8 (or is that basically the best in its class)? A used Rel HT1003 possibly?
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
@@colinchang1543 ASW8/10 have a little better bass fidelity but the they've been in production for something like 14 years so buying used runs the risk of buying 10+ year old electronics, personally that's too old for me. As long as you're okay with the limitations of a small sub like the SE8 (extension below 30hz non existant) I think it's pretty darn good for the money and I'm not sure theres better out there, especially since its 10% off right now so about $300 flat. I say go for it!

@@NemoPropagandaThank you so much for taking the time out to help. Good call on the used B&W's. Yeah, hard to pass up the discount on the SE8... think it'll be the one. Thanks again :)

I wonder what the actual port tuning of the Speedwoofer is. Sid you notice any chuffing when driven hard? I want to DIY a 10" and use the Speedwoofer as a reference point
@NemoPropaganda2 жыл бұрын
I didn't hear any chuffing, my guess is 25hz but I really am just guessing.

What are your thoughts about these RSL Mk II's compared to the SVS Micro or a REL t5x to pair with planar speakers?
@NemoPropaganda2 жыл бұрын
The RSL is much larger than those subwoofers, I wouldn't bring them up in the same conversation. If you need extremely fast bass you want to look at REL, Rythmik, or JL Audio.

I have a 12x15 room. Debating hard between dual RSL 10s mkii or dual SVS SB 1000 pro. My listening is music/ht/gaming. Room is not open so would the ported rsl or sealed svs fit the bill better? I love having clean bass for music as I listen to many genres but also love a sub to creep up suddenly and punch me hard. Seems like both would work but what do you think would edge out over the other?
@NemoPropaganda5 ай бұрын
I love the SB1000 Pro and it is in fact my favorite SVS subwoofer, it has a ton more features by way of the cell phone app and is much smaller so it's great for anyone with a major space constraint. While both are great subs the RSL being larger will have more output overall and a more confident bottom end. SQ between the two is similar enough but the SVS takes the edge ever so slightly but the RSL should be able to fill a larger room and have a fuller sound. I suggest you choose based on physical dimensions, output capability, or features if you need them.
@thatprimalmanthejfmfiresmo92305 ай бұрын
@@NemoPropaganda I usually run subs at about 50% output if I have two of them. So in That instance would the bottom end be pretty similar for the two? Most of my listening is not reference volume.
@NemoPropaganda5 ай бұрын
@@thatprimalmanthejfmfiresmo9230 no, since its vented the rsl will have a fuller sound at the lower freq regardless of volume.

@@NemoPropaganda that is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you so much for your replies to a question that you answer constantly about these subs.

Close to pulling the trigger. If I can squeeze-in an RSL-SW10 I will, else I know I have room for 2 SE-8's...either way thanks to your reviews I'm sure I'll be happy either way...on to my "specific question" as asked...I seem to remember reading on RSL's site, recommendation for placement from the wall for port clearance, but can't find it now. Do you have any idea what it is, or am I dreaming?, because I can't find any mention on their site?
